Hello all, I’m Jim Trabold, welcome to another edition of the Marvel Handbook.

Last week I had some technical problems, I apologize to everyone for that. Computer crash. Not a good one, trust me. I lost about everything. So basicly I had to do this one from scratch. I promised Daron I would have this puppy up, so I’ll do my best with all the emails I have. Daron did you miss me?

Indeed. I had to take all my aggression out on my girlfriend for the last two weeks.

Haha sure sure. Let’s start then.

Colin emails

Good day,

Whatever happened to Maverick? When his series was cancelled, did he fight off the Legacy Virus (I guess it’s cured now anyways)? Were his powers still intact? ARE his powers intact (ie, was he in House of M, and is he still a mutant?)?

Maverick is still around. Actually the original Maverick. Christopher Nord is now known as Agent X and part of Weapon X again. He has been in that series when it was around. He was cured of the Legacy Virus like everyone else but came close to death after a fight with Sabretooth in which he was tossed off a roof. Weapon X remade him .

Chris Bradley believing that Maverick was dead replaced him. He became the new Maverick. Agent Zero killed him though in a fight and found out the truth finally going against Weapon X programming.

He likely still has his powers thanks to Weapon X tampering at the least. So Decimation likely didn’t effect him

Was there ever a TPB of his series?

They never made a trade but that was a rather good series so may be they will with fan response. Remember the fans do help get trades and new series on the shelves with demand.

thanks

Welcome

Jim H emails

I’m glad to see my trade question sparked a good discussion. I have a couple more questions for you guys.

Very good. We love debates here. You want to spark more of them that would be fine with me.

Oh yeah anything to get people fired up at me”¦that’s really what we’re all here for”¦

1. Where was professior X during House of M? First, he was supposed to be dead. Then they hinted that he was still alive. Did I miss the part where they said where he was during all this?

Actually there where a few theories where he was.

1. He was remade into Layla Miller. (This theory came about from her powers and the fact she was not seen before HOM )

2. He was put some where by Wanda that will be revealed in Deadly Genesis (Likely since they said they would tell you in the series)

3. He was dead but not buried in that grave (Why keep Magneto’s greatest enemy and threat alive?)

4. Wanda merged with Xavier in some form and didn t know it. ( Hey any thing is possible. )

2. In an older Handbook column, you listed some of your favorite runs by one writer on a series. I was wondering where you would rank Dan Jurgens’ recent run on Thor. I thought it was one of the most amazing runs I have ever read. Your thoughts???

I would put him right after Walt Simonson

Top 10 Thor writer runs:

1. Walt Simonson
2. Dan Jurgens
3. Roy Thomas
4. Gerry Conway
5. Stan Lee
6. Tom De Falco / Ron Frenz
7. Mark Gruenwald / Ralph Macchio
8. Ron Marz
9. Len Wein
10. Alan Zelenetz

Thanks again

Welcome. I bet Daron might’ve listed his to.

Oh yeah, I’ve never been a very big Thor fan, but Jurgen’s run, especially the last two (or so) year story was quite good. I felt it got a little off track towards the very end, but all in all I’d say it was definitely my favorite Thor storyline. In fact when we first launch over at 411 I wrote one of my first Missing The Boats on that story.

Rhuid emails

Great edition this week. I first want to say that the Nexus is the only reason I even keep going to IP, so hopefully you guys will keep up the great work. I have two questions for you guys, as well as my own trades from Marvel/DC.

We’ll do our part as long as you do yours and read us. Our site depends on people like you.

My first question is if you had the opportunity to renovate any character in Marvel, who would it be? I’m talking full creative control, freedom to do whatever you wish. What character would you give a complete overhaul to?

Hmmmmm Well I’m not going first string. No need to do it.

Not going with one of my favorites like Surfer or a few others either. They don t need it.

What I would do though since it seems your giving me control of Amazing Fantasy in a way. I would redo one character. Black Knight. Hey I might even keep Dane. I would just update him. He would be a cool character. That back history and the like really should be shown more fully. You know the line of the Black Knights. We know it’s passed down from one family member to another. I could cover that more and go threw a little of each till we got to Dane. I might get rid of Dane in the end and have him hand over the mantle in the end. It just seems like an idea that would work

After him I would do characters like:

American Eagle
Blue Shield
Cloak and Dagger ( might keep the originals and just finally use them right )
Deathlok
Dr Druid
Hellcat
Man-Thing
Quasar ( again might keep original and just finally use him again )
Satana Hellstorm and Daimon Hellstorm ( I’d love to use and see them again )

I bet I can go on. I’d love to see a lot of old characters again even if the same just different look at them.

I think the character I’d most like to see updated is Moon Knight. He’s always been a favorite of mine, and the last couple times they messed with him it was”¦well”¦terrible. I don’t think the costume really needs to be changed much, the ghostly white look still looks good, and the man underneath could stay or go. If he went, I’d probably replace him with a woman. Marvel doesn’t really have many female “street fighters.” The character just needs to be taken more seriously than he/she has in the recent past.

Also, a side question here. Don’t you think spandex is a little out of date now? Seems like most heroes and villans nowadays would just stick with regular clothing even while fighting / committing crimes. I understand why costumes are used, to help identify each character and some are used to conceal identities, but I wanted your thoughts on it

Well let’s see. I can see some still using it. I mean hell you know as well as I do that Spidey just don’t look right without the costume in some form. The same for DD and a few others.

They could use special materials and the like. Remember for instance that the X-Men are now wearing special body armor like outfits not truly spandex . Cap wears light weight “duralumin ” chain mail beneath his costume as an added precaution. The costume itself is made of fire-retardant material. So in reality it’s not uncommon that they change things but make it somewhat the same.

As far as your spandex question goes, I think it’s pretty safe to say that as long as there are superheroes they will for the most part be wearing spandex. It’s really just a part of the genre.

Second question is a little more personal and a question that I think could be stretched out over a few columns, because I’d like to see who the rest of the readers identify with the most. We’ve all had those moments where we wished we were a certain superhero/villan. We identified with one over the others. So, what superhero/villan do you identify yourself with the most? I’ve always highly enjoyed Lex Luthor. Now I’m not a wealthy guy, but I do identify with his recent portrayal, as a guy who is doing what he thinks is right. He justifies his actions by the “ends justifying the means”. Plus, I’m bald, so maybe that’s why. Honorable Mention has to go to Scott Summers, a by the book kind of guy. I’ve always been that way in everything I do..kind of sad..but at least it’s safe.

Hmmmmm who do I identify with. Let ‘s see.

Uatu the Watcher lol I’m half kidding. In many ways I have his mind. He knows the Marvel universe and keeps constant watch over it. I do the same thing. I’m just not bald with a big head.

Peter Parker: Yep. I was a total geek in grade school and some in high school. I really still am a geek in many ways. Again the brains. Got the brown hair and glasses. Just not geeky ones like old school Pete.

Bruce Banner / Hulk: Jim Smash. I’m sort of not kidding here. I’m like the Hulk when I get pissed off. I’m not myself I know that.

So I gave you 3. Daron your turn.

If you know me, you probably already know the answer to this question. The character I most identify with is undoubtedly Wally West The Flash. To be brutally honest, I’m not sure we have much in common (other than having hot Asian women :) but I think he’s just an easy character to connect with. From Mark Waid to Geoff Johns, Wally has had some great writers writing him very well. His book has always been much more personally dealing more with characters than just over the top action.

My trades

Lex Luthor for Norman Osbourne.

I almost added Wilson Fisk to the trade instead of Osbourne, but I think in the overall scope, if you’re going to have an A-List villan swap, then Osbourne should be it. Some people (and you guys) may disagree, but I think that Osbourne is probably one of the best fleshed-out villains in Marvel, and I think he could use his wealth and maniacal ways to really make things crazy in DC. Osbourne would pretty much be a mentally-unbalanced version of Luthor. Money, power and tons of scientists to make new gadgets to make life interesting for the Marvel good guys.

Luthor has and always will be my most favorite character, even more than Supes/Spidey/Bats/Scarlet Spider..yes I said Scarlet Spider! Back on track, Lex could without a doubt, become the greatest villan in Marvel history. So many villans now lack the subtle finese (sp?) that Lex empowers. He doesn’t get his hands dirty, he has other people do his dirty work for him. He’s got plenty of wealth and enough political influence to get almost anything done. Plus, like it was said, I’d love to see his stance on Mutants as President.

I like this trade. It makes sense. Again I can see Luthor in Marvel all the way. He’s just so easy to trade over. Plus with DC they can somehow keep Luthor around knowing them with Infinite Crisis.

Agreed, good trade.

Spiderman for Superman

Bottom line, the two marquee stars from each company. Not only would it create a huge boost in sales, for Spider-Man #1 on a DC comic, but the sales for Superman #1 Marvel would be through the roof. The different storylines that could instantly pop up would be downright exciting. Spider-Man taking on Luthor, joining JLA, feuding with Batman, banging the crap out of Wonder Woman. On the flip side, Superman in Marvel would be one of the best acquisitions ever. The instant storyline between him and Spider-Man, or Supes/Goblin, the possibilities are endless. Also, I’d love to see what Superman thinks about Namor, considering he and Aquaman are essentially the same.

NO! NO! NO! I don’t want that trade no way in creation.

Top 5 reasons No:

1. I hate Superman
2. I hate Superman
3. I won’t trade Spidey
4. I think Marvel has it’s own Superman in a way and he’s cooler. His name: Sentry
5. Did I say I hate Superman?

I don’t like this trade at all. Sorry.

I disagree. I think it’s a decent trade, if you’re going to trade big characters you have to make them as even as possible”¦and this one is pretty even.

Captain America for Brainiac

This would be a little bit of an unfair trade, as Brainiac far more intelligent, but the things he could do would be downright staggering in the Marvel Universe. Captain America would be really good, because you’ve got your All-American hero, taking the place of Superman. I think it’s easy to say that Superman and Captain America are pretty much thought of as “Super Patriot” type of guys, and while they’re both pretty bland as far as being Boy Scouts almost, I think Cap being in DC would be very interesting, especially if he and President Lex locked horns. Brainiac on the other hand, would just be a lot of fun to see run rampant.

This one isn’t to fair on Marvels defense here. I would place Brainiac in Ultron category and Ultron being the better Android. Marvel would lose one of the oldest characters and most patriotic. Even Supes can’t replace Cap there or in his leadership. Cap is the ultimate leader. Best leader in comics arguably.

I’d have to say this is an odd trade (and not just because it’s a hero for a villain trade – I thought we were doing heroes for heroes and villains for villains?) but also because unlike the Supes/Spidey trade this one is a bit uneven. Brainiac might be a high-list villain, but Cap is still a good deal above him.

The Flash for Quicksilver

Pretty much an even trade. Kind of like trading Namor for Aquaman, or Thor for Thor. Still, the things that could come out of Quicksilver and Aquaman hitting the bricks and heading to the other company could revitalize both characters. Flash just isn’t what he used to be, in my opinion at least, and Quicksilver, well he’s about as worthless as possible. The only time you ever see Quicksilver is when they need a character to fill in a blank box. A trip to the rival company could do both guys some good…even if it’s short term.

Poor DC would get the losing end of this deal. Especially if it’s Wally. Wally is cooler, faster and just a better character. I’d take the trade if I’m Marvel but I’d think DC is nuts.

*Resists urge to comment on the “Flash isn’t what he used to be line.* I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t an even trade for any wearer of the Flash mantle. Every single member of the Flash family is not only more powerful than Pietro, but they’ve all had much better characterization than he’ll probably ever have. But past all that, I think the trade is a bit superfluous, at least for DC. They have SO many speedsters that they really don’t need another one. It might be a big deal for Marvel since they’ve never really done anything with their speedsters, but as Jim said, there’s no way I’d make this trade if I was DC.

Thanks
Rhuid (I also think Rhuid would make a good third tier villan name in Marvel..better than Toad..heh)

Haha yep I admit that name would be cooler then Toad. Your welcome too.

Later yo.

Quick question, why do you refer to the Marvel Universe as 616 all the time?

Ah, because Marvel universe that we all know and love is universe #616.

The term originated from writer Alan Moore’s run on the Captain Britain comic produced by Marvel UK in the 1980s, in which the main timeline was designated as “616” by Merlyn, the protector of the multiverse.

Mainstream titles: 616
Ultimate universe:1610
Spider-Girl: 982
Supreme Power: 31916
Age of Apocalypse: 295
1602 : 311
2099 : 928
Marvel Knights 2099: 2992
New Universe: Earth-148611
Squadron Supreme: 712
Earth X: 9997
New Universe: 148611
Mangaverse: 2301
Days of Future Past: 811

For some other numbers and more check out Official Hand book to the Marvel Universe: Alternate Universes 2005 because I could go on forever

< I > Also I don’t see how Wonder Woman could be considered a significantly bigger star than Hulk. I think if you ask someone who never read a comic book to name a super hero both would be named frequently . ( I think the most common answers would be 1 – Superman, 2 – Spiderman, 3 – Batman , 4 – Hulk , 5 – Wonder Woman , 6 – Captain America and everyone else would be statistically insignificant )

To compare Wonder Woman has been in comics since the 1940s, been part of the ensemble in various Super friends / JLA cartoons from the 70s to present, and had a TV show in the 1970s and maybe a handful of toys.

Hulk has been in comics since the 60s, had numerous solo cartoons from the 60s to the present, had a TV show in the 70s, Three made for TV movies in the 90s, a movie just three years ago which was Universal’s tent pole release of the summer season that year, and numerous video games going at least back to Super Nintendo to the current systems, plus a plethora of toys and models over the years including a whole slew of them when the movie came out. I think he even had a monster truck. < / I >

Ah but you also left out one of the biggest stars Marvel has Wolverine. Most every fan would mention him frequently.

In order top 5 Marvel to me:

1. Spider-Man
2. Wolverine
3. Hulk
4. Captain America
5. The Fantastic Four

But as you said Hulk would be a bigger hero than Wonder Woman in many ways. Wonder Woman worked better with the others. You know the JLA. Since she was used more in JLA and Super Friends. She didn’t have her own cartoon like Supes or Batman. She had a show but so did Hulk. Hulk beats her in most categories.

Hulk may have had more tv appearances and such, but Wonder Woman is iconic, where as Hulk is not. I’m not saying non-comic people wouldn’t recognize him, he’s just not the icon that Wonder Woman is.

Ok, Multi-part question referring to Mutants.

What are the different classes of mutant. I heard about Omega class (Assuming they are most powerful) but are their other classes such as Alpha?

Actually I think logically there would be:

Alpha
Beta
Gamma
Omega

As to the classes… that makes the most sense. We just haven’t gotten definition of all of them.

What do the classes mean and how does a mutant fit into this category?

Being we only really recently learned of Omega Class I can discuss that.

Omega: The premise was that eventually, all organic beings would ‘evolve’ into a more efficient sentient energy-based lifeform. We’ve seen some mutants that already do this.

Who are all of the Omega Class mutants and what makes then Omega Class?

We are not fully clear who all of them are yet. But here’s who we know or have an idea about:

Apocalypse
Bishop
Cable
Cannonball
Chamber
Cyclops
Franklin Richards
Havok
Iceman
Jean Grey
Kid Omega
Living Monolith
Magneto
Malice
Mikhail Rasputin
Moonstar
Polaris
Professor X
Psylocke
Rachel Summers
Shard
Storm
Sunfire
X-Man

The old theory also was that the twelve would all be Omega Class mutants. The old Nimrod idea. I added the Twelve as well

Finally… a bit off topic but who is the Livinig Monolith? I was out of comics for a good 8-9 years in the 90’s-2002. I think I misses out on a lot of X-Stuff that I never caught up on

Actually Living Monolith predates the 90s in a way. He’s old school as they come.

Real Name: Ahmet Abdol
Occupation: Planetary body
Other Aliases: Living Pharoah, Living Planet
Place Of Birth: Cairo, Egypt
Marital Status: Widowed
Known Relatives: Filene Abdol (wife, deceased), Salome Abdol (daughter, aka Faya Sahid, deceased), unnamed sister (deceased), unnamed brother-in-law (deceased), Leila O’Toole (niece, aka Plasma), various unnmaed nieces and nephews (some deceased)
Group Affiliation: Leader of the Cult of the Living Pharaoh

Powers: absorb large amounts of cosmic radiation to increase his size, mass, strength, and resistance to injury, and the projection of energy as concussive force, intense heat, or sonic vibrations

History: Ahmet Abdol was a professor of ancient Egyptology who discovered he had the ability to manipulate cosmic energy, mainly by absorbing it and projecting it as energy blasts. Deciding to use his powers for his own personal gain, Abdol created a cult around himself and set about his plan to rule the world. Abdol was the Living Pharaoh while in his normal appearance, but once he obtained enough cosmic energy, he would increase in size, mass, and power, thus becoming the Living Monolith.

Abdol discovered that another mutant, Havok (Alex Summers, brother to Scott Summers also known as Cyclops) could absorb and project cosmic energy more easily then Abdol could. Abdol kidnapped Havok and used him to increase his power. Abdol has mainly been an X-Men villain, usually using Havok to become the Living Monolith. He has also used other superheroes, including the Fantastic Four (who gained their super powers from exposure to cosmic rays). He even killed his own daughter to achieve his goal. Though he is usually the one pulling the strings, another X-Men villain, Apocalypse, wanted to use the Living Monolith to drain the powers of other superbeings. Abdol went on a rampage, and several Marvel heroes attempted to stop him. Eventually Abdol grew so large that Thor had to throw him into outer space, where the Living Monolith eventually became a Living Planet, similar to Ego.

The Living Monolith’s history was later retconned. It was revealed that Abdol’s powers did not spring from an inherent mutant, but rather from a procedure performed on him by Mister Sinister. Sinister spliced certain x-genes from Alex Summers into his genome, thus giving Abdol the ability to absorb cosmic energy. Since his powers were genetically similar to Havok’s, this explained why their abilities interfered with one another’s.

THANKS A TON!!!! These questions have been making me lose sleep!

Welcome if you have more questions please email us again.

The Marvel gift guide.

As everyone knows Marvel fans are quite interesting to shop for. Sometimes it can be hard. You can’t get comics because what if they have them? Well there’s ways to get them statues, trades, comics and tons more. Just as long as you know what they want. Let’s go threw some of the many options what a Marvel fan would want for Christmas.

1. DVDs. As everyone knows Marvel is doing the Movies and of course most are now out on DVD. This year we had Elektra, Blade Trinity, and Fantastic Four all out. So see if your favorite Marvel fan has them in their collection. Plus always check for the older DVDs to. X-Men, Spidey, DD, Hulk and the like. Some collectors still don’t have them all.

1a. DVDs continued. Did you know that Marvel also does other DVDs? No? Well they do and I’m pretty sure fans might really like some of these to. The old 1960s Spider-Man collection is out on DVD. The 94-95 Fantastic Four cartoon is out on DVD. There’s also other Marvel cartoons on DVD as well. I’m pretty sure if you ask Blockbuster or your local place that sells DVDs they will help you.

2. Comics on CD-Rom. Ok this will help give your favorite comic fans comics without having to go threw the back issue bins. (true most fans love touching the books like myself but they are good to have) Currently out there are the full Fantastic Four series and the Amazing Spider-Man series. There are others coming to. There’s also mini dvds with smaller amount of comics on them with other heroes you can get.

3. Trade paperbacks. Now you’ll have to make sure your favorite fan don’t already have them in their colection in some form but most fans will list a few trades they want if you ask them to. After all we all have list.

4. Statues. Now I’m not saying to go run out and buy that $200.00 Bowman Thanos statue here but if you really want to buy me one go ahead. Ok seriously. I’m talking mini statues and ones on sale around this time at comic shops. So why not see if you can get them a nice statue of their favorite hero.

5. Comics of course. After all nothing is better then holding the real thing in your hand. Get a list of them. Always wise anyway. No matter what your plan is GET a LIST! There’s Ebay for all these options and of course small collections as well. Small collections are fun to sort threw. I like them myself.

6. Action figures. For those younger readers. For the older ones to. Some of us want a little anything Marvel. Again make sure they don’t already have what you get them.

7. Games. Now this goes into two catigories. This one video games. With Marvel games on PSP and X-Box why not go look for them and get them. X-Men Legends, Hulk Destruction, Punisher, Ultimate Spider-Man and more are out there. Check to see which console they have and make sure they don’t own it.

7a. Games. Now we talk board games. There’s Monopoly versions with Marvel, FF, X-Men, Spidey and more. Plus the old classic Marvel Trivia Game. I love that one.

8. Other ideas:

a. Heroclix: Some fans love these things. Get the boxes though.
b. Trading Cards. Marvel has the Vs game out there now.
c. Christmas Ornaments. There’s some out there try that.
d. Clothing. T-shirts are available with the many heroes. Ask of course before you buy
e. Look around. Some times you’ll find something unique that your favorite fan will love.

Now I know mostly fans read my article so you could always give your relatives and the like a link to this. Maybe print it out and add your own. But I wanted to help best I could
