Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-14

Archive

As you may or may not have heard Invasion is going on hiatus starting March 22nd to make way for the premiere of yet another crime drama. There seems to be some uncertainty as to when the show will be returning (if there are no repeats or preemptions there should still be 3 more episodes left for the season when the show goes on this break) or if it will be returning until next season (if then). I guess we shall have to wait and see.

Speaking of shows which face an uncertain future, the last 4 episodes of Arrested Development are airing on Fox this Friday night. These could be the last 4 episodes of AD we will ever get (and almost certainly the last 4 to air on Fox) so if you’re a fan of the show, be sure to check it out.

Things kick off this week with a shot of Larkin in the shower. In between the shower shots, we get a first person camera shot of someone or thing lurking in the bushes. After Larkin gets out of the shower, she sees something or someone at the back door but it runs off before she can tell what or who it is.

Larkin tells Russ about what she saw and so Russ goes out to investigate. A preliminary scan of the area reveals a whole lot of nothing so everyone goes back inside.

Once inside, Larkin tells Russ that she is worried about the safety of the baby. She thinks it should be somewhere safe and it doesn’t feel very safe. Russ assures her he will find and take of care of whoever was outside.

Meanwhile, the sheriff is being released from the hospital. As his wife wheels him to his car, he talks to some reporters. He tells them that he is going to take his wife’s advice and go home and get some rest; the detective standing beside him will be handling the investigation into the shooting. As soon as Tom gets into his car however, we learn that he is planning to handle things personally.

Tom’s first stop is a survivors meeting at the church. He tells them that he is surprised about his recovery time as he didn’t know his body could heal that quickly. He goes on to say that everyone experiences the transformation differently and that some people have an adverse reaction. He tells everyone that Lewis needs their help and asks anyone for information. When nobody says anything he makes a vague threat about accountability if he learns that someone is harboring Lewis or withholding information.

Once the sheriff goes outside, he is approached by one of the survivors. The man tells Tom that he saw a one-armed guy swimming in a certain lake. He then later saw him washing some clothes as if he had been living there.

Dave and Russ are outside searching the bushes again. Russ is on edge because of Larkin’s unease and takes it on Dave (he blames Dave’s blog for attracting more attention to them). They stumble across a record that belongs to Dave as well as a mysterious footprint. Russ scoops up the ground the footprint was made on and uses the record to transport it.

At the previously identified lake, Tom shows up to investigate. He finds a campsite and quickly ends up with Lewis pointing a gun at him. Lewis seems surprised to see Tom but, when Tom tells him to drop the gun, he seemed embarrassed to be pointing it at Tom and offers it to the sheriff.

Things take a turn for the disturbing when Kira comes out of the shelter wearing not but a towel and greets her father. Kira quickly assures her father that she and Lewis are just friends and she’s just been helping to look after him (which is good because the age difference is rather… eww). Kira knows about Lewis’ new arm and is angry that her dad talked Lewis into cutting it off. Tom counters with his previous assertions that people would think Lewis was a monster if they found out he had a new arm.

Tom tells Kira that Lewis was the one who shot him; Kira tells him that she was talking to Lewis when the shooting occurred so it couldn’t have been him. Lewis takes this opportunity to come into the conversation. He confirms Kira’s story and says that nothing has happened between them.

Tom asks Lewis about the betrayal note he left in the mailbox and Lewis apologizes for it. He asks if Tom believes in God, because Kira wasn’t sure. Tom says he does believe in God and thinks that God saved his life on more than one occasion. He also says he thinks God wanted him to cut off his arm to save Lewis’ life. Lewis apologizes for doubting Tom’s faith but he still isn’t sure about the arm thing.

After returning with the footprint and record, Dave discovers that more of his stuff has gone missing; he is particularly upset about the missing beer.

While Dave is bemoaning his lost stuff, Tom shows up. He wants to talk to Russ so the two go for a drive together in the back of a police car. Soon after Tom starts with the questions, Russ figures out where he is going and tells Tom that he had nothing to do with the shooting.

Tom knows Russ got his information from somewhere and wants to know who that someone was. Russ isn’t willing to name his source but he does tell Tom that his source thinks Tom’s survival is important and he suggests looking for a Mr. Zura as Russ thinks Zura would have reason to want Tom dead.

Dave is once more searching the bushes. He finds an empty beer bottle and a shelter. He looks inside the shelter and finds a lot more of his stuff. His investigation is cut short however, as Rose screams somewhere in the distance.

Rose saw something in front of the house, though she doesn’t know what. Dave has Larkin and the kids lock themselves in a bedroom while he grabs and oar and starts looking around. A sudden noise and some wet footsteps reveal that whatever it is, it is inside the house.

Jesse decides he wants to go help Dave out but Larkin won’t let him.

Dave follows the footsteps into a bedroom. He is looking the mirror when something flies past in the reflection and smashes the window.

Now Jesse is determined to go help Dave, saying his father would want him to, but Larkin tells him no so he stays where he is.

While Dave follows the footsteps outside, Tom and Russ arrive back at Russ’ place. Tom says he hopes the two will have a smoother relationship now that “all their cards are on the table”.

The footsteps lead Dave into the garage. He sees there is something in the corner and he grabs a tranquilizer gun. He shines the flashlight in the corner and we see something disfigured looking. He isn’t able to get a clear shot at whatever it is as it is content to hover in the corner.

Russ walks in, distracting Dave. The creature takes advantage of the opportunity to run and tries to flee. Russ sees it however and tells Dave to shoot it. Dave does just that.

Meanwhile, Kira goes to see Mariel at the hospital. She wants to know what happens in the water. Mariel says that she is still trying to figure that out herself and Kira mentions she knows someone else who came back different and she is wondering why it hasn’t happened to her.

And back to the garage as Dave and Russ are getting closer to the creature. It is still conscious despite the tranquilizer and the two quickly realize it looks an awful lot like Dave.

Larkin turns up at this point and wants to know what it is. Dave speculates that the creature is the result of when he was attacked in the water. Dave and Russ want to treat Creature Dave as it seems to be in really bad shape but Larkin is rather concerned. The creature starts to crawl towards them and everyone backs away, rather uncertain as to what to do. The creature drops something at Larkin’s feet and she picks it up to see a picture of Larkin and Dave as little kids.

Back at the sheriff’s house, Lewis is helping out with the investigation. Lewis comments that there are a lot of Russ’ fingerprints in the house but Tom says he knows Russ did not shoot him. Tom just wanted to find out how much Russ knew and that he was surprised by just how much he did know.

Kira shows up, apparently in need of some clothing. She tells her father about talking to Mariel and that Mariel said Kira should talk to her father. Tom says he doesn’t really have time right now and Kira asks when there is ever time. She then asks to talk to Lewis while she gets her stuff. After some hesitation Tom agrees.

Everyone is tending to Creature Dave now and Russ tells us that his breathing has slowed down quite a bit. Larkin wonders how much the copy of Dave knows and we learn from Dave that the picture he took was Dave’s favorite picture of he and Larkin.

As Kira packs some clothes she and Lewis bond over their treatment as outsiders (Lewis because of his arm and Kira cause of her mom). Kira then tells Lewis she wants to know what happens in the water. She has always felt different and like she never belonged. Now she feels like her parents are in a secret club and they are shutting her out from it.

Lewis starts to suggest Kira talk to Father Scanlon about her problems and Tom comes in. Kira takes her leave of them, making sure to be cold to her father in the process.

Lewis tells Tom what he told Kira about talking to Father Scanlon. He mentions that he always gets guidance from Scanlon. Tom asks if he saw Scanlon since he left Tom’s and Lewis says that it was the first place he went. Tom asks if he mentioned about the arm-cutting thing and Lewis says they did talk about it but he assures Tom it was in a confessional.

Everyone is once again looking after Creature Dave. There is some talk of taking him to a hospital but Russ says that it is too late to do anything for him. Larkin starts to go check on the kids but then pulls Russ aside. She tells Russ that she hopes their baby will be beautiful and that it will never fear something just because it is different.

At the church Father Scanlon is busying praying; he’s talking about amending his ways and paying a penance. Tom interrupts the prayer by placing his hand on the Father’s shoulder.

Tom tells Scanlon he knows that the Father shot him. He asks Scanlon why he did what he did. Scanlon tells Tom he abused the ‘privledge of God’s grace’ or some such nonsense. He was outraged to learn that Tom misled them all.

Tom tells Scanlon that he is not going to jail. Rather he is going to be going to a camp down on the Keys run by one Mr. Zura. The camp is for people who have lost their way and he feels that it would do the father good.

The episode ends with a quick shot of Dave and Russ dumping a bag (presumably containing Creature Dave) and then a shot of Kira staring out on a lake at night, slowly inching her way towards the water.

I must say I really liked this week’s episode. The whole hybrid Dave thing opens up a whole bunch of interesting possibilities. Dave and Russ speculated that the hybrid was deformed because it didn’t get enough genetic material from Dave.

One has to wonder if Russ had saved Dave just a few seconds later, would we have ended up with two Daves? From this point on we can’t assume that just because there’s a hybrid version of someone, the original isn’t still alive. Presumably it would be unlikely for the human to survive (as escaping a creature on your own when it is latched on to you seems tough) so there aren’t going to be a whole bunch of doubles but we can no longer assume the human is dead (we have seen Tom and Mariel’s bodies but none of the other hybrids’ bodies have turned up, not to mention what may happen in the future).

I was also pleasantly surprised at the result of Tom’s investigations. I wasn’t completely sold on Zura being the shooter but I certainly did not expect it to be Father Scanlon. And Zura is apparently working with (for?) Tom, which only increases the speculation as to just what is going on in the Florida Keys. Based on the previews from next week, Christine and Derek will be turning up so perhaps will get a bit fuller picture then.

If I had to make a complaint about this week’s show, it would have to be the deluge of searching in the first half of the episode. Between Dave’s constant trips to the bushes, and Tom’s investigation it felt a little overboard. But it lead to some very interesting results so it can be overlooked.
