Hit Me Baby 1 More Time – Recap – Episode 5

Archive

Last week, legendary Diva Thelma Houston came out on top. Tonight Juice Newton, Animotion, Shannon, PM Dawn and Missing Persons battle to be the audience favourite. Who will win? Find out tonight!

Welcome to the season finale of Hit Me Baby, and here’s the Brit with the yooge, shiny teeth, Vernon Kay. He let’s us know that Glass Tiger won the online vote over Thelma Houston. He runs through the rules, and it’s time to get it started with

Juice Newton
Signature Hit: Queen of Hearts
Others: Angel Of The Morning
Random Notes: Won a Grammy for Best Country Pop Female Vocalist in 1982. “Angel of the Morning” has been covered by a plethora of artists, and ruined by Shaggy. Juice still records and tours.

Queen of Hearts
First, Juice looks great. The song has a real country twang, possibly more than the original. Anyways, nothing wrong with the performance. Juice is covering “Pieces Of Me” by Ashlee Simpson later.

Next up,
Animotion
Signature Hit: Obsession
Others: None. One Hit Wonder, yo.
Random Notes: I remember “Obsession” more for being the Fashion Television theme song that anything else. Song was named the #3 “Quintessentially 80’s song” by a writer in 1996. And for Hit Me Baby synergy, they used to tour with Howard Jones. Presumably not during his “Live Acoustic America” tour.

Obsession
Crap that chick’s hair is giant. And their performance is every bit as cheesy as the video in the 80’s. Not necessarily a good thing. But not bad either. They’re singing Dirty Vegas’ “Days Go By” later. Wait, there are words to that song?

More music after the

We’re back, and it’s time to rediscover

Shannon
Signature Hit: Let The Music Play
Random Notes: Single sold over 1,000,000 copies. Hey, remember when they actually sold singles? Anyways, she was part of the electronic dance craze in the 80s, and is now doing Broadway and releasing trance albums.

Let The Music Play
Well, she definitely has a lot of energy with the bouncing and stuff. The singing, not so good. But I guess it’s not all about that. Anyways, Shannon is singing “Foolish” by Ashanti later.

Up next is the sibling duo…

PM Dawn
Signature Hit: Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
Others: Looking Through Patient Eyes, I’d Die Without You
Random Notes: A good use of “True” as a sample, unlike that song by Nelly. Yeah, I’m shocked too. Their brand of trip-hop was popular in the early 90s, and provided a contrast to the growing grunge movement. Their more recent music has taken a more spiritual turn, but shockingly, hasn’t done as well as their earlier music.

Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
Something’s obviously up with Prince Be, as he’s sitting on a chair. They’ve also got what appears to be a Wyclef wannabe with them. Other than that, a nice performance. PM Dawn is singing Puddle of Mudd’s “Blurry” later, which is an unusual choice, but somehow fitting for these guys.

Missing Persons are on after the

We’re back, and it’s time for

Missing Persons
Signature Hit: Words
Others: Destination Unknown
Random Notes: Guitarist Warren Cuccurillo was a member of Duran Duran for a time. Their music and gimmicky stage appearance made them perfect for MTV. You know, back when MTV actually played music.

…Did Vernon say “Dego Pop”?

Words
I don’t think time has been very kind for this band. Well, the lead singer anyways, since it’s not exactly a “Band Reunited”. Or the song, as it just doesn’t sound very good. Anyways, they’re playing “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” by Kylie Minogue later.

The cover songs are coming up after the

We’re back, and it’s time to see what the artists have been up to.

Juice Newton has a lot of pets, and rides horses.

Pieces Of Me
Well, no lip-syncing here. Also, the song seems to work better as a country song. Or maybe that’s because Juice doesn’t need to scream out the words. 7/10

Animotion live apart in Fresno and Portland, and that chick’s hair really is that big.

Days go By
Well, this was a bit of a train wreck, but they’re having a wonderfully cheesy time with it, lounging it up, so good on them. 4/10

Shannon and PM Dawn are coming up after the

Shannon lives in White Stone, NY, and she’s recording again.

Foolish
Well, I don’t think that the performance is bad, but there’s really nothing special about it. It’s just kinda there. 5.5/10

PM Dawn live in New Jersey, take care of their kids, and play arcade games.

Blurry
Well, now they’re both sitting. And well, it’s pretty bad until they get to the chorus. Wyclef-wannabe helps the group suck up to the crowd by handing out flowers. Wonder if that will help? 5/10

Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons is a single mother in Philly.

Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
I’m not sure what Dale was going for here, but if it was “horrible performance”, then she hit it right. 3/10

Well, seeing as Juice was the only one who gave a decent performance, I’d say she should win, but given the pop-country leaning and the leadoff position, she probably won’t win.

So who WILL win? Find out after the

In the closest vote in Hit Me Baby history (all 5 episodes!!), the winner is… PM Dawn!! Their charity is the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and here they are to sing us out.

And that’s it for Hit Me Baby this season. Will there be another? Only time will tell…
