While the last issue plunged the hardworking cops of Gotham’s Major Crimes Unit into the maelstrom of Infinite Crisis, this month’s edition returns them to the all too real world of backstabbing and corruption within the Gotham City Police Department, a place where human frailties can be brought out by the strain of a thankless job.

In the previous Corrigan arc, Renee Montoya crossed the line when she battered corrupt crime scene technician James Corrigan into handing over some evidence that would clear her partner’s name. Alas in an unintended consequence Montoya has marred an ongoing investigation of Corrigan’s criminal enterprises. Now nearly untouchable, Corrigan has gone from being a petty lowlife to a genuine grade-A bastard. Meanwhile, racked with guilt, Renee has turned to some borderline self-destructive behavior.

Caught in the middle of these two is Montoya’s stoic partner Crispus Allen, who’s taken personal interest in investigating Corrigan’s wrongdoing. Alas when a narcotics sting operation goes frightfully wrong, the three parties are hurled towards a harrowing, shocking conclusion.

Gotham Central continues to be one of the most visually unique and arresting books on the market. The art team of Kano and Gaudiano provide an ominous noir feel to the proceedings, while the earth-toned colors by Lee Loughridge.

Last issue’s voyage into the chaos of Infinite Crisis reminded of how vulnerable these characters are. Now we’ve reached a storyline which may prove to confirm our greatest fears for them.
