Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-11

Archive

So after a somewhat lengthy holiday break, Invasion is back to new episodes this week. I hope everyone enjoyed the repeats. It is amazing how many things I missed the first time around; it almost seemed like I was watching an entirely different show.

Sorry the recap is a bit late this week but I was sick on Wednesday so I didn’t complete it until this evening.

This week’s episode opens with another survivor meeting. One of the survivors is talking about how accepted she feels by the group and how they embrace her change.

After the meeting we learn that her drunken husband is less accepting of that change and he yells and her and roughs her up a bit. A large number of the hurricane survivors jump the man and start kicking him repeatedly. Mariel rushes in and makes them stop. They do so, but when she starts calling for someone to call 911 everyone just stands there.

Back at the Underlay home, Tom is insisting that Lewis, fresh from his chainsaw reconstruction, stay with them until he finishes recovering. He seems less than enthused by the idea but as Rose is out of town, he gets put in her room until he recovers from his ‘gunshot wound’.

Lewis doesn’t feel comfortable lying to people about his injury. He is also feeling conflicted about his choice to cut off his arm. He fears that he may have gone against God’s wishes. Tom does his best to convince him people would have reacted badly to his new arm and that God would not want him to have to go through that.

While everyone else is having adventures in Florida City, Larkin and the kids are lounging at a hotel pool somewhere in northern Florida. Rose has Jesse throw some quarters into the water for her and when she cannot get them herself, an attractive young lady dives in to get them for her, capturing Jesse’s attentions in the process. She sure can stay underwater for a not at all suspiciously long time. Yes sir.

Mariel is back at the hospital now and as she enters her office, Russ is there. He says he has something very important to show him at his house.

At Russ’ house, he shows Mariel the human/creature remains and says that it is the skeleton of her husband as well as the remains of an invasive creature which has overrun the swamp. Dave and Russ tell her that her husband isn’t who she thinks he is and might not even be who he thinks he is.

Mariel is quite skeptical about their claims and becomes outright angry when Russ suggests the kids aren’t safe at Mariel’s house. Mariel says she is their mother and then Russ asks if she really is. He tells her that Dave told her about finding her own body in the swamp. Mariel says it was someone else’s body. She then says if the kids are not back to her house by later that day she will bring in a large number of lawyers to do something about it.

Back at the Underlay household, Kira delivers some food to Lewis. This provides the two an opportunity to talk. Kira asks him how he got shot, and Lewis pauses as if unsure what to say. He doesn’t have to make a decision however as Tom walks in and Kira leaves.

Lewis says it wasn’t just his arm that changed. He asks Tom if he came back all different. Tom confirms that he did but says that it is a good thing. As Tom leaves we see Lewis doing the water obsession thing that most of the changed people have done.

Back poolside, Jesse is still staring at Emily, who is now back to lounging in a chair. Rose comments that she has never seen someone who could stay underwater so long. Larkin comes by and she and Rose leave to go shopping.

With Rose gone, Jesse decides to approach the mystery girl. He tells her that she is a good swimmer. She asks him if he’s gone in the water and he says his is more of an ocean person as chlorine bothers him. She mentions that she was caught ‘down south’ during the hurricane though doesn’t mention an exact location. She introduces herself as Emily and asks if his room has a bathtub. He says it does although it takes him a little while to catch her implication.

Russ and Dave, in the aftermath of Mariel’s departure are arguing over what to do. Dave wants to tell the world about what they have found while Russ wants to try and find a way to protect his family, including Mariel, before they tell the world.

Back at the hospital, Tom and Mariel are looking in on the beating victim but quickly leave. Mariel tells Tom she wants to know what really happened to her the night of the hurricane. Tom says he does not know everything but admits he knows more than he has let on. He says he only withheld the information because he loved her. But now he is not only willing to tell her what he knows, he is going to show her.

But first, Jesse has gotten Emily back to his room. She asks him to take a bath with her but Jesse, always the player, suggests that perhaps they could watch TV for a while first. He turns the TV on and the two have a brief discussion before Emily decides to take a bath, with or without Jesse. She is mostly naked by the time she gets to the bathroom door, giving Jesse further incentive to turn the TV off.

But before we can learn if Jesse’s going to have that bath or not, we are taken back to the Underlay kitchen where Kira is washing some dishes. Lewis is carrying his tray back to the kitchen but gets distracted staring at the water.

Once Kira shuts the water off, she has a discussion with Lewis. He mentions how she must have also been tested, referring to her deceased mother and talks about the importance of faith. She shocks him by revealing that she’s not huge into the whole God thing. Lewis says that surely Tom must have taught her about religion as he knows that Tom is a man of faith. Kira says that is he is she wouldn’t know as Tom never really talked about it with her.

At this point Lewis clues in that maybe Tom had been manipulating him all the times he used God to convince him to do something (most notably the arm cutting incident). He wants to leave and now.

When Kira tries to stop him, he says that he thinks he may have committed a terrible sin by throwing away a wonderful gift that God had given him. He then asks Kira, in a rather creepy way, if she will listen to his confession.

On to less creepy followers of God as Russ meets with Father Scanlon. He asks about what happened at the church. On an interesting side note, Father Scanlon mentions they are thinking about moving the survivor group to somewhere other than the church because they have so many members now.

Russ asks if his kids are safe with Mariel and the Father tells him that while everyone else attacked the man or just stood by and let it happen, she made them stop.

Speaking of Mariel, Tom is taking her somewhere in the swamp. He walked her there the night of the hurricane though she does not remember it. He wanted to show her the lights he saw the night of his plane crash. They watched the lights fall into the water but shortly after that Mariel just vanished. Tom says there was nothing he could do to help her.

Mariel reacts rather badly to this revelation and accuses Tom of letting it happen to her. She vows that she is not going to let whatever this is beat her and storms off, ignores Tom’s pleas to not leave him.

Back at the hotel it seems that Jesse has indeed shut off the TV as he is now in the bathtub with Emily. The two are having contests to see who can hold their breath the longest, with Emily, not surprisingly, the clear winner. Jesse comments that she is weird but in a good way.

Emily tells him that she lost her friends a few weeks ago. She says she was in a sorority and they always had an ‘us vs. them’ mentality. So when she changed, she was made into a them. But she’s happy to have met Jesse. The two kiss but then Larkin starts knocking at the door of the room.

Fortunately, there’s two exits from the hotel room so Jesse hurries Emily out the other door. As she leaves she gives him another kiss and thanks him for being a ‘them’.

Once Emily is gone, Jesse lets Larkin and Rose in. He says he was taking a bath and uses that as his excuse for taking so long to answer the door. Larkin sets a paper down and they leave. The camera helpfully zooms in on a section of the paper that says “Three sorority sisters drowned in pool, fourth girl sought” with a picture of Emily.

Tom, meanwhile, arrives home and is looking for both Mariel and Lewis but neither of them are there to be found. Tom does find Kira however who tells him that Lewis left but first asked her to hear his confession. He told her the story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son and how God stopped him at the last minute. Kira thinks that Lewis thought of Tom as being like Abraham and when he realized Tom was just a guy, Lewis took it pretty badly.

Tom goes out into the hall and makes a phone call. We don’t get to hear who he is talking to but he tells whoever it is, that he is ready to do the thing they were talking about. He then goes and begins unlocking the two locks on the infamous door of mystery.

Mariel, meanwhile, has gone to Russ’ house. She is getting a cat carrier (for the cat, presumably) and wants to take the kids and go. Russ tells her that the kids are not back yet however. Mariel is mad that Russ thinks she could hurt her kids but Russ says he wants to help her. Mariel says that whatever happened to her, the part of her that loves her kids is still there. Russ and Mariel hug, and then, in a turn that probably isn’t going to make Larkin too happy when she finds out, they kiss.

Later on, Russ meets with Dave. Dave says he hid the skeleton in the crawl space for now. Russ thinks maybe they should just bury it.

Russ then goes inside to find a line of candles. He follows the candles to find Larkin waiting for him in bed. She got back early and she dropped the kids off after Tom called and said he had something planned for the kids. Russ, fearing these plans may not be of the happy kind, rushes off.

Mariel meanwhile has come home. The power is off and there doesn’t seem to be anyone there. She looks around the house before finding a note. Russ comes in to find her reading the note and we learn that Tom has gone and taken the kids with him. But where? (cue dramatic music)

Pretty solid stuff this week as things seem to be picking up steam after the hiatus.

I’ve got to say, Lewis, who initially seemed like a sweet and earnest kind of guy, is coming off as very creepy with his obsessive interest in faith and religion (at one point in the episode Kira joked that her dad would want to be more like the Dali Lama and he said, “But he’s a Buddhist!” in much the same way you would expect someone to say, “But he’s a Nazi!”. I guess anyone who would be willing to cut his own arm off with a chainsaw because he thinks it is God’s will, isn’t going to be anywhere near normal to begin with though.
