[Deconstructing the Moveset] – Nick Dinsmore: From Idiot to Opportunity

Columns

So after his stint in rehab, Nick Dinsmore will probably walk outside of his house with one day left as a WWE employee. They will, most likely, not extend his contract, despite his talent, due to his history of abuse. That olive branch is generally never extended once a wrestler has a problem that large. Think back to Eddie Guerrero when he hit his problems with alcohol or Scott Hall and his problems with alcohol or Rhino’s personal problems or Steven Regal’s problems with pan killers following his early feud with X-Pac. Despite their talent, they were cut loose, left to deal with their problems on their own.

But the last time we saw Dinsmore, he was playing an over-grown child, someone who was for all intents and purposes, retarded. This will NOT be the case wherever he winds up after his contract ends. *cough* TNA *cough*. He’ll be himself, to start anyway, and work from there. He’ll be a main event player almost immediately because of his story and notoriety.
But what TNA do with him that’s original?

Well, for one, they can let him shoot. Let him talk about how he was playing the role of an idiot on national television while leading up to his run as the “wrestling savant”, he was “Mr. Wrestling”. How he was immediately pushed into the main event picture with a feud with HHH and playing heavy into the Evolution angle while he was having problems in his personal life and couldn’t deal with how he was portrayed on television. Or something.

Anyway.

The TNA anti-WWE guys will eat this up. This isn’t Christian who left on his own terms, or Rhino who was fired following an outburst. This was a man who needed help who was left out to dry. Suddenly… (we’ll use Monty Brown here) Monty Brown’s music hits and here comes Monty to ruin the celebration of Dinsmore to TNA. Why the hell would the crowd be cheering this former addict and a never-was instead of a Super Bowl champion? Someone with real merit to his name. Not some retard.

Bam! Instant feud! And it’s real, not just some comic book. It’s not just Nick Dinsmore the wrestler fighting in a wrestling match, it’s Nick Dinsmore the man fighting for his pride, his honor and his dignity. Suddenly the matches have a real gravity to them. Forget the gimmicks, forget the “Monster’s Balls” or “Serengeti Street Fights” (I know, I made that one up), just two men fighting to see who’s the better man.

That’s just my opinion anyway.

As an announcement, this will be the last “Deconstructing the Moveset.” The original purpose of the column isn’t being served, but it’s not like I’m not writing anymore. I’m going to be writing every other week on Fridays alternating with Andy Campbell. I’ll keep you in suspense as to the name of the column until then.

Have a great and safe New Year and I’ll see you in two.
