OVW TV Report for August 20, 2005

OVW’s weekly TV show has gotten a lot of attention lately because of the writing and booking of Paul Heyman, and this week’s show topped the first five of the Heyman booking regime. This show even topped last week’s bloody angle involving Johnny Jeter and Matt Cappotelli. You have to hear the whole story to understand it, but this may be competition with last week’s angle for best angle of the year. The show just seemed like everything was unwinding and the atmosphere was that Johnny Jeter really had caused a chain of events that lead to one of the best angles I have ever seen in my life.

The show opens with highlights from last week’s show, with the vicious beatdown an already injured Matt Cappotelli took from Johnny Jeter.

Then comes a 4 minute version of Drowning Pool’s “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” with great footage of Jeter’s recent actions, Capotelli, Bobby Lashley, Ken Doane, Nick Nemeth, The Tolands, Ken Anderson, Daniel Puder, MNM, and the Melina-Maria catfight from a few weeks ago. This was a very cool video.

Dean Hill and Al Snow welcome us to the show, and we’re told Ken Doane will defend the OVW TV Title against Nick Nemeth on this show, and we will hear from Matt Capotelli and get an update on his injuries on this show. This of course is the cue for the new OVW Champion, and Johnny Jeter comes out to the desk and starts a promo. Jeter now has real heat. Both Dean Hill and Al Snow show their dislike for Jeter, who talks about how Capotelli is a cripple and how Jeter is a champion, but everyone still talks about Capotelli. It’s part of Heyman’s solid booking that Jeter continues to justify his actions, and the crowd is always aware of his motivations in being a heel. Then Jeter says no more title shots for Brent Albright, which brings out Albright, who gets in Jeter’s face. Albright says the only reason Jeter is standing there instead of getting beaten up is that Albright wants a rematch, and he knows Jeter would hide behind an injury. Jeter confirms that Albright has no intention of hitting him, and then shoves Albright by the face. Albright and Jeter lock horns, with both men and Al Snow going to the ground. The locker room empties, and they are pulled apart. As Jeter and Albright are being pulled apart, Jeter starts yelling at Albright. This enrages Elijah Burke, who leaves the crew pulling out Albright and walks up to Jeter, and delivers a great babyface promo challenging Jeter for the title. Jeter says he’s sorry for everything and he’s caused enough trouble, and he’s just going to leave. Elijah puts the mic down, and Jeter cracks Elijah with the title belt, knocking him out. Here comes everyone again, having just pulled Albright into the back, and Jeter escapes.

After a commercial break, Dean Hill and Al Snow talk about Jeter, and we’re reminded in brief clips of last week’s Capotelli bloodletting and what just happened moments ago with Elijah Burke. Aaron “The Idol” Stevens comes out to Rob Zombie’s version of “Brick House” with Beth Phoenix and Shelly, and he is followed by his opponent, Mike Mondo, who is accompanied to the ring by Da Beast. Seems like a character building match to me, because it’s a heel vs. heel match, but Mondo got some mic time talking about how unfair it is that Stevens has two women. Shelly pretended to be turned on by Mondo, giving Stevens a chance to sucker punch Mondo. The match was nothing special, just OK at best, ending when Shelly gave Mondo a lame kiss and Stevens hit the reverse neckbreaker Idolizer once Mondo turned around from the kiss. This is the early stages of Steven’s push, so I guess it’s necessary to get his character over. But the finish worked because of the storyline of Stevens’s women and Mondo’s character too,

In the back, Nick Nemeth is interviewed by WWE Diva Maria, who shows more personality on this show than she ever does on Raw. Nemeth discusses his victory over OVW TV Champion Ken Doane in a tag team match last week, and how Doane’s recent problems with Bobby Lashley have to be a distraction for the champion. Nemeth says he’ll win the title from Doane tonight.

After a commercial break, Mr Ken Anderson intros Daniel Puder from the dressing room. Anderson is tremendous here. He’s just so good, and has so much personality. Puder comes out and has a UFC style fight with Robert Fury, who is a tough looking OVW jobber. This is actually a well done worked shoot. Puder, who is major over with the OVW crowd, gets the Key Lock. Fury taps. One of the better squash matches of the year on any show.

Anderson is back, from the back, and is great in his announcement of Puder as the winner. Anderson is great, and Puder is a great backup for him.

After another commercial, more plugs for the fact we’ll hear from Matt Capotelli on this show.

Then out comes OVW TV Champion Ken Doane with his valet Souzay, manager Kenny Bolin, new Director of Security Dean “The Cooler” Visk, and Bobby Lashley.

But before the match, we go backstage to Maria, who tries to get information on the condition of Elijah Burke. Referee Chris Kay flies out of the dressing room, and Maria grabs him by the arm and wants an update on Elijah Burke. Chris Kay says Elijah was kayoed by the belt shot, and Chris is bringing the car around to take Elijah to the hospital. Chris then goes off on a rant about Johnny Jeter. Eric Langy, the OVW head trainer, comes out, and confirms that Elijah Burke was KO’d and they used smelling salts to wake him up, and now they’re taking him to the hospital for observation. Langy then goes off on a rant about Jeter, saying something needs to be done about Jeter. Langy says, “I know I’m only the trainer” and “my opinion doesn’t mean much” but criticizes Jeter. I love the heat Heyman is building on Jeter. Heyman is having everyone in the company act disgusted by this heel’s actions, and it makes Jeter look like a huge star.

Nick Nemeth comes to the ring, and it’s time for our OVW TV Title Match. It took a little time to build, but then they really got going, kicking out of each other’s finishers, and putting on a really good match. Doane couldn’t pin Nemeth no matter how hard he tried, and finally turned to Bobby Lashley and cried for help. Lashley refused. Nemeth started an offensive, and went to the top rope, where Dean Visk shoved him off. Chris Cage came out and started throwing punches at Visk, but Lashley hit Cage with a vicious clothesline on the floor. Nemeth dove over the top rope to save his tag team partner, but Lashley caught him in mid air and drove his back into the cornerpost. Lashley threw Nemeth into the ring, and Doane scored the pin. Doane looked over at Lashley, but realized Lashley was angry because of Lashley’s angry stare. The announcers speculated that Lashley didn’t help Doane, but acted in self defense because Nemeth dove over the top rope on him. This storyline is playing out at a nice pace and is excellent.

After a commercial break, it’s time for the update on Matt Capotelli, who calls in from the hospital. Capotelli cuts a great promo, swearing to come back after Jeter. But Jeter comes out to the desk and pulls the phone out of the socket and disconnects Capotelli. But here comes the bizarre angle that looked like a shoot and sure felt like one, too.

First, Jeter starts this promo, where he speaks every syllable slowly and with sign language. This was a brilliant way to get heat. Jeter speaking one syllable at a time was so irritating, and he would say “Matt Capotelli is a cripple.” Then he said “I am a champion.” This was so great. Jeter starts saying, “Cripple, champion. Cripple, champion. Cripple,” and then Dean Hill mutters something that sounded like “a******.” The crowd started to buzz, because Dean Hill is a 25 year veteran of the police force, has been in OVW forever, has never really shown anything but happy emotion, and is this big tall lovable lousy announcer. Jeter turns to Dean, and asks “what was that?” Dean says, loudly, “I called you an a******!” Jeter starts to say something, but Dean, with no mic, starts to throw a temper tantrum. Al Snow tries to console Dean, but Dean pulls his arm away and just berates Jeter about what a punk he’s become and how last week Jeter was out of control, and then takes out his earpiece, throws the ring bell hammer down, and starts to storm off, and it sounded like he said “F*** you” on the way out. Jeter said something, and Dean turned around, blood red in the face, and stormed up to Jeter and gave him the middle finger and screamed “F*** you!” at Jeter, and then stormed off the set to a thunderous response.

Jeter turns to a ringside cameraman and says, “Do you believe this?” and the ringside cameraman puts down his camera, which goes upside down and haywire on TV, which was a great Heyman touch, and the camera man says “F*** you” to Jeter and walks off as well! OK, it sure looks like a shoot. People are buying it. Me? I don’t care, this is just great stuff! Jeter turns to Al Snow, and says, “You gotta problem too, Alfred?” And now Al Snow starts taking off his watch, and stands up. It’s going to be Al who fights Jeter! But from the locker room comes Brent Albright who is being restrained by seven or eight guys, and Albright is dragging them.

Jeter is mouthing off, and Albright breaks free and they start slugging away like Edge and Matt Hardy’s first pullapart. And then came the next surprise.

With everyone pulling back Albright, in which Albright’s arms are being held, Jeter grabs Dean Hill’s empty chair and just demolishes Albright with it. This was shocking, because Albright’s hands are being held. And after last week’s beatdown on Capotelli with a chair, Jeter swinging a chair appears to be a devastating act. Albright is knocked out, and a few guys stay with him, but the rest of the guys start to walk towards Jeter, who is trapped. Jeter gets in the ring, but everyone surrounds the ring.

The guys get into the ring, and it looks like Jeter is in a for a fight with someone when Danny Davis comes running out into the ring and tells everyone to stop. Danny tells all the wrestlers in the ring to leave. He tells the wrestlers on the floor to leave. He tells the other ringside cameraman to leave. Then Danny tells Johnny Jeter to stay. The place is going nuts like I’ve never seen here, and for the first time, every single person is standing. Danny Davis is alone in the ring with Jeter and is just berating him with no mic and no ringside cameramen and Danny just starts slapping Jeter and slapping him hard. Jeter puts up a hand to defend himself and Danny just decks him. This is a fight. Danny Davis starts throwing Jeter around when Jeter grabs the title belt and cracks Danny with a thud. Jeter then took the title belt and whipped Danny Davis.

This was a great angle, and a great next episode after the Capotelli beatdown. OVW TV is must see TV right now.
