Fangirl Ramblings #1

Archive

I’ve finally decided to throw my hat into the arena.

Here at the Nexus Frat house, the boys have been running free to wreak their havoc in the internet community. Whether they are toilet papering the other sites or just having loud raucous parties, it’s been an all boys club.

Well I’m here to add a little female touch to the place. I’m here to kick open some doors, add some light, and air the place out a little. I’m here to bring in a little street cred with the chicks. Every site needs their token female, and here I am to save the day.

Great, I’ve now probably just been kicked out of the comic feminist club with the token female line.

First, let me introduce myself. I’m Dani, your host, also known throughout the hallowed halls of Nexus as Hatton’s fiancee. This gig was all about nepotism baby. You might remember me from my guest appearances in Marvel News and Views and a fill in for Mr. Tim Stevens in DC News and Views. I also once wrote a review for Mary Jane for Jamie. He was lazy that week.

I’m just here to prove to you, that girls do read comics. I know, shocking isn’t it? And sometimes it’s more then just the occasional Vertigo title or manga. Double shock. I’m here to rip to shreds those misconceptions you have about the prototypical fangirl and paint you a new picture. Gone will be your stereotypical goth girl fantasy who only reads vertigo titles and Slave Labor Graphics. Gone will be your idea of the girl who only reads manga. And gone will be your misconception that all chicks who read comics know nothing about the super-hero genre.

I’m here to take all those ideals and squash them. I want to paint a new picture for you readers, the one with the happy little conventioneers, both male and female, holding hands and sharing their comics.

Now, I’m not saying that the readers of this fine website believe all these nasty stereotypes. I mean some of them are true, and that’s cool. I dig. I’ve got convention friends who fit all those profiles. I just want to expand the scope.

I’ve got a unique perspective going here. Not only have I been reading comics for over ten years now, I’ve worked in the retail business of comic books for over 7 years and I’ve been doing the convention scene for 8 straight years now. That all adds up to giving me a different opinion on the way of comics and the world. And well, I’ve got boobs.

Lots of stuff has been rampant over the internet comics community for the past few months. Articles in newspapers loving the graphic novel, articles bashing Sin City calling it misogynistic, the comic haters and the lovers, indie comics vs mainstream, a regular day in the good old comics community. I’ve been itchin’ to react, get my opinion out there, really, just ramble about anything that I want to.

And now I can. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing?

Have questions, comments, please drop me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

See you next week.
