1/5/06 6:42 PM – WSOBP VII

Team France are your first WSOBP world champions. After four hours of tournament, the guys who started, and ended, the day hot are the ones who took down the world title. They ran through the winners bracket and killed the single game in the finals in one game. Six wins through the day gave them the victory.

What I said wound up to be pretty much true. The team that got hot would take down the tournament. In the six cup format, it boiled down to who hit cups quickly when it counted. These two guys couldn’t miss today, and they have five large in their pockets because of it.

The IronWizard coalition made it to the final four. They ruined their first three opponents during the day. We took a halftime break for lunch, which they didn’t eat, but when they came back they’d taken enough time to cool completely off. Their first game back they lost by two. By their last match, they had done enough to be in the final four. They got their final match down to one cup. The Wizard had one shot for the tie and shot it long, knocking them out of the tournament. He wasn’t happy about the whole thing, but what can you do. When you’re cold, you’re cold.

In the final four, a team from Long Island named “Slippery Fetus” came out of the losers bracket to challenge Team France in the finals. They’d have to win two to be champions. In the end, they couldn’t stop Team France. Everything was falling for them and it was their day.

As for me, I shouted myself hoarse in the last match involving the Ironwizard Coalition. I didn’t really care about the finals, though I pulled for New York. After a morning of Citron and Dr Pepper, and an afternoon of Rum and Dr Pepper, the Wizard had enough for the day. He vanished and no one, including him, has any idea where he disappeared to for a couple hours. After the check presentation and the awards ceremony (including the award for Best Costume, I decided it was time to go over to the casino and lose some money. After all, why be in Nevada if not to lose money?

This is it from Nevada, when I finally get back to New York, I’m going to write a full retrospective on this whole experience. I think this final column will probably be posted on Monday night… I will be back in New York by then. Hopefully I will have time to get the retrospective written by Wednesday morning.

Until then, I really want to thank the guys from BPONG.com for setting up a great tournament and running it as well as could be expected in the first year of running something this big. The people from the Oasis casino in Mesquite also put on a hell of a spread for us. There isn’t a whole lot to do in the town other than their resort, but they did a great job with what they had.

Stay tuned for the retrospective this week.
