A Case of the Mondays

Archive

I know I’ve said this before and not delivered, but it’s going to be a short one this week. I’m tired, it’s been a long weekend, and there were practically no new episodes of the television shows I watch.

Before I get into the shows I watched this week, let me rant about something. Does anybody else find those Felicity Huffman Dove commercials annoying? There’s just something that really irks me about a commercial having a preface and epilogue. Especially when the preface and epilogue try to make the product a lot deeper than it actually is. I don’t know why, but I always get annoyed when that commercial comes on.

Rant over.

24:

Not much to say about this episode other than that I liked it. However, there is something about this season that I’ve really enjoyed, namely the complete contrast between Palmer and Logan. I’ve noted this ad nauseum before, notably with his reactions and handling to these crisis situations. On that note, how about him frighteningly refusing to talk to the terrorist, and then demanding that it is on speakerphone, so that Mike can hear everything and ultimately tell him what to do.

Anyway, another great contrast is the dynamic relationship between the President and First Lady. With Palmer and Sherry, Palmer was ethical and made all of the toughest decision with a moral stance. Sherry was ambitious and willing to get her hands dirty for their personal benefit. Now, with Logan and Martha, Martha is the one with the moral stance, while Logan is the one willing to do something underhanded for his personal benefit (out of cowardice). It’s an interesting contrast.

I continue to enjoy this season, and it shouldn’t be long before the ever-so-lovely Elisha Cuthbert (who looks AMAZING in the Weezer video) returns. And no, I won’t be making the oh-so-clever mountain lion joke.

SURVIVOR:

A really great episode all around, probably the best all season. It’s very interesting that everybody so openly recognizes Terry as the leader of his tribe, to the extent that it sure is good that he found the immunity idol, because he most definitely would have gotten booted off once the two sides merge.

I find it interesting that the tribe would choose Ruth Marie over Sally. Of course there is a great deal we haven’t seen, but I wonder what exactly Sally has done to earn such a reputation for wanting to jump ship once the merge happens. To me, it’s just seemed like Ruth Marie has been such a weak link in that tribe, and considering their all around losing streak, you can’t afford to give up stronger players.

It’s also interesting how the four man alliance broke up this episode. It’s always been Terry and Dan and Austen and Nick. This week, we saw it break up into more Terry and Austin, and Dan and Nick. I’m most definitely wondering if this turn of events will put a wedge in the alliance between Dan and Terry, as Dan looked none too pleased about Terry’s decision.

Anyway, Terry having the immunity idol is a really great tool. Austen had a great point that once they make it to the merge, Terry has a huge target on his back. I think once the merge happens, Terry should open up to his tribe and tell them that he has the immunity idol, and then they essential decide who they want to vote off, even if they’re in the minority. If they make it to the merge with a 6 to 4 disadvantage, and the opposing side wants Terry off, but the four of them vote for, say, Bruce…Bruce gets eliminated. This adds a lot of intrigue to the game.

I’m not sure where I stand on the whole storing the wood in the latrine thing. On one hand, it is a responsible way to use the latrine….but on the other hand, you have a latrine with a toilet seat and toilet paper…and you want to use it to STORE WOOD??? Also, what was with Danielle saying that Bobby doesn’t act like a gentleman? Honey, why on earth are you signing up for something like Survivor and expecting the males to be treating you like a gentleman? Please. That whole tribe is completely imploding.

Also, the both of them shot themselves in the foot. What was with them sleeping while all of the others worked around camp? Trust me, nobody likes sleep more than me, but even I realize how stupid that is.

LOST:

Yeah, I know, no new episode last week, but Entertainment Weekly had an interesting article on the show this past week. One of their columnists gave his theory on all of the mysteries of the show, including the island, the Dharma Initiative, the hatch, the numbers, and the answer to the show. Please note that these are in no way spoilers. They are simply predictions and theories.

Regarding the island, they believe that the island is haunted, due to the actions of the Dharma Initiative. They also believe that, intentionally or not, the Dharma Initiative pulled loose psychic powers from one of its test subjects, with disastrous results. Like most people, they believe that the hatch is a human Skinner box, basically studying the behavior of the subjects based on fear and paranoia. However, they believe that someone was put in the hatch and had a psychic break of epic proportions.

And what about the numbers? Well, according to the people at EW, it has to do with the retired numbers of the New York Yankees. Oh, and they were encoded with devilish psychic powers after the psychic breakdown. All this talk of psychic powers makes one wonder, who is this powerful psychic? Well, EW gives their theory on that as well…

It’s Aaron. Each survivor on Flight 815 was on the plane because Aaron summoned them, because he has a yet-undetermined use for each and every one of them. He also needed the body of a yet unborn baby. Enter Claire. EW also believes that The Others are actually Aaron’s followers, and that’s why they attempted to kidnap Claire. When that failed, they had to kidnap Walt because HIS psychic ability could see through their plan.

So, what do I think of all of this? Well, I’m not so sure that I’m a believer in a lot of what they’re suggesting. First off, the stuff I do agree with:

I, too, believe that the Dharma Initiative and the hatch are part of a human experiment. I’m not sure if I believe this whole psychic break theory, though. Or at least not in the way they theorize it happened.

I’m not sure if I buy that the island is haunted. Actually, my buddy Beer Pong Champ Frank offered an interesting idea: The island is moving. He brought up the fact that geographically speaking, it’s unlikely that the type of plane that came from Nigeria would have traveled that far. This would also explain how polar bears made it on the island. I find that to be an interesting idea.

I believe that he numbers play a significant role in how each person boarded the plane. I’ve mentioned before that the survivors of the flight may actually be integral pieces of a pre-planned Utopian society. The numbers may have been a conveyance of ensuring that those people would get onto the flight.

The stuff with Aaron is interesting. Really interesting. However, I’m not sure it all adds up. Why would The Others attack and kill the tail end people? Why wouldn’t they make any other attempts at kidnapping the baby? What I think is more interesting is their obvious desire to kidnap all children. They snatched Alex, they took the kids from the tail end, they captured Claire to get her baby, and they kidnapped Walt. What’s even more interesting is that, when she was captured, they kept Claire alive (while they tried to kill Charlie). They’ve also explicitly stated that Walt and the children from the tail end are alive. And all indications lead us to believe that Alex is still alive also.

I suppose one could theorize that they’re kidnapping the children to see if they’re the reincarnated Aaron, but I believe that they’re just expanding. Nevertheless, this week looks like a really interesting episode.

Anyway, that’s all for this week. Oh, and happy birthday to my buddy Clelia.

Until next week, Case Closed.
