More Reasons Why Being Deaf Suck/Rocks

By the time that you read this column, I’ll still be procrastinating on packing for a move across town. I’m only mentioning this because I’m actually writing this while taking a break from contemplating packing.

I know the last few columns I’ve been focusing on Hip Hop, but I’ve really got a decently diverse ear. So, on the off chance that you ever see me walking to work or in the back of the bus with my hoodie on bopping to the music pumping through my ever present headphones here are ten things that could be playing;

Frank Sinatra – I’d love to say that I moved to Vegas because of Ol’ Blue Eyes, but it was actually the blue skies. Still Frank had a powerful voice and made ever song his own. There are some days that I’m mood to hear suave or just a great voice and I put in my Frank Sinatra mix.

David Bowie – I can remember when Let’s Dance was on heavy rotation on MTV (back when videos received heavy rotation.) But Bowie’s older stuff was pretty dope too, especially when he was coked out. I usually get a hankering for Bowie ever few months, and then I let my ears glam out.

Jefferson Starship – Some might prefer Airplane or just Starship, but to me Miracles is one of the most romantic songs ever. Hands down.

Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons – I can’t help it; sometimes I get a jones for high pitched voices. Yes, many of their songs sound the same, but pretending to reach those high notes is kind of fun. Plus it’s nice to visit a bygone era every now and again.

Norah Jones – Yeah, it’s not cool thing to admit, but I dig Norah. Sure she’s way trendy, but I don’t dig her because she’s “hot” right now, it’s because her music is damn mellow. Sometimes I just want to chill out and nothing mellow me out like Norah.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet – A few years back I started dipping my toes into Jazz. Since then I’ve become a real fan of Brubeck. I even went to see him in concert (which was quite the experience.) Brubeck plays true Jazz, with a pinch of pop sensibility. I’ve only got a few Brubeck albums, but The Dave Brubeck Quartet Plays Music from “West Side Story” and… gets quite a bit of play. Speaking of which….

West Side Story Sountrack – I love this flick. My Mom got me hooked on it when I was kid (imagine that, a Mother introducing her child to gangs?) When I had the opportunity to see it on the big screen I jumped. I also snatched up the original soundtrack. So be warned that if you do bump into me, there’s a very slim chance that I’ll start snapping prancing around snapping my fingers and burst into spontaneous choreography.

Sesame Street – I’ve professed my love for the songs of my childhood before, but I’ve been bumping them quite often recently. It’s crazy the memories those songs can conjure up.

The Simpsons – Like Aaron Cameron I love this show. In fact I loved it enough to buy both discs of music from the show and compile my favorites all on one disc. Sometimes it’s dialogue. Sometimes it’s music. But chances are my lips are moving, and I’m giggling as though I’m playing with a pigs’ tail.

Random TV Theme Songs – This is another one that I’ve touched upon in the past. But I’m really a fan of the lost art of the theme song. Whether lyrically or purely musical a theme can really make a show that much better. So remember that I could quite possibly be mentally singing the Family Ties duet to myself.

And there you have it, I’m not always listening to Hip Hop, even if it might look like I am. But should you ever ask me what I’m listening to I’ll answer “Public Enemy’s Fight the Power with a straight face.

Moving

The aforementioned Aaron has a great week on the Bootleg as he pokes both Fantasia and Foxy in their eyes. Nick also gets his MOP on.

KDP continues to amaze with his personal life.

Mike Eagle’s latest column is anything but pretty.

Gloomchen lists a bunch of rock stuff which I don’t know anything about so I don’t know if she’s got good taste. But you can read it and tell me. Or tell her. We like feedback.

D.P. didn’t dig Ray, but has students.

Packing

Ian doesn’t dig remixes, digs Radiohead and extremely dislikes the Killers.

Phil gets me hyped for the final months of the year. He also give props to two pretty important women.

1. Sanford & Son Theme
2. Mister Roger’s Neighborhood Theme
