Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-15

Archive

I’m running a little late this week so I’ll just get to the recapping.

This week Invasion starts out with Derek and Christina meeting up on a beach. Christina wants to leave the camp and head back home; Derek thinks they should just stay at the camp until they are told they are ready to go back. Christina is not satisfied with this; she is tired of always doing what everyone else tells her. Christina asks Derek what their purpose is but Derek doesn’t know (Derek never really was a sharp cookie, so no surprise here).

As Christina is ranting, some guy named Stevie comes up and starts yelling at them because they aren’t obeying the rules. When they protest, Stevie says they aren’t his rules, they are Zura’s. The discussion is cut short when Christina hits him in the back of the head with something. Christina decides she is going to leave the island and Derek follows.

Back in Florida City, Kira confronts Lewis. Apparently he hasn’t been returning her phone calls and she wants to know why he’s avoiding her. She tells him that she was at the water and she may go back again. Kira wants to know what happens in the water. She wants to go through the same experience everyone else went through so she will belong. She asks Lewis to go with her. When Lewis refuses Kira yells that he’s not really her friend.

Meanwhile, Russell is watching the water from his vantage point in the treehouse. Rose interrupts him, asking if he is looking for the monsters. Russ tells her there are no monsters and Rose says she isn’t scared anyway, as long as they stay in the water.

Russ takes Rose inside so he can put her to bed. As she’s preparing to go to sleep, Rose starts asking questions about her mommy. Rose liked it better when they stayed with both Russ and Mariel; she misses her mother. Russ doesn’t really know what to tell her.

Once Rose is in bed, Russ talks to Dave and Larkin. He feels bad for keeping the truth from the kids. Dave and Larkin aren’t really sure what Russ could tell them as the truth would be awfully rough on the kids..

Larkin suggests that Mariel perform some tests on herself, with Russ’s help, so they can better understand what Mariel is and whether Mariel is likely to be a threat to the kids.

The next morning, Kira is moping around her room when Tom comes in. She asks her father if he told Lewis to stay away from her. She follows that up with a question about Derek.

Tom says that it was for her own good that he wanted to keep her away from Derek. When Kira says she wants to be changed like everyone else, Tom says she is perfect the way she is. Kira disagrees with this assessment however and runs out of the house.

Kira next turns up back at the edge of the swamp. She wades into the water and begins doing a back float. A few seconds later she is grabbed, not by one of the creatures, but by Derek and Christina and in a more playful sort of way.

The sheriff is checking one of the bays for Kira, but he is not having any luck locating her.

Kira, meanwhile, is walking along with Derek and Christina. Christina is very excited to learn that Kira is the sheriff’s daughter. After learning Kira has a car, Christina suggests they all go somewhere together. Derek objects out of fear of Kira’s father but Christina thinks that having Kira around will keep them safe in the event they have a run-in with the sheriff.

Mariel turns up at the ranger station, having decided to take Russ up on his offer to help run some tests. She already knows her blood is much different as she tested some when she donated to Tom. Mariel thinks that the real reason Russ wants to run these tests is to find out if she is likely to hurt the kids. Mariel is somewhat nervous herself about what they may find, but feels she has to know.

Back with Kira and her new friends, they’ve decided to go shopping. Christina is a fan of shoplifting it would seem. Kira is pretty shocked about this but, thanks to the power of peer pressure, she is pretty easily convinced to go along with it and even picks out an outfit for herself. We then get a shot of an ominous looking security camera recording the entire affair.

Tom and Lewis are still trying to track down Kira but still have no idea where she might be. Lewis feels he may be partly responsible because of the way he reacted to her the night before. He mentions that Kira wants to be like her father and Tom says that she can’t be like them, even though he wishes she could. Lewis goes on to speculate that much of Kira’s behavior may stem from a feeling that she doesn’t really know her father as he has never talked to her about what happened to him in the water.

The conversation between Lewis and Tom is interrupted when they receive a phone call. It seems that someone has spotted Kira. Lewis and Tom are on their way to meet with said individual.

Christina approaches a rather nice looking house and tells Kira she forget her key. She claims that this is a friend’s place and that she stays there all the time. She breaks the window, explaining her friend is out of town right now and won’t mind since they’ll pay to replace the window..

Once inside Christina suggests it is time for some underage drinking (well underage for Derek and Kira anyway, I don’t think we’ve ever learned Christina’s age). While Christina pours some drinks, Kira goes to try on one of her new outfits.

Once Kira is gone, Derek asks if it is really her friend’s house. Of course, it isn’t. The house actuals belongs to an ex-boss whom she does not remember fondly. Derek then asks about her baby for some reason. Christina doesn’t know where it is, nor does she care. To her way of thinking, once Christina got her new body, she no longer had any connection or responsibility for the child.

Christina’s old boss returns home and is quite dismayed to find his window broken. He is even less happy to find Christina in his house and gets rather unpleasant with her. Just as Kira comes out of the bathroom to show everyone one her new dress, Christina stabs and kills her former employer.

Tom and Lewis meet with the owner of the store where Kira did her shoplifting. The owner shows him a tape of the shoplifting (which also stars Derek and Christina, a fact not missed by either Tom or Lewis) and agrees to give it to Tom. The security guard wanted to press charges but the owner says she is just concerned about Kira. Tom thanks her for assistance and they leave the store.

Once they are back in the squad car, Tom tells Lewis about his work camp for maladjusted hybrids and says that he sent Derek there a few months ago. Lewis wants to know if he sent Christina as well; Tom says he did. Lewis is unhappy about this as he knows of her crimes. Tom says that if she went through the prison system she would be eventually be discovered and then everyone would think all the hybrids were just like her.

Back at the dead guy’s house, Christina is still planning on having some drinks. Derek thinks they should leave, but Christina says they can just dump the body in the pool. Kira tries to make a break for it, but she’s no match for Christina and her pointy knife. Derek says that there’s no need to keep Kira with them but Christina wants to use her as a bargaining chip in case the sheriff get in their way.

While they are arguing Christina suddenly starts holding her stomach, grimacing in pain. She tells Derek to make sure Kira doesn’t leave and to check her for a cell phone while she rushes into the bathroom.

Once Christina is in the bathroom she lifts her shirt up to reveal all sorts of weird black lines moving outwards along her stomach.

Back to Russ and Mariel now as the blood tests have been completed. There are elevated levels of white blood cells and some other things, even when compared to the reading Mariel took a few weeks ago. She admits she has been feeling a pressure on her abdomen for a while now and she’s worried she is getting sick. Mariel says she needs to do an MRI but they need to go to the hospital for that.

Lewis and Tom are still hunting for Kira. Tom thinks that Christina is likely to turn up at her former employer’s house as the hybrids always return to their birthplace and she apparently walked to his house after her rebirth.

Kira and Derek are talking while Christina is still in the bathroom. Kira thinks that her dad was right to warn her away from Derek and that he did it for her own protection. When Derek says he isn’t happy about what Christina did, Kira asks why he doesn’t leave and he isn’t sure himself. Derek says he feels a powerful connection with Christina, similar to the one Tom feels for Mariel; that’s why he feels he has to protect Christina. Kira tries to use that against him, asking if he thinks that Christina would really try to protect him.

Taking advantage of Derek’s hesitation, Kira tries to leave again. Unfortunately for Kira, Christina has recovered and comes out of the bathroom just in time to stop her.

Christina decides she is going to take Kira for a little walk on the beach and they’ll conduct a little science experiment. Kira is finally going to get to find out what happens in the water, so says Christina.

Mariel and Russ, meanwhile, have made their way inside the hospital and are now in one of the MRI rooms. Mariel gives Russ a quick explanation of how to operate the machine as she changes and then enters the machine.

Tom and Lewis turn up at the dead guy’s house. After finding the body they do a search of the house but find nothing of note. Tom suspects that Christina has gone down the beach, to the place of her birth, and they decide to head that way themselves.

Once they get the MRI results they see that Mariel has some kind of growth in her abdomen. Mariel fears it is cancerous but Russ points out that with her changed body, they can’t even be sure it is a tumor. Mariel says they will need to do an ultrasound and a needle biopsy.

Along the beach, Kira is getting further threats from Christina. As they reach the spot of Christina’s birth Derek assures her that it doesn’t hurt and that it is a lot better than the alternatives (looking towards the knife Christina is still carrying). Christina tells Kira that she’ll be able to tell her daddy they are the same once she gets back.

Kira tells Christina that even if she is changed in the water, Kira is determined not to end up like her. Kira then walks in to the water and a light swims up to her. She quickly pulled under the water as Derek and Christina look on.

Mariel is back in her office and running an ultrasound on herself while Russ extracts some tissue samples with a needle. Mariel says that if the results show that she is sick she wants Russ to leave with Rose and Jesse to ensure something like this doesn’t happen to them. Russ says that if Mariel is sick the kids will want to be with her, and so will he.

Tom and Lewis find Christina and Derek, still standing on the beach where Kira disappeared. Tom demands to know where his daughter is and gets rather forceful with Christina when she tries to lie to him. Derek says that she is still in the water, but this does little to appease Tom’s mood.

Fortunately for Christina, Lewis finds Kira so Tom lets her go and goes to check on his daughter. Kira is unconscious but also fully clothed and displaying numerous puncture wounds.

Christina, meanwhile, is in pain and tells Derek she thinks she is pregnant when he asks her what is wrong.

And back at the hospital, Mariel and Russ examine the tissue sample. It turns out there’s nothing cancerous but rather the growth contains eggs. Mariel speculates that the growth is actually a giant ovary.

Another good episode this week with some intriguing developments. Tom’s comment about how he wishes Kira could be changed, coupled with the fact Kira was injured and clothed when recovered on the beach suggests that she was rejected by the creature for some reason (I’m sure that’ll do wonders for her feeling of not belonging).

The only other person we know of that the creatures wouldn’t take was Healy, and that was because he was sick. Is Kira sick in some way as well? Or are there certain people who just cannot be duplicated? Or perhaps Kira was already replaced at some point before the series ever began. In some ways she does seem to be acting much like the hybrids Healy was talking about who were unable to adapt to their new lives.

I did have a problem with Kira’s naivety this week though. She’s not a stupid person and no matter how naive she was I find it hard to believe she would have bought Christina’s excuses about having lost her key when they broke into the house. Not to mention how she failed to catch on to the fact that Christina was telling Derek she would be useful as a hostage (Christina was pretty direct about it, she just didn’t use the word hostage).

Christina also seemed to act somewhat illogically. She kept Kira around specifically to protect herself from Tom in case he caught up with her. And then she goes and does something to only further Tom’s wrath towards her. In this case though, Christina has proven to be pretty mentally unstable so it is quite possible that Kira’s repeated escape attempts infuriated her to the point where she was no longer thinking logically and she decided to do something crazy instead.

Next week ABC is showing the 2 hour pilot of Lost for some reason (is there something large and ratings grabbing on that evening?) so there’s no new episode next week. I haven’t been able to confirm for sure but it looks like we won’t be getting another episode again until March 8th. And then a couple weeks after that, it’s hiatus time. I can’t imagine that these frequent breaks are good for ratings but then again, I’m not a TV executive.
