I liked this issue. I liked it a lot. If you’ve read my past reviews for this title, you know that I have sort of a love/hate relationship with the comic. I always wanted it to be better than it is. And finally, with this story, it’s where it should be. It has achieved the correct balance of family squabbling and fun action. But with this issue, it goes one step further, and actually shocked me.

Last month, I spoke of the outstanding art by Greg Land and Matt Ryan. This month, I will say nothing more about it, other than the fact that it’s once again beautiful. Some of the best art in comics, right here.
So any fan of the Fantastic Four knows that Namor has a strange relationship with the team. And in true “Ultimate” style, this book turns that on its ear. I like this version of Namor (except for the faux-hawk haircut). He’s brash, rude, smart, and confident. He’s also not who we think he is. We are led to believe that Namor is the king of Atlantis.

He’s not. He’s far worse.

This issue is filled with great moments for the team. They are in danger, they get out of danger, they bicker, they hug, and then doubt themselves. Par for the course with the FF, they act more like a family than a team. That’s what makes them great.

So Namor comes and gets in between them, hits on Sue, and then actually hits her. That’s the shocking part. It came out of nowhere, and that page took us into a territory that I can’t wait to see explored next month.

So as I mentioned before, Namor is not who we thought, and is actually a far more interesting character.
