Various Artists – Hustle & Flow Original Soundtrack Review

The Inside Pulse:
The Hustle & Flow OST is a solid snapshot of the Southern Rap scene, although, for a movie set in Memphis, it’s strange that most of the music comes out of Atlanta. Top-heavy with Crunk cuts, this album is made for listening to in your car, with the bass cranked up to high. Crunk kings such as Lil Scrappy, Trillville, and Al Kapone (who wrote the raps for DJay from the movie) make an appearance, along with Boyz n da Hood, E-40, Juvenile, Mike Jones, and others.

Positives:
The three tracks from the movie by DJay, aka Terence Howard, are the best tracks on the album. “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”, “Whoop That Trick”, and “Hustle and Flow (It Ain’t Over)” are good enough to make you wish that a full-length CD of songs by DJay was released.

Negatives:
For an album about a movie set in Memphis, it’s awfully Crunk-heavy. If you’re not a fan of Crunk, then this album probably isn’t your cup of tea.

Cross-breed:
Lil Jon meets 8Ball and MJG.

Reason to buy:
If you’re a fan of Crunk or Southern Rap, then you’ll enjoy this album.
