Allele – Point of Origin Review

Link: Allele

The Inside Pulse:
Allele is a potentially up and coming hard rock band that could be making some major waves in the future. Their first album shows promise, but is largely unpolished and far too generic for them to ascend any higher then opening shows for major bands around Florida.

Positives:
“Point of Origin” is a largely enjoyable affair. It offers a very digestible blend of hard rock that manages not to cross into metal too often. The album isn’t very ambitious, but it is an excellent brand of mood music. There is a lot of promise in their excellent instrumental work, and vocals that aren’t grating, quickly becoming a rarity in the hard rock/metal world, by Wally Wood. It’s good background music too.

Negatives:
The album flows a bit too smoothly. Tracks sound way too much alike, and the album feels like it is two or three songs long rather then the 10 tracks it actually is. There is also the bigger issue that Allele is way too generic. The band sounds too much like every thing else out there in rock today.

Ultimately, Allele needs to find their own sound if they ever want to crack into the mainstream consciousness. There are brief moments of genius on this album, but they are few and far between. Give this band some more time to grow and create their own sound, and they could be the next big thing. This album is not however.

Crossbreed:
Take the hardest rocking Creed songs (yes, there was a time where they rocked) and have Linkin Park write the lyrics. Then filter out about 30% of the whine and toss in a bit of metal. That’s Allele’s “Point of Origin” in a nutshell.

Reasons to buy: Are you a fan of generic hard rock that has the potential to be something greater? This album could very well be Allele’s Bleach given the right circumstances. Right now though, this disc is only recommended to fans of hard rock or for people looking to try something new out, but not too new.
