Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet II – (Episode 11)

Cue the music..cue the entrances..cue the cool water scenes where everyone comes up through the water to the surface and they are dry as a bone! Those were some of the veterans and the rookies. Now the rest are already on the beach and they fight it out…

We open up to Timmy, Mark, Brad, and David talking about the losing streak for the “veterans”. Timmy has never been in a losing position before on these challenges. Mark says that any guy they lose makes their team weaker. But if the “rookies” lose a guy..it will make their team stronger for some reason. Brad says that Beth could be cut loose from team to help the team. You think! Timmy has an idea to solve this.

Timmy: “Here’s the deal..one of us has to bang Beth!”

They all have a big laugh at that as we head to Beth talking to Kina. Beth says her team doesn’t think she is an asset to the “veterans”. So why help her team when the money then? Stupid and proves my point exactly.

Cara and Susie discuss how Kina doesn’t talk to them anymore. Again..I thought they made up?! Women! Susie says that Jodi, Kina, Ibis, and Jillian are an unit on their team. That leaves Cara and Susie out. That lets them bond more, which upsets the other four women. Kina says that Cara and Susie are the ones that isolate themselves from the team, though. Not the other way around.

Clue time! “Don’t let your team down!” Everyone does some stretching to get ready. Timmy is dressed like a damn redneck and he says that his team is sick of losing. It’s a “Women’s Gauntlet Day”, by the way.

Challenge time! It is called “Pull Me”! There is a platform suspended 20 feet above the water. Team members will try to hold up other team members on this platform by using only a rope. Each team gets a turn and then the roles are reversed. The team members that were on the platform switch with the ones holding the rope. Whichever team can hold up their members the longest will win this challenge! The winning girl captain will win a year’s supply of movie tickets from Fandango! Awesome! Julie makes it clear..again..that the “veterans” are sick of losing!

Team strategy discussion time! “Veterans” are going to mix up guys and girls on each team to balance out the weight. The “rookies” look strictly at weight and strength and have members of the team that are physically the same on opposite teams to balance things out.

The first heat involves the “rookies”. MJ, Alton, Jeremy, Jodi, Susie, and Jillian hold the rope for the other team members. MJ holds down the “anchor” position. Alton thinks his team has this won. They are stronger and lighter than the “veterans”. MJ says this challenge is all about how you position yourself on the rope. They appear to be struggling as we head head off, though!

Commercial time!

We come back and more struggling. Ibis says that Alton and MJ are in trouble. Jodi is screaming. She thinks this looks really hard. Mark offers his insight. In a tug-of-war type of thing, you don’t rely on your hands. You lock the rope around your body. We will see Mark, when you get out there. The “rookies” finally lose it and drop their team into the water. Their time was 11 minutes and 11 seconds. Alton said they did the best they could, but he doesn’t know if it was enough for them to win.

Heat #2 is the “veterans” and Mark, David, Beth, Robin, and Katie will be holding the rope for their team members. Breathing is the key. And Dr. Mark again has some more advice.

Mark: “It’s not a pulling competition..it’s a resistance competition! We’re not pulling at all..we’re resisting the fall. Use your own body weight, plant your ass on the ground, form like a little unit, and just resist!”

Everyone seems to be doing okay with this strategy, except for Beth. She comments that “her hands are numb and she is holding on for dear life.” 30 minutes have gone by and that means that the “anchor” position, which is Mark, must let go to see how long they can go without him. Derrick yells for the rest of the team to “stay strong”. They start to slip a little bit and they lose it at 33 minutes and 1 second!

The third heat is the “rookies” again and this time Randy, Landon, Jamie, Ibis, Kina, and Cara all hold the rope for the other half of the team! Cara says she will give it her all and pull that rope. Kina says “if they can do it..we can do it.” They last 30 minutes and Randy, the “anchor”, has to let go. Once Randy lets go, the ropes slides out really fast and out of Landon’s hands. He tries to get it back, but it’s over at 30 minutes and 10 seconds! Cara doesn’t know if it’s good enough to win, and it’s not likely..since everyone knows the “winning” strategy now.

The last heat has Timmy, Brad, Derrick, Aneesa, and Julie holding the rope for the “veterans”. Dr. Mark offers advice from the platform again. Timmy says the key is to “control yourself” and the “veterans” easily past the total time of the “rookies”. But they hang on tight..just for the hell of it to stick it to the other team. They last 27 minutes and 2 seconds. The “veterans” finally win again with a total time of 1 hour and 3 seconds to 41 minutes and 21 seconds! The score is now $60,000 to $40,000..in favor of the “rookies”. Beth thinks that she has proven to be an important part of this team, eventhough she didn’t do anything to save the team herself . That was Dr. Mark. She is not that smart. That proved nothing! It was a “team” effort!

“Gauntlet Deliberation” time! Susie says it’s a sad day as she or Cara will be going into the gauntlet. No doubt about that. Kina talks to everyone and says it sucks to be in this position. She is picking someone who would make a fine captain IF that person beats her. She chooses Cara! No surprise.

TJ comes in to spin the wheel and it lands on..come on..it can’t be..something different..no way..not possible..could it be..something else..oh..wait..my bad..it HAS to be “Captain’s Choice”! That’s the only thing on that dang wheel! At least Kina changes things up by selecting “Name That Coconut”! Kina and Cara both knew that they were going to be in the gauntlet together..so no real shock on either side.

Gauntlet Time! This has to do with trivia questions and history from past seasons of ‘The Real World’ and ‘Road Rules’. TJ reads a question..they have to find the answer written on the coconuts. They can fight over the “right” coconut until they reach the “safe zone.” First one to five..wins! We get some words before it starts. Cara wants to prove Kina wrong, while Kina believes that Cara doesn’t care about the team. She only cares about herself!

Commercial time!

We are about ready to start. Randy is nervous. It could go either way and he could lose Kina.

Question #1: Who did Julie mudwrestle in ‘The Real World: New Orleans’?

Answer #1: Jamie (Got it!)

Kina and Cara scuffle about and seem to want to wrestle more than anything. Kina gets a coconut and Cara goes after it, but Kina is “safe”. It’s the right one! She is up 1-0! Cara says it is already violent!

Question #2: Who replaced Puck when he was kicked off of ‘The Real World’ house?

Answer #2: Jo (Too easy!)

Cara and Kina fight. Cara gets a coconut and Kina takes her down to the sand, but Cara is in the “safe zone”. We get “cat fighting” noises from the peanut gallery and a worried look on Randy’s face. Cara brought back the coconut that said “Jodi”..however, which is ALL wrong! Kina can take her time now. She finds it and is up 2-0!

Question #3: Who is the first person ever voted off of ‘Road Rules’?

I’m not sure on this one and neither are Cara and Kina. Susie tells them to “think about it” and says that watching Cara in the gauntlet is painful for her. Kina picks up a gauntlet and dives for the “safe zone”! It’s the right one!

Answer #3: Jisela

Question #4: This cast member was not allowed to return to college after their participation in ‘The Real World’.

Answer #4: Julie (Another easy one!)

A small scuffle, but nothing like the first two. Kina gets the coconut again and it’s the right one! 4-0 for Kina! Pack your bags Cara!

Question #5: Who has a matching tattoo with Landon?

Not sure on this one. Cara tries to make a move on one coconut, but Kina shoves her. Cara just gives her an evil look. They are about to fight! Everyone is loving it. Cara grabs a coconut and Kina tries to take her down. Kina rips and claws at Cara’s shirt. Julie yells out..”who wants to stay more?!” And Kina yells back…”I do..bitch!” to Cara. She steals the coconut from Cara and dives for safety. She gets it and it’s the right one!

Answer #5: MJ

Kina wins! Cara is out! Randy is happy. They hug. Kina says it feels good to come back to her team and her boyfriend. She is not leaving this island.

Cara is saying goodbye to Susie. Kina comes in and tells her that she did do a good job..no lie. Cara tells Kina that she was a horrible team captain by excluding her out of the team at times. Cara tells her that “you know nothing about me!” Kina really only came in her to tell Cara that she did a good job and not hear what Cara has to say about her. So they get into a little fight and Kina leaves. Kina is glad Cara is gone and that the “rookies” will win easily now! Cara calls Kina “immature”.

Cara and Susie say their final goodbyes. They will be friends for life after this game! BYE!

And we are out until next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
