The Movie

First off, I want to say that this was the first time I have seen this movie from beginning to the end. I have seen parts of the movie, but never the whole thing through. Nor have I seen Guy Ritchie’s Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, which some have claimed this movie was like. I just never found the interest to watch these two movies. Therefore, this is a review from an “outsider’s” perspective. From someone who is not a fan of director, Guy Ritchie.

The plot of this movie looks a little complex on paper. Basically..it’s about a bunch of guys chasing after this stolen diamond. But a lot happens during all of this. Franky Four Fingers steals this diamond in Antwerp. He is supposed to deliver it to Cousin Avi in New York. However, Franky loves to gamble and lose (that’s why he has only four fingers). So he stops in London to place some bets. That is where he gets kidnapped by two thugs hired by the Russian, Boris, he just met. Cousin Avi has to come to London to find Franky and the diamond. He enlists the help of Bullet Tooth Tony and some others along the way.

The diamond heist is connected to another form of illegal activity, which is illegal fighting. How? Brick Top owns the bookie office where Franky gets kidnapped from. Brick Top also is part of the underground circuit of illegal fighting, boxing, dog fights, whatever involves blood and pain. Turkish and Tommy are two amateur boxing promoters, who get pulled into match fixing by Brick Top. Brick Top wants one of their fighters to take a dive. That’s a problem after he gets knocked out by Mickey, a gypsy that has a mean right hook. Therefore, they get Mickey to join them and take the boxer’s place in the rigged fight. Mickey plays by his own rules, though.

That sounds all confusing, because there is a number of colorful characters including a dog in this movie. But somehow..it works. All the characters are connected in one way or another. There are no “major” actors in this movie besides Brad Pitt, but every actor does their character justice. The way they interact with each other is the great thing about this movie.

Score: 8/10

The Video:

The video is given in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen color. Transfer is decent with minimal distortion. It’s a little dark, but it’s supposed to be. That’s the style of this movie.

The Audio:

The audio included is in English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. No problems here either. No need to turn up the volume or anything like that. However, since it’s a British movie..you may need to turn on the subtitles to understand what some characters are saying with their accents. There are English, French, and Pikey (language spoken by Brad Pitt’s character) subtitles.

The Extras:

Director/Producer Feature Length Commentary
This is Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn talking about the movie as it plays. Personally..I like it when the cast is involved in commentaries, but this one was okay. Nothing special, but interesting nonetheless.

Stealing Stones Feature Option
This is an option as you view the film. In certain scenes, a diamond will pop up onto the screen. You can select that diamond and it will take you to a deleted scene that has to do with the current scene of the movie. You could just watch the deleted scenes as a whole, if you wanted to. But if you feel like doing it all in one shot..then go for it.

The Making of Snatch
Just what the title says. It’s the “behind-the-scenes” feature of the movie. I like these and this one is no exception.

Deleted Scenes with Filmmakers Commentary
Yep..you know what these are. You can watch them all here or watch them in the “Stealing Stones” option. Your choice.

Storyboard to Film Comparisons, a Video Photo Gallery, U.S. TV Spots, Filmographies, and Theatrical Trailers are also included. You should know what all of these are.

Poker Set
This edition comes with some playing cards and Snatch-dealer chip. If you like to collect things, this is pretty cool. But if you don’t and already have playing cards..then what’s the point?

Collectible Movie Scrapbook
Various pictures, production notes, character notes, actor notes and anything else you can think of in a booklet. Again..for the collector as you will have seen most of the information before.

Score: 7/10

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
