A Case of the Mondays

Archive

I hope everybody is having a fun Halloween. A couple of friends of mine hosted a very enjoyable Halloween party this past Saturday night at an 80’s club in New York, and I actually walked away with the “Best Overall Costume” prize, with my homemade Cap’n Crunch costume. Greatest thanks to Chris and Justin (who decided the winner) for throwing the party and for the $100 bucks that went along with the prize. Surely this unemployed boy needed the money.

That said, I’m actually going to have to keep this week’s column relatively short. That was probably going to happen anyway, simply based on the fact that none of the TV shows I watch had new episodes on this week (for the most part).

CONTINUITY POLICE (R):

Hey, since television shows can do repeats, so can I! Anyway, in his Thursday column, Kevin Wong asked about the connection between Seinfeld and Mad About You, noting that George has watched the show in the past. Well, I’m happy he asked that, because that was actually the very first continuity error I used for this column. Here’s what I said:

On an early episode of Mad About You, Jamie (Helen Hunt) tells Paul (Paul Reiser) that he has to sell his bachelor pad now that they’ve moved in together. Long story short, in a cross-over gag we learn that Kramer (from Seinfeld) is the person subletting Paul’s apartment. It’s a funny bit, and even includes Paul asking Kramer about Jerry Seinfeld, the comic who lived next door (I’ll be referring to this again a little later). Anyway, this means that in the television universe, the “Mad About You” universe and “Seinfeld” universe are both real.

However, in the episode of Seinfeld that George and Susan get engaged, they go to sleep watching an episode of Mad About You. That means that, according to Seinfeld, the “Seinfeld” universe is real, but the “Mad About You” universe is fake. This contradicts what we had already been told.

Then, to further contradict this all, in the episode of Mad About You that Paul tries Viagra, he runs into Jerry Seinfeld on the street. This was right after Seinfeld ended, so Paul goes on and on about what a huge fan he is of the show. So, that now means that the “Mad About You” universe is now real, but the “Seinfeld” universe is fake.

So, basically, two shows cross over, telling the fans that both shows are real. Then, the cross over show defies that, and a couple years later the original show not only defies its original continuity, but also the continuity established in the cross over show. You need some sort of chart to keep track of this all.

Oh, and in the cross over episode, Paul asks Kramer about the comic who used to live across the hall (Jerry). This means that Jerry lived in the apartment building before Kramer. However, in the backwards episode of Seinfeld, we learn that Kramer lived in the apartment building first. Man, that cross over episode really messed with my head, I guess.

LOST:

Well, we have to wait another week or so before we get a new episode, but from what I understand, the next new episode a female character will die. Which one? Well, based on what I’ve read, it’s supposed to be a major character, so I’m assuming this excludes people like Rose, any of the tailies, or the French chick. I’m not interesting in hearing any spoilers, but if any readers have any predictions, I’d be happy to hear them.

Personally, I’m pretty torn. To tell you the truth, I actually really like pretty much every female on the show. Kate and Sun are my favorites, but even then, I find characters like Shannon and Claire inoffensive, and usually have fun watching them (doesn’t hurt that they’re incredibly hot). Shannon seems like the most likely candidate do die, since she seems the most expendable. Not to mention that the episode is supposed to focus around her. However, I can’t help but feel like it would be too depressing to have Boone and her be the first two people to die. It just seems too tragic. Along with that, she seems to be the only connection to Walt for the time being.

I would think that after Shannon, Claire might be the next most likely person. However, I once again can’t help but think it would be too sad to have her die, just weeks (in their time) after giving birth. On the other hand, Claire’s death may be the thing that drives Charlie over the edge, bringing him back to his drugs. I really, REALLY hope it’s not Sun, because her character is actually incredibly developed, and there’s still a lot to be told regarding her relationship with Jin. I’m also fairly confident that we won’t be seeing Kate die.

I know a lot of people would consider it a cop out, but I actually would not be disappointed if the French chick or one of the tailies died (of course, I’d like nothing more than to see Ana Lucia experience a harsh, quick death), simply because I really do like the female characters on the show.

TABOO TUESDAY:

Well, tomorrow night we have WWE’s second annual Taboo Tuesday event, in which the fans vote for the matches and stipulations they’d like to see. I probably won’t be ordering it, but I did make my votes, so here I’ll tell you what I voted for, and what I think will actually win.

WWE Championship:
John Cena (C) vs. Kurt Angle vs. HBK/Kane/Big Show
Who I voted for: Shawn Michaels
Who I think will win: Shawn Michaels

Edge and Chris Masters vs. JBL/Mysterio/Matt Hardy/Christian/Hardy
Who I voted for: Christian
Who I think will win: Rey Mysterio and either JBL or Matt Hardy

Ric Flair vs. Triple H
Stipulation: Either Submission Match/One Fall to a Finish/Cage Match
What I voted for: Cage Match
What I think will win: Cage Match

Stone Cold vs. Jonathan Coachman
Stipulation: Verbal debate/Arm wrestling/Street Fight
What I voted for: Street Fight
What I think will win: Street Fight

Carlito vs. Mick Foley (as either Cactus Jack/Dude Love/Mankind)
Who I voted for: Dude Love
Who I think will win: Mankind

Fulfill Your Fantasy Diva Battle Royal
Attire: Lingerie/Leather and Lace/Cheerleader
What I voted for: Leather and Lace
What I think will win: Toss up….probably lingerie

Eugene and (Superfly/Hacksaw Jim Duggan/Kamala) vs. Rob Conway
Who I voted for: Hacksaw
Who I think will win: Hacksaw

Kinda disappointing that they’re not doing the Intercontinental Champion vs. anyone on the roster match, but oh well. Oh, and it looks like Kane may have broken his back, leading me to wonder if there’s some sort of Taboo Tuesday curse, where one of the three possible opponents suffers a serious injury shortly before the event.

NIP/TUCK:

I don’t really have much to say about this past episode, except that my buddy Beer Pong Champ Frank made a remark last week about how this show must really be edgy, based on the fact that my review always mentions foursomes and the like. Well, this past episode revolved around an incestual necrophiliac…..so the trend continues! That’s all…

OVER ON THE FIGURES SECTION:

I’ve always been a big mark for action figures…even now at my ripe age, I like to walk by the toy aisle whenever I’m at K-Mart or Wal-Mart or Target or wherever, just to see what’s on the shelves. Because of that, I like to peruse the figures section of this very website, to see what they’ve got going on. Well, the figures crew recently posted pictures from a Toy Fair, and included photos of foam title belts, of which I am a huge fan of. I was practically salivating I was so excited about the prospect of the Spinning US and Spinning WWE titles. Along with that, they are creating belts for pretty much every major championship in existence (from WCW, ECW, and old school WWF). Oh man, so psyched, I am. Here is the page, definitely check it out:

TV FUN FACT OF THE WEEK:

Let’s take a look at Friends, this week:

Bruce Willis starred in “The One Where Ross Meets Elizabeth’s Dad” for no fee, due to a bet he lost to Matthew Perry.

Pretty interesting, huh?

Anyway, hope everyone has a great Halloween.
