Great-ing Gimmicks of the Past: Pretty Mean Sisters – WWF, 1999

History

It was December, 1998. Jacqueline and Terri Runnels had joined forces. You see, Terri had revealed that she was pregnant, and that Val Venis was the father. One problem. Val, being in the adult entertainment industry, said that he had undergone the “cruelest cut,” and so there was no way the baby was his.

On January 4, D’Lo Brown was in a match with Edge and accidentally knocked Terri off the apron. D’Lo had already begun working with Terri and Jacqueline and brought buddy Mark Henry (who was currently trying to woo Chyna) along.

The next week on Raw, it was revealed that Terri’s baby had died. D’Lo vowed to do whatever he could to make up for it, so he was forced into a match against Mark Henry. The match ended in a no contest (I suppose) as Terri and Jacqueline interfered on D’Lo’s behalf at every opportunity, and ended when Chyna and her friend Sammy came out to rescue Henry.

After a few weeks where nothing much happened, we got back to D’Lo helping out PMS again on the January 25th Raw. This time they were going shopping and the girls forced D’Lo to buy them some Kotex.

A week later D’Lo took on the Big Bossman, and he was already starting to protest about what the girls were having him do. PMS, however, had switched sides – even distracting the referee to avoid a D’Lo pin, which allowed Bossman to win the match. They cleared out as the Bossman began attacking D’Lo with his nightstick. Mark Henry ran out for the save.

We also found out a shocking truth tonight – the backstage doctor let it slip while treating D’Lo that Terri had never been pregnant and the whole thing was a sham.

D’Lo had no problem with recovering as he simply began teaming with Mark Henry again and they soon found another ally – Ivory.

Meanwhile, the ladies had simply disappeared. Little did they know what was on the horizon.

While all of this had been going on, Ryan Shamrock (Ken Shamrock’s sister) had been falling for Val Venis, leading to a Venis-Shamrock feud.

On February 15th, Val was taking on Billy Gunn in a match for the Intercontinental title. Ryan distracted Billy by getting knocked off the apron, which allowed Val to get the win. When she came into the ring to claim some of the credit, Val immediately dumped her.

Ryan soon began hooking up with Billy Gunn instead. After she got tired of Billy Gunn, she made her way into Goldust’s camp, along with the Blue Meanie.

On March 28th, things started heating up again as Jacqueline took on Ivory in a match on Heat. Jacqueline got the win, and then Terri burned Ivory’s face with her cigar. Tori (not Torrie Wilson) ran in and made the save.

The next night Sable and Jacqueline were set for a tag match against Tori and Ivory. Sable wound up clocking Jacqueline with the Women’s title, which allowed Tori to get the win. Then the lights went out. The Ministry of Darkness came out and threatened Sable as the other women cleared out.

Tori took on Jacqueline on the next Heat. Just when Tori had the advantage, Terri ran in for the DQ. She tried to use the cigar on Tori but the referee stopped her, and then Ivory ran in to join in the brawl.

On Raw, Ivory came out to the ring and talked about PMS. She respected Jacqueline, but had no respect at all for Terri. Terri made her way to the ring and Ivory ripped off her shirt for the trouble. Then the lights went out. As the Ministry made their way down, the women had already learned their lesson and were gone.

A week later, we had a four corners match – Sable vs. Jacqueline vs. Tori vs. Ivory. The match ended when Sable’s bodyguard Nicole Bass slid into the ring and destroyed Jacqueline and Ivory. Tori, figuring she was next, decided that now was a good time to head to the back and cleared out.

On Heat, Tiger Ali Singh was in the ring. He offered any woman $500 to come out and massage his feet, so PMS decided to take him up on the offer. Unfortunately, they didn’t like the idea of splitting the 500, so their new wrestler Meat (Shawn Stasiak) ran in and attacked Singh.

On May 9th’s Heat PMS was finally back in action as Meat took on Droz (Darren Drozdov). Outside the ring, Droz’s friend Prince Albert (A-Train) decided to go after Terri, which prompted Jacqueline to jump on his back and attack. Still, Meat ignored the distraction and got the win. After the match, Albert pitched Meat out of the ring.

On the next week’s Raw, PMS had gained a new member. Ryan Shamrock had decided to join. Tonight Meat’s opponent was Test. Test was getting ready to put Meat away when Jacqueline attacked him, drawing the DQ. As the referee argued with Jacqueline, Tori came out and appeared to be ready to join, but instead obliterated Jacqueline and Ryan.

On the next Heat (immediately before the infamous Over the Edge pay-per-view) Meat took on Brian Christopher. Despite Scott Taylor’s attempts at distraction, Too Much wound up distracted by the ladies and Meat was able to get the win. Afterwards, Michael Hayes and the Hardy Boyz attacked and left them laying.

A week later we had a mixed tag match: Test and Tori vs. Meat and Jacqueline. When the men fell outside while brawling, Tori seized the opportunity to make the pin. After that, the ladies punished Tori while Meat kept Test at bay.

On Raw, Meat had Shamrock in a one-on-one match. Shamrock won easily and was attacked by Jeff Jarrett afterwards.

It was the June 28th Raw before we saw Meat again. This time he was taking on Chaz (Headbanger Mosh) who’d just killed the Beaver Cleavage angle. Everything was going fine until Marianna (Chaz’s girlfriend) and Terri got into it on the outside. Meat got distracted and lost the match.

Meat took on Billy Gunn (who was fresh off winning King of the Ring) the next week. After he was beaten, PMS ran in and Jacqueline got into Meat’s face. Chyna DDT’d Jacqueline and Billy gave one to Meat as well.

Meat disappeared again until July 25th. On this episode of Heat, he was taking on the Godfather. Unfortunately, Meat seemed to be fairly worn out already (as opposed to Terri, who was skipping around the ring). Godfather won easily, and Terri wound up grabbing a pitcher of ice water and dumping it into his trunks (which looked like a pair of neon BVDs). Also notable about this appearance was the fact that PMS was just Jacqueline and Terri again (Ryan had been released during the month-long absence).

The next week on Heat Meat was going against Edge. Meat was more energized today, but still slow. Edge easily put him away. After the match, Terri made him kiss her foot while a disgusted Jacqueline just left.

That was the end of PMS. Terri stayed with Meat for a while (even going so far as to slip a Viagra into his drink before a match) while Jacqueline returned her attention to the women’s division.

Analysis
Well, this was a way to get them on TV, anyway. Terri and Jacqueline (and Ryan later) played up their man-hating gimmick to a T. The D’Lo storyline simply reminded us of why no woman involved with wrestling should ever say she was pregnant. It did nothing to build him up (although it did keep him out of the Mark Henry-Sammy angle, so it could be argued that it could have been worse).

Bringing Meat in was an interesting choice and added a new dimension to the storyline – now these two women have a tool they can use to attack the men they hate. Unfortunately, Meat found himself being bumped to allow more time for the McMahon vs. Austin storyline, and the entire PMS storyline died when Jacqueline walked out.

Where Are They Now?

Terri Runnels would go on to ally herself with several other young teams such as the Mean Street Posse and the Hardy Boyz. In 2002, she changed gears and became a backstage interviewer on Raw. In April of 2004, Terri was released from the WWE (it is believed at her request). Today she still occasionally manages on independent cards and has a website at http://therealterrirunnels.com .

Jacqueline would regain the spotlight in 2004 when she would defeat Chavo Classic (Chavo Guerrero Sr.) to win the WWE Cruiserweight title. In June she was released. In November and December of that year, Jacqueline would appear on TNA programming. Today she still occasionally wrestles on independent shows and is also working on filming a movie. Jacqueline’s website is http://www.dragonjackie.com .

After being released in July, Alicia Webb (Ryan Shamrock) would soon appear for WCW as Symphony, the Maestro’s manager. The following summer, she was released from WCW. In 2002, Alicia made a few appearances for TNA, but the angle she was involved in died very quickly.

Shawn Stasiak was released by the WWF in late 1999 after being caught recording private conversations between fellow wrestlers. He quickly made his way to WCW and was paired with Chuck Palumbo as the tag team the Perfect Event. When WCW was purchased in 2001, Stasiak was one of the wrestlers whose contract was picked up. He was assigned to Heartland Wrestling in early 2002, but was back up on Raw by April. Later that year, Stasiak was released. He has since retired from the wrestling business and become a chiropractor.

Next Week
If things go like I’m hoping, you’ll have a special surprise.
