Lost – Recap – Episode 2-5

Archive

Nice column, and a nice supplement to Lost.

I thought the episode was pretty mediocre, until the end. Hurley is a great supporting character, but I haven’t really loved the two episodes that focus on him. However, this does an excellent job of tying together his current emotional state with him winning the lottery. It is interesting that he’d rather blow up all the food than have to deal with the responsibility of distributing it. This makes me wonder about two things:

1. What exactly was it that he was institutionalized for?
2. Besides the “curse,” what happened when everyone found out about his lottery? I’m sure they will address this in a future episode, but I’m certain that his friend Qualls and/or his “date” Starla will turn out to have something to do with his attitude, perhaps magnifying his feeling that the numbers were cursed.

The good thing about this episode is that this is the first of the season that did not focus on the hatch crew or raft survivors. Yes, they were a vital part of the episode, but for the first time, we got to see a number of other characters play larger roles (Charlie, Rose, Claire, Sun).

I hope we get to see more of Rose this season. On the DVD set, the producers said they wanted more of their character, but the actress was committed to some Broadway shows. Let’s hope that she can stick around because she brings a tremendous grounding influence. Early in S1, she helped ground Jack. After Claire got kidnapped, she settled Charlie down by assuaging his guilt. And now she helps Hurley.

I had thought that the crew that captured Sawyer, Jin and Michael were from the tail section, but having Ana-Luci turn on them last week threw me for a bit. And now we have most of the tail section survivors gone? I don’t think it was Ethan, because he died a few weeks prior. However, it might have been Danielle.

I imagine they’re going to build toward the reunion of the aircraft survivors, but that probably won’t be until well into the season. (I’m guessing Feb sweeps).

I think that we’ll hear references to what became of DJ Qualls and Starla, but I don’t think we’ll see them again in a future episode. Needless to say, I’m sure they’ll be a part of his curse. As for what he was institutionalized for, it may be because he checked himself in to keep everyone else around him from having bad things happen to them.

Rose is really a great character to supplement the emotions of our main characters, and I too am hoping for a little bit more on Rose and how she came to be the woman she is on the island, what gives her so much belief and trust that Bernard is still alive.

As for what befell the tail survivors, I have three guesses:

1) The Others
2) The sickness that Danielle spoke of in Season 1
3) The Security System going nuts

With there being three weeks until the next new episode, I would definitely say that they are making sure to save their big episodes for the Sweeps period, so saying that the survivor reunion will be coming up in a sweeps period is reasonable.

Hi John,

Great recaps.

But why do people call the logo on the shark the “dharma & greg” logo?

Loosely defined, dharma means ‘ that which we have to wear/follow/practice ‘, and is from hinduism.

Try searching Google for Dharma. It isn´t a name, Though “dharma” from the series wears it well :-), but a religious concept. Don´t know that much about it, but this I remembered.

Dharma & Greg is a joke that I use from watching too many Family Guy episodes that trash the aforementioned ABC sitcom. I did not know that Dharma meant something in Hinduism, as that means that the closing farewell from the man on the film and Dharma itself has some connection to Hinduism. Thanks for your information, as this is one of those quirky things that the writers use for us to find out through Google.

Previously, on Lost: The message in a bottle washes up on shore, and the raft people meet up with the tail survivors, of whom many have been eliminated by…something.

Sun and Claire are doing laundry by the beach as Claire assures Sun that everyone on the raft is okay even if they’ve been gone for four days. Sun then realizes that she’s managed to lose her wedding ring.

Flashback: Sun’s mother is controlling Sun’s attire for an upcoming blind date. Sun doesn’t seem to be looking forward to this, as somewhere else, Jin prepares for a job interview as a friend informs him that love is on the way, and that love will look…orange. Jin makes sure that the tag is still on his tie so that he can return it after the interview, and he tells his friend that if love should call…tell it to wait.

The raft people are in the tail survivors’ hatch, as Michael assures that Jin will be reunited with Sun soon when Jin looks at his wedding ring. Ana-Lucia and the tail survivors decide that the raft people are going to help get food and water for a long trip…to the other side of the island.

LOST.

The raft people and the tail survivors move through the jungle as Sawyer suggests that they break out, away from this group, but Michael wants to know more about them. Ana-Lucia breaks everyone up to find food and water; Adebisi and Cindy in one group, Michael and Libby in another, and the final group is Bernard and Ana-Lucia, who will have the job of fishing. Jin knows a little about fishing, and at Sawyer’s insistence, Ana-Lucia takes Jin along to fish as well. Michael wants to know what has the tail survivors so scared.

Sun continues her search for the wedding ring, as Jack comes over to help her find it, before making everything about himself and relaying a story about how he lost his wedding ring and then decided to just make a replica of it at the jeweler. After that pointless story, Sun decides that she’ll be okay finding it by herself.

Jin is fishing and Ana-Lucia wants Jin to help Bernard and her fish, basically just being a bitch about not being able to understand Jin until Jin lets his actions speak louder than words, revealing that he can fish better alone than the three of them combined.

Flashback: Jin is at his job interview, as the boss knows Jin is from the village, and then rips the tag off his tie before giving him the job. His boss warns him, though, that he is not to open the door for people like Jin.

Libby apologizes to Michael for imprisoning him and his friends, and Michael’s never really thought about that, but at least Jin is his friend. Definitely not Sawyer, though. They were imprisoned because the tail survivors were scared, and they had previous trust issues. Michael wants to go inland since that’s where all the fruit is on their side, but Libby warns that’s where THEY are.

Sawyer is chilling as everyone gets their supplies gathered together. Adebisi hands over a hand-made machete to Sawyer to protect him on their trip, and then finally gives his name to Sawyer: Mr. Eko. Libby comes from the jungle, telling everyone that Michael went off by himself to find Walt. Ana-Lucia decides that they have to go now, with or without Michael.

Jin doesn’t want to leave without Michael, but Sawyer points out that Michael isn’t going to come back without his son. The tail survivors turn out to have a non-working radio as well, and that radio must’ve worked long enough for Boone to contact them, saying that he was part of the survivors of flight 815, only to get the response that they were the survivors. Jin goes to find Michael, but Eko stands in the way, so Jin punches him which gets a headbutt from Eko in response. Jin isn’t backing down, however, and he goes off…but Eko says that Michael went the other way. And then Eko decides that he’s going to go with Jin to find Michael.

Hurley tries to help Sun find her wedding ring, suggesting that maybe Vincent ate it. So they wait for him to crap it out, and Sun thinks that this is ridiculous. Hurley talks about his dog Buster, however, who crapped out $1.35 in nickels when rummaging through Hurley’s change drawer once. Sun had a puppy once as well, Bpo Bpo, given to her by Jin.

Flashback: Sun’s mother gives Sun some last-minute advice before their blind date at the hotel where Jin works. Jin bows to Sun, however, and doesn’t get a chance to look at her face. Sun and her date talk about being pressured into just about everything by their parents, and Sun takes a sip of orange juice as this date may seem to be the one.

Eko and Jin are walking through the jungle, but Jin hears a rustling sound and goes to investigate despite Eko’s warning. A boar comes charging out of the brush, knocking Jin down a hill…which has a dead man at the bottom, dead for quite some time. His name was Goodwin, according to Eko, and Eko confirms that it was the Others who killed Goodwin. They continue along, as Eko gives Jin aloe vera for a cut sustained during his fall, and they take a break as Eko asks about Jin’s wife Sun.

Sun can’t find her ring anywhere, and begins tearing up her garden in frustration. “Bad day?” Locke arrives to be awesome again, talking with Sun about how he isn’t frustrated or angry anymore because he’s not lost anymore. He was found the same way anything lost gets found: You stop looking for it.

Flashback: Sun checks her makeup before another date with Mr. Lee, as Mr. Lee borrows a flower from Jin before entering the hotel, and saying to Sun that they should see each other more, but only as friends because Mr. Lee met an American woman at Harvard and he’s going to get married to her in a few months. Sun is stunned as Mr. Lee realizes that Sun thought they were more than friends, and tries to get through to Sun but she throws up the defenses and gets away from Mr. Lee as fast as possible, beginning to tear up slightly.

Eko and Jin continue along as Eko follows the tracks of someone who can only be Michael, as the Others don’t leave tracks. Eko hears a noise, however, and they have to hide as 12 (I think) pairs of feet pass them along the trail, the very last pair toting a teddy bear with them. They emerge again as Eko assures Jin that the others don’t have Michael, as Michael crossed in front of them, which makes him a very lucky man. Jin wants to go alone, but Eko insists that he stays with him.

Flashback: Jin opens the door for Sun as she leaves in a huff, not noticing her again. As Sun leaves, a father and his son arrive at the hotel door, as the father asks Jin if his son can use the bathroom as his son can’t hold it anymore and it’s thusly an emergency. Jin tries to defend that the bathroom is for hotel guests only, so he can’t open the door. The kid himself says that he can’t hold it anymore, and Jin breaks down and opens the door…but his boss is right there, warning Jin that if he wants to keep his job, he’s going to get those two out of the hotel at once, degrading Jin’s kind of people once again as Jin has had enough, quitting his job and walking off.

No ring for Sun just yet, but now she isn’t looking as Kate wants to talk about the ring, but Sun is silly for worrying about just a stupid thing. She doesn’t want to hear anything about how the raft people are okay, however, as she reveals to Kate the message in a bottle washing up, only for Sun to bury it.

Sawyer needs water, as Ana-Lucia is fine with leaving Sawyer behind, but Sawyer wants to know if Ana-Lucia is married, since she seems fit for it. She isn’t, and then wonders if Sawyer’s gay when he says he isn’t married either, and that gets Sawyer going as he takes a drink of water and is good to go.

Jin and Eko reach a stream, getting water as Eko goes back to find Michael’s trail again. But there’s Michael across the stream, telling Jin to go back to the group. But Jin gives chase as Michael calls for Walt near a waterfall. Eko recommends that Michael not shout so much, as the Others won’t be found if they don’t want to be, as they are capable of amazing things. Jin comforts Michael, telling him that he’ll find Walt, and finally getting Michael to come along with him back to the group.

Sun digs up the bottle, as Kate reads through them for some reason, before realizing that she never said goodbye to Sawyer. Ooh la la. Kate suddenly sees something in the sand, though: Sun’s wedding ring.

Flashback: Jin goes down by a large stream, looking at a hot Korean wearing orange, but as Jin focuses on watching her sway away, he runs into Sun, and it’s love at first sight.

Sun presses her ring to her chest as she remembers that moment…

End episode.
