OVW TV Review for February 18, 2006

Archive

OVW’s latest weekly television show was taped in front of a big turn away crowd last Wednesday, February 15. The crowd was larger than the number of people who showed up for the Matt Cappotelli vs Johnny Jeter title match last year. The tv show aired on the WB in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday night, February 18.

The tv show opened with the last few minutes of Matt Cappotelli’s speech from last week’s tv show. Early candidate for Moment of the Year and Promo of the Year.

Dean Hill and Al Snow opened the show from the OVW announcers desk, and announced the fact the OVW Title Tournament was starting right away with four big matches tonight.

(1) BRENT ALBRIGHT PINNED ELIJAH BURKE IN A FIRST ROUND MATCH.

Elijah came out, and wanted to address the events of last week. Just as Elijah was about to talk about Cappotelli, Albright attacked from behind with the heavy leather strap. Albright viciously attacked Elijah, and was choking him with the strap when the referees came out and pulled Albright off. Referee Goose Mahoney did the baseball umpire move and signaled for Albright to leave. Goose was throwing Albright out! Albright will be out of the tournament! But Elijah wants to fight Albright! Senior Official Robert Briscko rules that the match should happen, and we’re underway with Albright vs Elijah Burke! This was an excellent match, maybe Elijah’s best ever in OVW. Albright’s heel work is excellent. Elijah was selling the neck, as Albright “injured” Elijah’s neck with the heavy leather strap. Albright pinned Elijah with an Exploder Suplex. They aired a replay of the suplex, and it looked devastating.

Backstage, we are welcomed to the Spanish Version of OVW Television by “El Presidente” Osama Rodrigues Alejandro, who tells us he was in New York City meeting with financial backers of his revolution, and he happened to run into a very important member of the board of directors of WWE. Along with this board member was the WWE representative for the OVW Title Tournament. Osama says, “there he is!” and the camera swings around, but misses the mystery person. Osama says, “you missed him! But I didn’t!” and then tell us he knows how to keep a secret. Great promo.

Back from the break, we find WWE Diva Maria interviewing the Spirit Squad. Maria mentions that if both Jeter and Doane win tonight they will be opponents in the semi-finals next week. Doane then states he is the youngest WWE Superstar ever at 19 years old. Jeter talks about being Cappotelli’s former partner and greatest rival, and the camera zooms in tight on Jeter’s face. Jeter is turning babyface! He dedicates the tournament to. Wait. He can’t say it. He’s holding back tears. It’s so emotional. Here it comes.

The Spirit Squad! Everyone in the audience was sure Jeter was going to dedicate the tournament to Cappotelli. Jeter’s smug smile when he dedicated his win to the Spirit Squad was classic.

(2) CHRIS CAGE PINNED JOHNNY JETER IN A FIRST ROUND MATCH.

While my buddy thought Punk vs Doane was the best match of the night, this one stole the show for me. Great back and forth action. Jeter came out to the ring by himself, Cage brought his tag team title belt with him. Jeter set Cage up for the superkick, but Cage ducked, kicked out Jeter’s knee, which brought Jeter down to one knee, and Cage hit a sweeeeeeeeet DDT on Jeter when Jeter was still on one knee. Super sweeeeeet. 1-2-3, and Cage advances to the semi-finals for next week’s show. There is a really cool pic of the DDT, and of Jeter being spiked into the canvas, on www.ovwrestling.com.

In the back, “El Presidente” Osama Rodrigues Alejandro is interviewing The Highlanders. This has to be seen to be believed. First, Osama asks The Highlanders if they know who the WWE representative is. They say no. He says, “I do,” and just smiles. Hysterical. So one of the Highlanders bites a chunch out of Osama’s cigar. Yeeeech. Osama then asks “who is going to win the tournament?” One Highlander yells out, “Chris Cage,” and they go on about Cage’s leather pants reminds them of their prom date, who was a sheep. She was also a first cousin. Osama says “your prom date was a cheeep?” All of a sudden, Shelly Martinez is heard screaming down the hallway. She’s pounding on Paul Birchall’s door, and pleads for more “Pirate Love.” Birchall opens the door, and says, “you’re just not my type of wench!” and then slams the door in her face. Shelly is beside herself, and chases away the camera man. She then pins Osama against the wall, screaming about Birchall, and Osama, not knowing what to say, hysterically blurts out, “I’m going to be Dictator of Los Kentuckos!”

(3) MIKE “THE MIZ” MIZANIN PINNED RENE DUPREE IN A FIRST ROUND MATCH.

We got the intros, and took a break. About 5 minutes of the match aired. It was pretty good, but slowest paced match of the show. Dupree is just missing something now. Miz hit his Mizard of Oz (slop drop) for the pin.

In the back, Maria is interviewing OVW TV Champion Aaron “The Idol” Stevens and Beth Phoenix. Maria asks Idol for his pick in the tournament, but Shelly comes bursting into the locker room screaming about Birchall. Shelly, in her greatest psycho bitch from Hell tantrum, is rambling about breaking into Birchall’s voicemail to listen to all the messages from other women, cracking his email codes, spying on him when he goes to the gym. Shelly is the best psycho in the business. She chases Maria out of the dressing room. In the hallway, Maria says Shelly is in need of help. But wait! Maria is joined by Paul Heyman’s favorite character, Osama Rodrigues Alejandro, who asks Maria if she knows who is the WWE representative for the tournament. Great teases throughout the show. Maria doesn’t know, and engages in a conversation with Osama that is Maria’s funniest promo to date. Really good stuff on the whole show.

(4) CM PUNK PINNED KEN DOANE, BUT BRENT ALBRIGHT ATTACKED, AND MR KENNEDY RETURNED!

The entire Spirit Squad is ringside with Doane. Punk hits the ring and we’re underway. This was a really good match. There’s a spot in the middle, which lead to a commercial break, where Punk is chasing Doane around the ring, and Mike Mondo used the Spirit Squad’s trampoline to deliver an awesome flying clothesline onto Punk. Back from the commercial break, the action picked up. The Spirit Squad all grab a limb on the outside and throw Punk up the air and he crashes down with a loud thud. Punk and Doane exchanged some stiffs blows, and then Punk caught Doane in the Anaconda Vise. Doane is about to tap when the Spirit Squad get up on the ring apron. The referee admonishes them, but it’s a distraction because Brent Albright runs in with his leather strap. But Punk avoids the swing and nails Albright with a kick to the back of the head, sending Albright flying out of the ring. Doane gets to his feet, but the ref is still tied up, so Punk blatantly kicks Doane right in the Spirits, and uses a small package. The ref turns around and counts to 3. But the moment Punk wins, he’s jumped by the Spirit Squad and also by Albright. Referees come out, but they’re attacked by the Spirit Squad. This brings out the locker room, and a giant pull apart takes place. As the entire OVW locker room empties out, and mass chaos rules the Davis Arena, Mr. Kennedy’s music hits, and he comes out and stands on the announce desk!

Mr. Kennedy is the WWE Representative for the OVW Title Tournament!

He says he thinks it’s insane that one week after Matt Cappotelli’s historic speech, we’d end the show by pulling Albright and Punk apart. So, therefore, “Let Them Fight!”

A huge brawl breaks out, not just between Punk vs Albright, but everyone on the roster fighting. As things get, well, I hate to say it, “extreme,” we cut back to Mr. Kennedy, who asks what will happen next week when the semi-finals take place right in front of the WWE representative, Mr. Kennedy.

Kennedy.

Top to bottom, Paul Heyman’s best OVW show to date. The semi-finals take place this Wednesday at the Davis Arena, 4400 Sheperdsville Road, Louisville Kentucky. The semis are Punk vs Chris Cage, and Brent Albright vs The Miz. Interesting mix. Finals are either Punk vs Albright, or Cage vs Miz (they’re tag team champions). Directions to the event are available at www.ovwrestling.com.
