American Idol – Recap – Episode 5-18

Archive

Time to sub for Kevin again this week. However, I get to watch the guys do their thing. It won’t be pretty as well..guys aren’t pretty to me. But I think a guy will win it this year, so lets see if I’m right. Ace needs to rebound quickly to make my ultimate prediction come true, but he is in no danger of NOT making the top 12, so he has time.

I watched the girls last night and Paris, Lisa, Mandisa, and Katherine are locks to me to make it into the finals. Kellie will probably make it as well. Kinick is out for sure. So that leaves a tossup between Ayla and Melissa for the final spot. I’m going to lean towards Melissa. So Ayla and Kinick will be going home. In reality, Kellie SHOULD be gone and Ayla in based on singing, but it’s not always about singing as you know.

But back to tonight. Lets get to it. This is American Idol!!

American Idol 5 – Episode 18 (“Guys Night #3”)

Credits…

Ryan Seacrest welcomes us to the show, and then introduces the guys to everyone.

No time to talk to the judges tonight! We got work to do!

Our first performer is Gedeon McKinney. When he is not singing, he paints. And he painted a picture of a record and it’s round as “music makes the world go around!” See how that works. He is singing “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge originally and later done by Michael Bolton. Something a little different and I liked his version better than Bolton’s, but that’s not saying much.

Rating: 6.5/10

Randy – A little shaky at first. Big note at the end saved it for him. Nice way to start off the show
Paula – Unique singer. Throwback to old soul singers. True showman. Needed in competition.
Simon – Quite the odd person. Good, but a bit “over-the-top”. He’s interesting, though.

Gedeon picked the song, because he has had lots of women and he knows how to love them. That includes his mom and grandmother and all of his other women! He’s a gigolo..spending lots of dough…err..anyways.

Kevin will be serious and Chris will be seething after the…

Next is Chris Daughtry. He used to style his hair like Ryan Seacrest, but he started losing more up front than he could grow..so he shaved it all off! He is singing a favorite of mine. “Broken” by Seether! This should be good. A little shaky at first for me. But he finished up strong.

Rating: 7.5/10

Randy – He’s a fan. Like Gedeon..he knows who he is. Loved it. Rock On!
Paula – Amazing artist. Stay true to who he is. Fantastic. Already a star.
Simon – Wasn’t as impressed. A little indulgent. A little boring.

He picked the song, because it was a little softer but still brought out who he is. He should be in the Final 12, because he has been doing this since the age of 17 and it’s time to show America what he’s got. Easily into the finals!

Kevin Covais is here. He likes Kanye West. Sometimes he even does a little rapping. Um..yeah. He is singing “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” by Don McLean. Yeah..I don’t like him at all. Too whiny for me. But I suppose it was okay. Nothing special, though.

Rating: 5/10

Randy – Didn’t like the song, but he can sing anything. He’s in the dog pound! Woof!
Paula – Nothing but love for him. Sincere performance.
Simon – He’s got the granny vote tonight. Very juvenile. Like he was 11. Exactly!

Ryan had a dream about Simon. That he gave constructive criticism. But it didn’t come true. And they talk about Ryan dreaming of Simon and all of that. And that’s about all was said. So lets move on.

Bucky is going country, but of course, after the…

We come back and Ryan talks to Taylor. He met Christopher Cross the other day. So that was exciting to him. And Taylor performs every night back at home.

Bucky Covington has a twin brother named Rocky. He’s a good singer, but Bucky looks better. Right. He’s singing “Wave on Wave” by Pat Green. Maybe TOO country for me. I don’t think it was good enough to advance him to the finals. Just average.

Rating: 5.5/10

Randy – Great song for him, but not the greatest to show off his voice. Rocky country..”Bucky Country” thing. Liked it.
Paula – He’s raw. He sings and does a good job.
Simon – It was okay. Could have heard it in a bar.

Ryan brings up Bucky’s twin brother, Rocky and they goof around for a bit.

Will will be doing some James Taylor after the…

We’re back and Will Makar is learning Japanese. And he gives a shout out to his eleven year old girl following in Japanese! He is singing James Taylor’s “How Sweet It Is”. It was okay. Hopefully..he did enough to beat out Kevin and Bucky.

Rating: 6/10

Randy – Not good to him. Great song, but bad performance.
Paula – Disagrees, of course. She’s a fan. Yay! Great job.
Simon – Agrees with Randy. Completely average at best.

Paula thinks Will has a distinct voice and deserves to be in the Final 12. He is loved by everyone.

Taylor and Elliot are up next after the…

It’s time for Taylor Hicks. He used to be the Easter Bunny at the mall. HAHAHA! He is singing “Taking It To the Streets” by The Doobie Brothers or Michael McDonald. It was cool. A good song for him. He even does a little dance as well. Great performance. Crowd was into it big time!

Rating: 8/10

Randy – Good song choice for him. Even the dancing was good.
Paula – She is going to copy his footwork. Blown away!
Simon – He could kill the music video industry by himself! Loved the song and he stood out. Best performance so far.

Ryan and Taylor talk about the dancing and what will be his trademark move.

Elliot Yamin is almost deaf in his right ear! He is singing “Heaven” by Bryan Adams originally and later remade by DJ Sammy in the last few years. Interesting choice. Not bad. But didn’t blow me away. Nothing wrong with it, though.

Rating: 6.5/10

Randy – Looks forward to him singing every week. Wants to make a record with him right now. It was hott!
Paula – Amazing. And she’s on drugs!
Simon – Felt a disconnect between him and the song. Appeared uncomfortable up there. Not his best.

Ryan says two out of three isn’t bad. And wishes him luck. That’s it!

One last performance after the…

Last one and it’s Ace Young! He had to do a lot of odd jobs when he got to Hollywood. He has become a good handyman. He is singing “Butterflies” by Michael Jackson. I thought he did a great job. I don’t like that kind of singing, but it’s that kind of song. So he was right on it.

Rating: 7.5/10

Randy – Thought it was risky at first, but it was hott! Nice falsetto.
Paula – Better than the original. Incredible job!
Simon – He made it work. But parts of the vocal were not great. The middle was off, but he made it work.

Nothing said from Ryan or Ace really. Just the usual voting numbers.

Ryan wraps things up with the recap, and we’re out!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
