Lost – Recap – Episode 2-12

Archive

Previously, on Lost: Eko’s downed plane was filled with heroin, and Eko finds out about it, and thus so does Claire. There goes Claire and Charlie’s budding relationship and Charlie’s connection to Aaron. Eko and Charlie watch the plane burn with Eko’s brother inside, and after Claire calls the whole thing off, Charlie returns his Virgin Mary statue…to his stash of statues.

Flashback: Not sure what the religious picture is, but we get a look at it to open the episode. A kid moves his way down the stairs and we quickly learn that it is Charlie looking for his Christmas presents…turns out that it’s a piano. His mother claims that it’s the only way to save the family, and then the dream starts to get weird as Liam grows up into a full-grown boy and now Charlie is grown as well, looking at his father telling him to get a trade as he butchers fish, meat and then cuts the head off a baby doll. Charlie begins playing his tune, and we go to the island, as the piano is still there on the beach, and Charlie continues to play with the waves crashing around him. He hears the cries of Aaron, however, and believing that he’s in the piano, tries to pop it up. The lid is sealed shut, and as he tries to open it, we hear the whispers. They distract Charlie, as the piano goes crashing into the ocean, taking Aaron with it. Intense.

Charlie wakes up on the beach and runs over to Sun, asking about Claire and Aaron. But they’re okay, as Claire is just letting Aaron have a view of the ocean. Locke joins them, getting a chance to hold the baby even. Charlie looks vengefully jealous and…

LOST.(?)

Claire rocks Aaron in his crib as Charlie swings by with some baby clothes that he made. Charlie tries to make friendly again, but Claire shuts him down at the pass. He apologizes once again about the statue, more importantly it’s contents, and wishes that things could go back to the way they were before. Charlie brings up how Locke’s her friend, sounding incredibly bitter, but Claire just wants some space for right now. Charlie takes his leave…

Flashback: And we get a look at another baby–Karen’s baby…with Liam. Megan is her name, which seems to slightly brother Charlie. Charlie returns to his pimpin’ English flat, still in possession of his piano and looking for Liam. Liam’s on the couch after a round of heroin. Charlie turns to him and tells him to get dressed up and get to the hospital to see his daughter, who was named after Charlie and Liam’s mother. “Now clean yourself up, you’re a soddin’ father now.”

Hurley is talking to Sawyer about the “tailies”–and refers to them by that exact name, which is strange–and brings up Libby. Kate and Sawyer can immediately tell that “Jabba”‘s got a little love connection going on. Hurley drops it, but then Sawyer’s attention is turned to Ana-L and Jack, returning from the jungle for the third time.

Charlie plays his guitar alone on the beach, and begins hearing Aaron’s cries again. Charlie looks out into the distance, finding Aaron’s crib in the ocean, but there’s no one around on the beach, as Charlie goes running into the ocean after Aaron, ducking waves and definitely swimming against the current. Charlie grabs the crib and returns it to the shore, cradling it in his arms, and then looking at Claire and Megan sitting on the beach. “The baby’s in danger, you have to save them.” The line is repeated over and over again, and a plane explodes into a dove, flying past Charlie. Here comes Hurley dressed as Moses, and…

Charlie finally snaps out of it. Charlie has the baby in his hands, and Claire is freaking out over Aaron missing, but Hurley immediately finds him. Charlie is definitely trippin’ balls thanks to the Others, and Claire gives him a nice hard slap.

Sawyer is getting frustrated as Hurley plays blackjack with him, and then notices Libby coming to do laundry. “I’m sure you got a load to drop don’t you, Jethro?” WHOA! That’s TV-MA right there. Hurley is waiting for his moment, but Sawyer thinks that his moment is now…hoss. Sawyer calls Libby over to Hurley, and Hurley gives a wave to Libby. Libby gives Hurley a smile and walks off.

Locke emerges from the hatch in the jungle and Charlie wants to talk to him. Charlie claims that he was sleepwalking, but Locke wants him to get to the point. Charlie was hoping that Locke would put in a good word, but Locke wants to know if he’s using again. Of course, Kate sees a horse and everyone’s seeing Walt, but if Charlie’s seeing something, it must be the drugs, right? Locke notes that he didn’t answer the question. Charlie mentions that Eko and him burned down the plane, all gone, destroyed. “All of them?” All of them. Locke seems to believe him, but mentions that trust is a hard thing to earn back, so Charlie should leave Claire and Aaron alone for awhile.

Flashback: DriveShaft is dressed in goofy robes at their video shoot, as they transform into babies…turns out it’s a commercial for Bubbies diapers, set to “You All Everybody”. Charlie is advised to ditch Liam, but he refuses and is fired from the commercial.

Libby and Hurley are talking laundry, and then Hurley wonders if Hurley knows her from somewhere. Libby wants to try a piece of clothing on, and talks about how Hurley stepped on her foot on the plane. Hurley compliments her clothing, and the love connection continues.

Eko is marking trees in the jungle–marking the ones that he likes. Charlie wonders if Eko gave Charlie one of the statues from the plane, and Eko wonders why he’s asking this. Charlie is losing his mind, sleepwalking and stealing babies from cribs. Charlie mentions that all the dreams involve Aaron in peril, and Eko wonders if the dreams mean anything–what if he does need to save Aaron?

That obviously worries Charlie and he goes over to Claire’s tent, wanting to talk to her, Kate tries to cut him off but Charlie knows how to fix it: baptize Aaron. Locke watches, unhappy, from a distance.

Ana-Lucia is creating a tent in the jungle, and Jack brings a tarp over as Ana-L asks about what happened with the Others in the jungle. Jack mentions that the Others put a gun to Kate’s head to get them to turn back, and Ana-L gets totally inappropriate, asking Jack if he’s hitting that. Jack denies it.

Flashback: Liam dropped Megan, so Karen dropped Liam. Liam’s got nothing now, and asks what they’re going to do. Charlie has been writing, and plays his new song on the piano. While Charlie plays, Liam gets into the song. He’s liking it, and suggests that they do one of their all-nighter sessions again like the good ol’ days. “So, you got any?”

Charlie has some in the jungle, but Locke followed him there to find Charlie’s stash. Locke decides to get rid of the heroin for Charlie, despite Charlie’s attempts to convince Locke that he was going to destroy them anyway. Locke says that Charlie has given up the right to be believed, completely dismissing Charlie’s story that Aaron is in danger.

Back at the beach, Locke and Claire are with the baby again as the baby seems to be good. Claire asks if Aaron and her can stay in the bedroom in the hatch, but the button alarm kinda makes that hard. Locke offers to move his stuff down to the tent for a couple of nights. Claire then asks about baptizing Aaron, mentioning Charlie’s demand that Aaron be baptized. Locke’s understanding is that baptizing is about getting the baby into heaven–“spiritual insurance”. Locke assures that there isn’t any danger, Charlie just feels that he has to save the baby because he can’t save himself.

Deep in the jungle again, Charlie is wandering, gathering grass and sticks together and then lighting a match…which lights a fire. Charlie walks past Sayid and Jack building something, and then Sayid notices the big fire. Everyone goes to the fire except for Claire, who is distracted by the fire, distracted enough so Charlie can take the baby. Oh man.

Flashback: Charlie returns to his flat to find most of the flat cleared out, including the piano. Liam sold it, as he’s going to a rehab clinic in Australia, taking money with him to be with Karen and Megan. Charlie wonders what’s going to happen to HIS family…

…and we return to find the fire almost put out with the exception of some hotspots. Claire is still distracted, however, but the baby cries and Charlie is caught again. Locke notices and chases down to the beach. And here comes everyone, as Eko doesn’t even agree with Charlie about the baptizing being done this way. Locke tries to advance on Charlie, and is able to take the baby peacefully. Once the baby is out of his reach, Locke beats the shit out of him, and everyone is generally disgusted with him.

Charlie is alone on the other side of the beach as Jack arrives, mentioning that Charlie needs stitches for his wound. He goes to take care of him as Charlie admits to starting the fire. Jack knows, but Charlie needs to tell him that he’s not going to do this again, ever. Charlie promises this and also makes sure that Jack knows that he wasn’t using, despite really wanting to.

Eko did not tell Charlie to do what he did, but he does think that the baby has to be baptized. Claire isn’t baptized, you see, and Eko offers to baptize them both.

Locke changes the combination on the gun locker again, and we go back to Eko baptizing both Claire and Aaron. Locke sets the Virgin Mary statues up on the top shelf in the gun locker, and shuts the door behind him.

By the fire, Charlie is alone again, staring into the fire and drawing his hood up over his head and looking as somber as ever.

End episode.
