The Ultimate Marvel Handbook #2 (#157)

Hello everyone. We’re back for another round of Q/a and of course all around fun. I don’t know where Daron is. I think he’s running late this week.

How do you figure I’m running late?

Oh hi Daron. I see you just made it in time. I’ll bet the readers are happy to see you. Why don’t we start this baby up.

Of course they’re happy to see me, what would they ever do without me? And yeah sure, it looks like this is going to be a long one, so we better get to it.

Hey Ultimate Marvel Guys,

Hey Roger

Just a thought on the Powers aspect of some heroes, as far as super strength goes. The strength of Thor, Hercules, Namor, and probably others I can’t think of is not a “power,” it is a normal characterisic, like hair and eye color. It doesn’t come from an accident like the Hulk or Spider Man’s powers or moving to a new galaxy and having the yellow sun alter your physical attributes. It’s natural because of their heritage (Thor and Herc are gods, Namor is a Human/Mermaid hybrid and a mutant.) I don’t think it is unfair to include them in a discussion of fighters. BTW, out of Thor and Hercules, Herc is the better hand-to-hand fighter as witnessed in the recent Thor: Blood Oath series.

No arguement that Herc and Thor aren’t great fighters. Just not including them into the tournament to keep it fair. If I include a Thor or Herc then Hulk and She-Hulk need to get in and Thing too. That’s a different fighting scale in many ways. You know the super strong all fighting each other.

Not to nitpick, but technically Namor is a mutant and most of his powers derive from being a mutant. As to the other two, I understand what you’re saying, but because they are “gods” their very existence is “supernatural” in nature and puts them in a higher bracket than normal humans.

Obviously, I’m having trouble with the powers/no powers aspect. I feel that if you are born with it, even mutants even though they develop their abilities later, it’s not really a power. Wolverine’s agility, senses, healing factor, and bone claws are not powers. Adamantium laced bones are part of an experiment. I would put that in a class with accidental powers like the Hulk and Fantastic Four. Take away Spider Man’s powers, and he is not even a regular Joe. His fighting style is completely based on his powers. No training. At least Captain America has had extensive training, with no super powers. Please help me out.

I can explain the no power rule here. What I’m thinking more about with the powers is for a character like Sue Storm who could become invisible in a fight. Not natural senses and the like. So Wolverine can keep his senses.

Same goes for Spidey and Cap keeping their powers in ways. I’m more thinking of keeping it fair. Wolverine can fight without using the claws. Spider-Man would have to fight without the webbing.

Anyone with weapons go weaponless. Sorry but it keeps it fair.

Not to be rude, but how do you figure shooting laser beams from your eyes ISN’T a power? Mutants reference their abilities as “powers” all the time. Hell, watch any of the X movies and you’ll hear people asking each other what their powers are. Anything that isn’t “natural” is a power.

“Why do I think that was Bendis screwing up? He’s had a habit of making up his own continuity. I don’t think Fury is that old. Sorry.”

Whaaaaaaaaat? Have you forgotten the Infinity Formula?

From link

“As the years went by, Nick Fury’s WWII origins became a problem, as unlike Captain America, Fury didn’t spend decades in hibernation, and should therefore be showing some signs of age. The solution was provided in a 1976 issue of MARVEL SPOTLIGHT by Jim Starlin and Howard Chaykin, in which it was revealed that during World War II, Fury was critically wounded in a French mine field, and was taken to a nearby surgeon to save his life. However, the surgeon also saw Fury’s injuries as an opportunity to test out a chemical process he’d been experimenting with, which he called “the Infinity Formula.”

“As it turns out, with regular booster shots of the serum, Fury would perpetually retain his youth and vigor. However, if he misses his annual dose of the serum, he can expect to age decades overnight, and die not long after that.”

If I recall correctly, Fury eventually stopped taking the serum, but it was discovered that his body had begun to continue to produce the Infinity Formula naturally.

Nope I didn’t forget about it. I just don’t recall any facts that he fought in World War I until that statement. There’s known issues with him in WWII and the like. But I didn’t forget the formula. It keeps him looking. Until the Bendis thing in New Avengers we had no idea Nick fought in a World War I battle I can recall.

Also, re: DC comic references by Marvel characters, remember Cosmic Spidey?

Crook: “Who are you?”
Spidey: “I’m Bat- *ahem* SPIDER-Man!”

HAHAHAHAHA That’s a good one. As I said it’s been done a few times I just can’t remember them all. I bet many others will be emailed in.

Hey Jim. 1st off I love the new format and logo!! Given I got a sneak peek from Daron earlier this week and gave it a big thumbs up then! Anyway on to my votes just so I can see this debate ended. I don’t know if you want comments on why so I just cut and pasted my picks. I may throw in a brief why I picked though.

Cool I’m glad you like the logo and everything. I want to hear what everyone else thinks about it all too. Same thing goes for Daron no Doubt. I cut your votes and add them to the tournament.

Thanks for the email, Soak. And yeah, all feedback concerning the new look of the column is most welcome.

Hey Jim!

Congradulations on the relaunch of the Marvel Handbook. One thing I noticed missing from your profile on Nightwatch. Nightwatch made his final appearance in Spider-Man Unlimited #14 when he was forced to compete in a superhuman gladiator battle called “The Great Game.” He was then killed by a pair of villians named Polestar and El Toro Negro. Polestar magnetically disrupted Nightwatch’s combo and E.T.N then shot him. Toro (who was working as an agent of Justin Hammer) then promptly killed his own partner

Nice additional information. Very good of you to add it. Thank you. I totally forgot about it.

Anyone else notice how similar Toro there looks to the original version of Bishop”¦

Gents,

To add more fuel to the firey “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of… Thor” discussion:

Walt Simonson paraphrased the requirement as “Are you honorable, and if Ragnarok comes a-calling, will you be willing to fight till the very end for Asgard?” Simonson gave us an Odin whose major concern was that Ragnarok would eventually come, and he had to prepare for it. Hence, in case Thor falls, the hammer will still be usable.

Kurt Busiek also added the Superman clause or “In case of dire emergency, the requirements can be eased so that someone who wouldn’t normally be able to use it may.”

Thanks. Helps a lot with this information. Kurt added the new one to use for Superman I suppose but I’m done with the argument here. Bet it gets attention though from others.

Can I ask you where that quote came from? I’d like to see where Kurt actually said that?

Also, to add to your list of wielders:
Future Imperfect Rick Jones (from Peter David’s final run on Captain
Marvel)

Nice. I didn’t even think of that one. Very good addition to the list

Also, your Tounament of Mortals neglected to include Echo, the deaf
Taskmaster clone from Daredevil and the New Avengers.

I did add Echo. She’s under her New Avengers codename. RONIN. She’s the top spot in the Defenders region.

And if you didn’t yet know that Echo was Ronin”¦you do now :)

Stavros emails

How about the Purple man, Zebediah Killgrave. His arc in Alias made it pretty clear he knew he was a character in Jessica’s book, even though they tried to play it off as mere gimmickry in Thunderbolts.

I suppose he should count. You are right he’s shown the ability before. So he does make the list. Thanks for the reminder.

In the future, you should probably reference what the hell you’re talking about. It took me a minute to remember the list of characters who knew they were comic characters from a week or so ago. I’m just saying”¦

1) Were you serious on the Winter Soldier vs Red Hood thing? Cause if so, I’m sorry – it should be a walkover to the Marvel guy in this case. They were both trained by the best in their respective universes (Bats & Cap), but Bucky’s spent years as a Black Ops killing machine. Jason’s gonna die. Again.

Wait, I didn’t mention that. Daron did. But if he was serious I would agree with you. Winter Soldier would take the match quite easy. I mean Bucky is a killing machine as you said. He’d just kill Jason Todd all over again.

I don’t understand the emphatic nature of your statement/question. All I did was suggest the match, I didn’t comment one way or the other on who would win.

3) And finally, big wins for the Hulk? How about the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing? Ben & Hulkie must have fought about 20 times, and has the Thing ever won? I don’t think so.

I think Thing won a match once. But if he did it was likely luck or a fluke. Thing is strong but Hulk in his words is “The Strongest there is.” So Hulk beats the Thing in most matches. So Hulk has big wins over Thing.

Yes”¦but who wins the ugly contest?

Joe emails

Hey guys.

Hey Joe

My roommate is the biggest Captain America fan, so i asked him his thought on the whole Captain America debate. He had me read The Adventures of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty mini series, which is basically a year one story. It says that they trained the hell out of Cap before they even gave him the serum to see if his body could take it. It said he was 18 in 1941 when he went into the program. So basically they say he was thawed out about 10 years ago regardless of how long our time is. It’s always 10 years ago. So he had about 8 or so years of experience fighting before he was put on ice. But keep in mind for the most part he pretty much fought WW2 in hand to hand combat. Thats saying a lot. Plus, every time you see Cap when he’s not fighting. He seems to usually be training himself or somebody else. So I guess it can be argued that during the war he was mostly self-taught. And did pretty damn good. So most of his formal training probably came after he was found. But he trains now as much as Iron Fist or any regular martial arts fighter. And there was a period he lost his enhancement and still kicked ass. So no, he didnt have the most training before as other guys. But he did have a lot. And he keeps it up as much as them and still has hard war experience that they don’t. Which is why experience is so important in determining a fighter. Yeah he has augmentaion but not Thor or Hercules powers where he just has to wail away trading punches till he overpowers somebody. He still had to avoid bullets and bombs and regular people can hurt him. I would still say he is the 2nd best fighter after Logan. So i guess i have to ask was the question: Who has the most formal hand to hand training? or WHo is the best hand to hand fighter when it comes to skill? I have talked to some people in martial arts who are great when they are training and sparring. But they have admitted in a real fight they tend to forget there stuff and trade punches. To me thats a bad martial artist if you can’t apply it in a real situation. And Cap can apply it better than most.

First off to quote our “fearless leader” that’s some fuzzy math. Last time I checked WWII ended in 1945 (and that was the Japanese part – the war in Europe was already over at that point). America entered the war in early 1942, which means there is only a roughly 3-year window that Cap could have been involved with the war.

So now they obviously didn’t give him too much training after he got the serum, otherwise he’s have missed the whole war. They couldn’t have possibly trained him “that” long before the war since they were training him for the war based on events that were occurring. And if his “training” wasn’t longer than say 10 years or so I wouldn’t equate his “training” to anything like a formally trained martial artist who trains his whole life.

Lastly, to his “fighting” in the war, yeah he was fighting hand-to-hand, but with a shield, which he uses both defensively and offensively. Again, take that away, and you’ve got a guy with fighting experience, but NOT the type of trainging that Wolvie, Panther, DD, Iron Fist or Shang-Chi have”¦and that’s really been my point.

Formal Hand to hand training? Hmm alright let’s see.

Iron Fist
Daredevil
Stick
Elektra
Nick Fury
Cat
Shang-Chi
Night Thrasher
Ronin
Shadowcat
Wolverine
Revanche

A few others are trained as well. A good amount of trained fighters in martial arts really. I listed a good amount here. I could list more. I bet others will chime in too.

Finally. Somebody asked about my reference to Black Panther keeping Wolverine from killing him. In the original Contest of Champions limited series they fought. Wolverine was sort of half assed trying to kill him. Panther kept him from pulling it off. Thing interjected and told wolverine it was just a game and he didnt have to kill Panther. As per that time, Wolverine responded “I don’t play games”. Both characters have come a long way since than though. In the Enemy of the State2 from the Black Panther series Wolverine only helped Panther on Storm’s request. They didn’t fight. And the Enemy of the State in Wolverine’s title they didn’t cross paths at all. As far as I know the only time they fought was in that original Contest of Champions. Thanks

Damn how did I forget it was Contest of Champions? I did though. I thought it was the Black Panther Enemy of State issues. (not Wolverine related as stated.) I forgot that book I don’t know why. But you’re right. Thanks for correcting me.

Also in answer to the question if there are any other examples of a Sentry “Superman” in-joke, well Hudlen’s recent run on MK Spider-man started with a whole Superman in joke. It was quite funny actually… Especially “Pa Kent’s” reaction to the government agents.

Also good example. I loved that story to. That was a very good one.

A faceless name posted

Here is one though, how many young girl sidekicks has Wolvie had? he always seems to have one hanging around his century-plus hairy-behind.

I would assume you mean a character like Jubilee here. Not a lover in Silver Fox or Viper. So let’s go through Wolverine’s Pun’kins

Shadowcat (Kitty Pryde): the first in reality.

Jubilee (Jubilation Lee): She was always hanging around him

Elsee Dee: True Albert is with her now but her and Wolvie got along in time.

Amiko: His own adopted daughter.

X-23: His clone. She seems to be hanging around him a lot.

Rachel Summers: In reality she grew up cared for by Logan.

Among the lovers that showed up more to hang around:

Elektra
Lynx
Psylocke
Native
Yukio

I mean I can go on with lovers that show up occasionally He’s been with a lot of women. But that’s a different question.

Nic emails

Hello Jim/Daron

Hey Nic

Love the article. Keep up the great work, I have a question for ya… if you’re brave enough to answer it!!

I know a lot of people hate these “Who would win in a fight” questions… but my buddy and I had a long discussion over this and we can’t come to a conclusion.

Who would win… Batman vs. Dr Doom. 2 out of 3 falls. First battle in Gotham, second in Latveria, and third battle in a neutral steel cage. Both men get 24 hours to recover/prepare for the next battle.

I’m partial to Dr Doom, my friend is partial to Batman… I figure I’d ask the experts and see what their opinion on it was… who do you think would win… and who do you think SHOULD win.

I’d take Doom is the fight. I’m just going to say that Doom can create special armor for the match and use all his tricks and magic to win. He would win 2-1. I’ll give one fight to Batman even to be fair. Because Bats would find some way to beat Doom atleast once in the matches. He’s smart enough and with the prep time can fight anyone.

Now I’m betting that Bat fans and some other will argue in favor of the Bat here so I’m expecting emails. You know this always gets me in trouble.

Hmmm, this is interesting. I’d say if Bats manages to survive the first fight with Doom (which he’d lose), he’d probably be able to find a way to defeat him for the second fight. After that I’d think it would be a draw, with the possible exception of him winning because he’s a “good guy.”

Cory emails

What’s good fellas, Cory again, here goes nothing:

Hey Cory

1. DC vs. Marvel the villains, hmmmmm how bout:

1a> Sabretooth vs. Killer Croc

Hmmm I think Lizard Vs Croc would be cooler. But I’ll take Creed. More experience and well he was Weapon X.

Yup I give this one to Creed as well.

1b> Jigsaw vs. Two-Face

Interesting contest. Two-Face would flip a coin to decide death or life. By then Jigsaw would’ve shot him though.

I’m going to give this one to Two-Face only because he’s fought Bats so much that he’s probably gotten good enough to beat some C-list Marvel villain.

1c> Lex Luthor vs. Kingpin

Luthor. The fat man has no chance. Even business wise he has no chance.

Agreed!

1d> Joker vs. Red Skull

Hmmmmm two guys with some scary looks. I’ll take Joker if Skull don’t have a Cosmic Cube.

I think Skull would realize that Joker is just too f*ing psychotic and would try and convince him to go get a drink”¦

1e> Typhoid Mary vs. Cheshire

Ok I don’t know Cheshire that well. So I have to go with Typhoid

Well Cheshire did wipe out an entire island, but she had a nuke that time”¦in a hand-to-hand fight, I think I’d give this one to Typhoid.

1f> Sinestro vs. Mandarin

Sinestro. The GL rings are stronger then Mandarin’s I believe.

Agreed again!

Another cool fight would be the pic I included above. I’d take Lobo in that fight.

Me too”¦

2. What are the top 5 most villainous things Dr. Doom has ever done? Didn’t he like sell his mother’s soul to the Devil? DAMN that’s evil!

Oh this might be impossible. This bastard is so evil he’s done too much to discuss. I’ll do 5 off the top of my head.

1. There was the time he offered Reed Richards’ son Franklin to Mephisto in exchange for his mother
2. He once possessed Valeria Richards
3. He once killed the Thing
4. He once almost killed Reed and himself if not for Hyperstorm
5. Tried to take over the House of M by sending the House of Magnus into the Negative Zone for good
6. He mind-wiped his ward Kristoff
7. Locked the X-Men up in various torture chambers designed to push them beyond their physical limits
8. When he stole Surfer’s powers
9. He took over Latveria
10. He took over the Heroes Reborn Earth after the heroes left.

Ok that’s 10 but who cares. This man is evil.

3. As for the Recently Returned From The Dead Grudge Match??? I’m leading more towards the Winter Solider (he’s got that Cable look going for him)…but between him and J. Todd, what evil deeds has these two been doing upon their return?

Well Winter Soldier was a trained killer for the many years he’s been MIA. He also might have killed Jack Monroe Nomad. He kidnapped Sharon Carter. Plus it seems he killed Wolverine’s wife and son.

Jason Todd I have no clue about. I don’t read Batman. Maybe Daron knows

You know I really don’t know what he’s been up to. I haven’t read Batman since Judd Winick took it over”¦

4. About my Hulk theory from last week, about him losing Main event matches aka the WWE Big Show Theory, he did gain alot of redemption for his assault on Onslaught, since then has he had any other claims to fame?

Well he was a Horseman of Apocalypse, beat most of his normal rogues gallery among others. Nothing to big though

5. Can I get a bio or more intel on “The Cat”, the martial artist guy I last saw in Cable/Deadpool?

Cat IV
Real Name: Shen Kuel
Occupation: Freelance espionage operative
Identity: Known to intelligence agencies and in the Hong Kong underworld
Legal Status: Presumably a citizen of the British protectorate of Hong Kong
Other Aliases: None
Place of Birth: Unrevealed, presumably on Hong Kong
Marital Status: Presumed single
Known Relatives: Unnamed brother (deceased)
Group Affiliation: Leader of his own band of operatives, sometimes ally of Shang-Chi
Base of Operations: Hong Kong

Height: 5 ft. 9 in.
Weight: 155 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black
Unusual Feature: Shen Kuei has a cat-shaped tattoo on his chest.
Strength Level: Shen Kuei possesses the normal human strength of a man of his age, height, and builds who engages in intensive regular exercise.
Known Superhuman Powers: None
Other Abilities: An extraordinary hand-to-hand combatant, Shen Kuei is one of the greatest living masters of the Oriental martial arts, whose skill rivals that of Shang-Chi.

6. If Captain America was 18, now 84, years old when he likely took the serum, why does he now look 30ish in New Avengers, etc?

Well Cap did age AFTER he was unfrozen. He has been able to age over the years and did fight in the war for a while before being put on ice. So he looks like he’s in his 30’s

If you go by the time line that the current Marvel U is only 10 years old, then yeah Cap should be in his early 30’s.

7. Personally my favorite Wolverine vs. Sabretooth battle is Wolverine #90 (right before Age of Apocalypse), what are yours?

OHHHHHHH I loved that one. I think that was my favorite too. I think I should list a top 5 here:

1. Wolverine # 90 Claws right into Creed’s skull
2. Wolverine # 145 for the adamantium
3. Uncanny X-Men # 212 one of the first fights. Still one of the best
4. Wolverine (v1) # 10 We learn more about their past
5. Uncanny X-Men # 222 Another good one. Logan breaks Creed’s hand

8. Last week I asked about the Taskmaster losing to Batman in JLA/Avengers, and you responded that the writer made the decision on that, and that JLA/Avengers made the DCU look so much better than Marvel in so many ways……WHAT WAYS?? i.e. examples???

1. Well first of all they made DC look better in most of the fights.
2. They made DC’s characters look so much more powerful.
3. Made Galactus look like a bitch.
4. Made it that the Infinity Gauntlet was mostly useless because Darkseid couldn’t use it.
5. Made magic stronger in DC comics.
6. Taskmaster beaten.
7. Aquaman looked like he could basicly take over Marvel Atlantis easy if he wanted.
8. Marvel Earth is smaller then Dc’s ?????

Just some of them for you.

Remember though that the readers voted for those fights, you can’t blame the writers. And as a whole I’d say that the DCU characters are in general more powerful than the those in the Marvel U. I’m not saying one is better than the other, just that DC deals with more of the “gods amongst man” stories whereas Marvel focuses more on “flawed hero” stories.

9. About possible Mjolnir lifters, when did Beast try to pick it up? Back during the ole Avenger days? Colossus? Hmm, wouldn’t that metal+electricity factor prove a lil disasterous, or no?

Colossus has a good heart. Might be a problem with the metal thing as you said.

Why do I recall Beast trying it with the Avengers or something funny. You know Beast back in Avengers day was a jokester so I think I recall him trying something with the hammer. I could be wrong. Maybe it was a dream, lol.

Ummm, I don’t see what Colossus’ armor has to do with anything. First off, we’re talking about magic lightning, and secondly anyone coming in contact would be fried. I’ve never seen Thor accidently shoot himself with the lightning, don’t see why Pete would”¦

10. I smell a new debate brewing so here goes: POTENTIAL COMIC BOOK MOVIE STARS! In Ultimates #4, a discussion occurs where the characters talk about which actors should play them. The results are:

Nick Fury: Samuel L. Jackson
Captain America: Brad Pitt
Iron Man: Johnny Depp
Giant-Man: Matthew McConaughey
The Wasp: Lucy Liu (The Wasp scorned this suggestion, saying that Ms Liu had only been suggested because she was the only Asian actress known to most of her teammates)
Dr. Bruce Banner: Steve Buscemi

So….1. Capt. America-Brad Pitt(star quality) or Casper Van Dien (from Starship Troopers; peep the guy’s jawline and dye his hair blond…perfect)
2. Wasp- Lucy Lui or Kelly Monaco (sorry I take a strong liking to her)
3. Iron Man- Tom Cruise??? or Colin Farrell.
4. Black Panther- Wesley Snipes or Michael Jai White (always thought of for 90% of black male heroes)
5. Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver, Black Widow, etc. Since we already discussed Thor. Lemme know your opinions and what you guys think.

Hmm this could be interesting. We’re doing Ultimates or Avengers? Because I might cast different for each.

I’ll do Avengers I suppose. Maybe it will work better for me.

Cap: Mark Wahlberg
Wasp: Kelly Monaco
Iron Man: Johnny Depp
Black Panther: Wesley Snipes
Hawkeye: Jake Gylenhal
Scarlet Witch: Eliza Dushku
Quicksilver: Bradd Pitt
Black Widow: Angelina Jolie
Thor: Edge
Henry Pym: Mathew Modine
Nick Fury: Ultimates is one thing but Marvel he’s white so I hire Mark Harmon
Huk: Eric Bana (hey he worked fine)

I’m gonna have to wait till next week give mine”¦running short on time here.

Same time next week, till then..thanks &….Vote Wolverine!!!!

See you next week Cory
