Marvel News & Views

I write this while watching Goodfellas…

My brother is stirring the sauce…

There’s a chopper outside my house…

..and yes…

It’s time to break the internet into sixteenths.

It’s time for Marvel News & Views – the place on the net that steals all of the best News, refines it, polishes it, and tells you all you need to know about it. Marvel News knows what you need, and you trust it.

So sit back, get yourself a plate of your mother’s lasagna and don’t worry about that guy you have to whack… let’s strap em’ down and lock and load.

MARVEL CHANGES IT’S NAME…
Provided by Newsarama

“Reflecting the completion of a $525 million non-recourse debt facility (originally announced in April), Marvel today announced that, effective immediately, it has changed its name to “Marvel Entertainment, Inc.”

This is all legal prattle really. Seems that since Spidey is owned by Sony, license wise, but Marvel owns the property things got all messy. Now Marvel can create their scripts and handle the entire thing in house, then it gets brought out to movie companies.

I might not even have that right – the fact is it’s a bunch of legal hooey that gives Marvel the ability to have more control over their films. The verdict is out on whether that is good or not.

MARVEL FINDS ANOTHER DESCRIPTIVE WORD FOR IRON MAN
Provided by Newsarama

Somebody’s got an Iron Man story to tell, and it’s not House of M! Oh, and it’s not that Ellis story that’s been going on for how long now?! So while people sit by their radio and wait that IRON MAN IS ON THE SCENE – they got two guys who aren’t going to hit us with crazy delays.

A mini-series by Joe Casey & Artist Frazier Irving. I’m not a huge Iron Man guy, but I figure some of you guys would like to hear about this.

BREITWEISER IS MARVEL-OWNED
Provided by Newsarama

I’ve met Bretiweiser – I’ve had drinks with the guy – and he’s a nice guy. It’s kind of a weird world to go to cons and hangout and watch guys who are going from sitting at their table, pimping their own private work – and then hear that they are doing an ongoing and are exclusive with the big boys.

Mitch will be working on “Drax The Destroyer”. Congrats!

THE ULTIMATE ULTIMATES ULTIMATELY ULTIMIZING
Provided by Newsarama

“At last! Ultimate Secret is back with a vengeance!” says editor Ralph Macchio. “I’m proud to announce top penciler Tom Raney has hopped onboard to draw the concluding two issues, doing an incredible job of bringing to visual life Warren Ellis’s cosmic concepts.”

I enjoyed the first Ultimate Nightmare, with the knowledge that it wasn’t a complete story. Then I lost track in Ultimate Secret – and now I’m completely ambivalent to the entire affair. I understand sometimes the world gets in the way of stories, but I would like to think that sooner or later comic companies will put in place ghost artists to make sure this stuff goes through on time. We all know it happens, just do it and let us get on about it so we don’t feel bilked.

Either way, the Raney stuff looks just as good as the McNiven stuff as far as I see. Maybe not as grand scale, but most definately holding onto that clean look that I generally connect with the Ultimate titles.

HULK vs. WOLVERINE vs. LOCK vs. SAHEED (Gratuitous ‘Lost’ Reference)
Provided by Newsarama

” …it appears that the writer of Marvel’s upcoming Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine will be Lost co-creator and writer, Damon Lindelof.”

Why does Marvel do that? Do something to a title that makes me interested in it. Prior to this announcement, I’m pretty sure I never would have looked at this book. Maybe glanced through Ish #1 if I had to review it, but.. meh.

Now it’s being written by the guy who came up with Lost (who isn’t JJ Abrhams) and I have to at least TRY it. Damn them.. DAAAMN THEEEMMMMM!

KEVIN SMITH MAKES ME LAUGH…
Provided by Newsarama

I’m only giving this a footnote, as the comical story of this story has been ragged on for so long, I don’t even know if I could say something here that would be qualified as funny. I am actually going to NOT buy this title on purpose, and then read the trade when it finally comes out.

ROMITA AND SENTRY AND YOU!
Provided by Newsarama

Here is a fairly lengthy interview with John Romita, Jr. about his upcoming run on The Sentry. He discusses his art style, and what makes Sentry a very different book for him to work on. As a fan of Jenkins’ original work – to then be able to see what he can do with this character in a monthly… It’s an easy ‘check this one out’.

GIANT-SIZE REVISTED… AGAIN!
Provided by COMIC BOOK RESOURCES

More of a footnote really – as this is all just press release stuff, but we get a promise to see some Thunderbird action in this anniversary of Giant-Size #1. Is that some kind of ‘reminder’ for people – for when Brubaker’s Deadly Genesis comes out?

Does Genesis have to deal with Thunderbird? Is that Xavier’s secret? Ooooo the thick plottens.

THE COMIC MOVIE CORNER

=Ghost Rider=

Ghost Rider’s been moved to July 14th 2006. I’m sure this is to counter it from going head to head with some big blockbuster. I don’t follow that kind of thing a lot, so if you happen to have a better idea as to why, drop me a line.

SPIDER-MAN 3

Topher Grace is complaining that he has to work out too much. Poor bastard, getting to be a Spidey-Villain, but he has to look all badass to do it. I’m sure the entire world cries a little tear that not only is he getting to better himself as a human, but paid to do it to.

This message has been brought to you by the ‘People Who Have Fantasies About Being A Villain In A Spidey Movie And Are Totally Bitter Department’.

There is also a guy floating around the internet that seems to say that he ‘knows’ that we’ll be seeing VENOM, SANDMAN, and HOBGOBLIN in the movie. I’ve read the article, and he is just speculating. We won’t know until they let us know.

=X-3=

“”We are in our sixth week now of photography, getting great footage with a script and story we feel is better than ever for the X-Men franchise,” Winter said.”

Everytime I read these kinds of things, I just hear this subtle little ‘screw you’ to Brian Singer. It’s just me, I’m sure…

In other X-3 News, it is official, Gambit will NOT be making appearance in X3, which I’m happy with, if only because that would make it even more packed for attention on screen. The Gambit story can easily be the whole point of X-4, but now with New Orleans and Katrina, I could see why a New Orleans cajun’ story might be a bit ‘out’.

IT’S TIME FOR FEEDBACK!

Yeah – I’d post it.. if I GOT any.. well I did get one from graduated Nexus allumni, Ben Morse.

Ben On “Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane”:

Still the most unintentionally hilarious title for a comic EVER

Thanks Ben.

TINY TINY ITTY BITTY REVIEWS

CABLE DEADPOOL #19
Are you reading this book? You should be. It is probably one of the funniest things to be coming out of the House of Ideas. Cable and Deadpool are on their way to a roadtrip, but first we are going to have to wait while Cable re-ages. Along the way, we get a very depthful look into Deadpool’s past. All with the same 4th wall breaking shenanigans (YES THAT’S RIGHT, SHENANIGANS!) That we’ve come to know and love.

DISTRICT X VOL 2 UNDERGROUND TP
I think I’m going to make note of when good TP’s come out here too.. so you can be aware. Especially when it is this book, which has a special bit of history with me. You see, it was the first Issue #1 I got to review – and felt like such a fanboy because I used such terms as ‘Sleeper hit’ and asked opening ‘How come there is little buzz for this title’. It was then that this book caught on like wildfire.. I know it had NOTHING to do with me, but it in fact was cool that I was able to tell a sleeper hit. Umm.. buy this trade.

EXILES #69
Apparently the villain we meet in this title is going to be a main villain in the book for a long time coming. It’s an interesting take to have someone the Exiles are actively fighting against – and I’m sure that’s going to send them across the Multiverse to get to him. Otherwise, meh on the story.. but that’s because I really don’t like Beak.

GHOST RIDER #1
The book I’ve been backhandedly pimping for weeks now has come out, and it was everything I wanted it to be. If you are a fan of Ennis (Specifically Preacher), and love his religious tones.. this book is going to hit home. I look forward to next issue, where I assume we’ll be seeing ol’ flameskull in action.

HOUSE OF M #6
Hey, go read my full review of this here at Nexus… but to give you a synapsis. Blargh! Yech! Ptoo! Why?! Oh.. money.

IRON MAN HOUSE OF M #3
I dig.. Giant Robots
You dig.. Giant Robots
Chicks dig.. Giant Robots…

…Nice. This has been a fun book that I think a similar title could hold up on it’s own. Good work from the former Dreamwave Allumni.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #82
This is an interesting storyline. It has so much to do with the world around Peter, that he almost seems like a side character. It’s a nice deep breather story while we get over the whole MJ thing. Not to say it’s a useless story, it’s not – but, the tone of this ‘serious’ story is really light.

UNCANNY X-MEN #464
Why is it that only when we’re leading him off to his own new title, and he’s in another world where the rules aren’t exactly the same – can Claremont write almost.. decently? I’ve enjoyed his House of M book, and am man enough to admit it. This is all an obvious lead in though to NEW EXCALIBER (because everything Xtreme is now New).

X-MEN COLOSSUS BLOODLINE #1
A Colossus family story. A family more dysfunctional than the Guthries, and it gets to be discussed here. People in Russia are dying, and they are all deep relatives to Peter. What is it that’s lurking beneath the surface of the big man? Written by David Hine (District X)… the first ish was fun, and given how much I looooove District X, I’m sure this is going to be a great diversion.

BOOKS STILL SITTING IN MY PILE THAT I HAVEN’T READ YET:::
-Fantastic Four: House of M #3
-Supreme Power: Nighthawk #1

IN CLOSING
Wow – it seems this column is just getting larrrrger and larrrrger. That’s cool. Gives me more things to talk about.

Sorry that this one wasn’t as funny as my last few, but hey I can’t be at the peak time everytime. Next week I promise you a crossover that you will never expect! How about that. That should draw you in.

Thanks again, and send in those letters.
