Oh yes…

He’s back from Boston.

He got some news for yah!

Which is what this column is about…

And no special guest this week.

It’s time to break the Internet
Into One-Hundred-and-Twenty-Eighths…

Hey kids, after spending a fine weekend with Nexus’ own Tim Sheridan, Tim Stevens, Wizard’s Ben Morse, his fine damsel Megan, and mine own Danielle – I am ready and relaxed. Let’s get to the news…

BOSTON IN THE HIZZY!

So here’s just a quick rundown of things that we learned at Boston. None of it is comics related, and is all completely self-absorbed. You are more than willing to ignore this portion of the news. That is all.

– I met Mick Foley – the dude is huge. 6’6″ at least, and broad. Nice guy though, as I gave him a business card for In His Likeness. He gave me a nice brush off without coming across as offending, but was cool enough to shake my hand on his way to his autograph session

– I saw Eliza Dushku, and let me tell you – she’s a cutie.

– If you ever get the chance, go to Fire & Ice, as it is choice food.. and lots of it.

– Danielle and I have now decided to venture forth and begin collecting Muppet figures. I’m a HUGE Muppet fan, so this gives us something to search for at conventions… and one day when I organize all my books, I’ll go to conventions for comics.

– Met with Chris Moreno of Silent Devil Studios, and sometime in the future, we’ll be doing a first for the Comic site.. a podcast interview, because I hate transcribing. Diner Talk seems to be coming back next month. We’ll see.

Now to real news.

Yeah, so I’m a representative of the Internet Comic Press.. I didn’t go do a damn thing that went with this column… unless sucking down Scorpion Bowls while sending love notes to Wizard Staffers qualifies.. Some news was found out though – and I WAS THERE TO STEAL IT FROM OTHER WEBSITES!

= = = THE TERRIFIC TEN = = =

“The 10 Terrific” are Joss Whedon (“Astonishing X-Men”), Reginald Hudlin (“Marvel Knights Spider-Man,” “Black Panther”), Allen Heinberg (“Young Avengers”), Dan Slott (“She-Hulk”), Roberto Sacasa (“Marvel Knights 4”), Greg Pak (“Warlock,” “Iron Man: House of M,” “Marvel 1602: The New World”), Daniel Way (“Venom,” “Bullseye: Greatest Hits”), David Hine (“NYX,” “Mutopia X”), Sean McKeever (“Sentinel,” “Mary Jane,” “Gravity”), and Robert Kirkman (“Marvel Team-Up,” “Fantastic Four: Foes”).

Oh whatever! Last year they were calling this ‘THE YOUNG GUNS’ or the ‘NEW WAVE’ or the ‘BLACK HAND’
or some other silliness. This is just a cheap way to gimmick up some guys. Let me ask you this though, why the hell does Joss Whedon need this kind of rub and Brian Vaughan doesn’t get it? It could have just as stupidly been ‘The Lucky ‘Leven’ .. or added Bendis ‘The Twisted Twelve’ .. Peter David ‘The Thunderous Thirteen’ .. JMS ‘The Fatherly Fourteen’.

I could do that for hours. The fact is this is silly and unnecessary and forgotten in two months.

“When I was talking to Marvel at the very beginning about doing work for them, I gave them a list of characters that I wanted to do and then they compared that to a list of characters they had holding for me,” Medina said. “…We kept going down [the list] until we got to something we both wanted, and I always wanted to do Spider-Man.”

First off, congrats to Medina – he’s a solid artist, and he came from the world of Spawn like some former Marvel Spidey guy.. so I won’t make comparisons anymore as it shall sicken all of you.

I would like to mention that I find it hysterical that Marvel and Medina both had a list that they went down. If this was me, it would probably go a little something closer to this:

“Okay Mister Hatton.. why not read off your first one.”
“Deadpool”
“We were thinking Black Panther”
“Katie Power”
“Sauron”
“Emma Frost: The Pudding Years”
“The Guthries”
“Johnny On The Spot”
“Batroc The Leaper”
“Can that be a MAX story?”
“No.”
“Not interested…”

I would then be ejected, followed by people trying to figure out how I got in the building in the first place…

BRAAAAAAINS… Thwip… BRAAAAAAINS

In December, Marvel returns to the world that debuted in the currently-running “Crossover” arc of Ultimate Fantastic Four – the universe discovered by Reed Richards where the earth had been overridden by an alien virus which turned its victims into zombies.

This is actually a pretty funny discussion with Kirkman about his new project that I am jonsed for. He even states that you don’t need to enjoy the ULTIMATE FANT FOUR to enjoy this book, but it is required reading if you are enjoying “New Avengers” or “Infinite Crisis”. With a pedigree like that, how can I say no.

The fact is, this is a comic book that is meant to be enjoyed and not needled over. I’ll be vying for the review of it, because who doesn’t love a good zombie book?

GOIN’ FOR THE GOLD!
(Courtesy of Newsarama)

The new look of the Ultimate books will be timed to coincide with the special ULTIMATE VISION backup story produced by writer Mark Millar and artist John Romita JR.. This story is a prelude to the ULTIMATE EXTINCTION limited series which concludes the Gah Lak Tus Trilogy. The Ultimate Vision backup will have six connected parts of four pages each and will appear in the following titles. (There are no current plans to make the Ultimate Vision backup story available in trade)

So it seems they will be adding gold borders to ‘important’ titles. I’m not sure if this sits right with me, but I guess it’s better than every #1 that says ‘COLLECTORS ITEM’ which always turned me off. The rest of this is complete gobldeegook to me, so I just say .. err.. neat?

With the Ultimate Extinction story having gone on for so long, I don’t know why this is an issue.. just buy it in trade and be done with it. For the record, Gah Lak Tus is a horrible name. It would be like if I called Logan Wol Ver Een. Yech.

NEW AVENGERS… TEN-HUT!
(Courtesy of Newsarama!)

Following up on their first comic released in May, Marvel will again create a custom comic for the US Military, this time featuring the New Avengers and other characters.

I heard people were ragging on Marvel for doing this – and I ask that if any of my readers find this to be a bad idea, to email me and explain why. These guys are bored to tears from what I’ve been told – and anything to get your mind off the fact that you are in a foreign land doing foreign things that might get you shot.. sounds like a plan to me.

Good for Marvel.

THIS GOES TO OUR GRADUATING CLASS…

This week saw the release of New X-Men #18, the penultimate chapter to the Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir-written book. By next month, with the release of the 19th issue as well as the New X-Men: Academy X Yearbook Special, the husband and wife team would have written 37 issues in total i.e. 19 issues of New X-Men and 13 issues of New Mutants before that as well as four issues of the New X-Men: Hellions limited series and the aforementioned Yearbook Special.

This isn’t all that big of a set of news, although Kyle & Yost who are taking over will be an interesting change of pace. This book started off strong with me, and then faded away into obscurity. Don’t know why, but it did. I have most of the issues floating around, so I should read them… is it any good?

IRON MAN & THE FREAKSHOW!
(Courtesy of Newsarama)

“”Daniel Knauf, creator and executive producer of HBO’s Emmy-award winning dramatic series Carnivale, is slated to take the reigns of Marvel’s epic Iron Man series for a spectacular six issue story arc. The first highly anticipated issue is schedule to debut Spring, 2006.

This is the standard at Marvel lately. We send in legit hollywood guys to do books, so then our properties seem that much more movie marketable. Hulk/Wolvie got Lost. Ultimate X-Men got Singher. Let’s not forget JMS is a TV Writer… I haven’t seen Carnivale so I have no idea what to expect. Then again, I’ve never read Iron Man, so I probably won’t expect anything at all.

LET’S ALL GO TO THE LOBBY.. AND HAVE OURSELVES A SNACK!

/// SPIDER-MAN 3

The cat is out of the bag… Sandman and Venom. At least that’s what Kirstin Dunst has let be revealed. The discussion is that now this might have been a publicity stunt, since those are the two villains that we all have been talking about. Is it true? This is the only place on the internet for you to find out. THE ONLY PLACE!

/// X-3

NOTHING! NOTHING HAS HAPPENED!

/// ULTIMATE AVENGERS

Lots of stuff right here about this project. Seems that it’s going to be a direct-to-DVD cartoon directed to people who read comics, and probably not people who watch cartoons.

It sounds fun, and I’m sure I’m going to watch it, but when all is said and done, it is probably not going to do well given that few things on Direct DVD do.
