Imogen Heap – Speak For Yourself Review

Official Imogen Heap Website

The Inside Pulse:
Having gained exposure as one half of Frou Frou, Imogen Heap takes the leap with her second solo album, Speak For Yourself. While the album hasn’t seen as much exposure as other talented artists whom have broken away from groups (i.e. Gwen Stefani, Scott Stapp, etc…), she was able to gain quite the following after the song “Goodnight And Go” was featured on an episode of the O.C. Let’s see if she can catapult into the same stratosphere as the other aforementioned artists.

Positives:
A very slickly produced album which she did herself, this album flows very nicely from track to track. The production also brings out her voice very well, which can be angelic and soothing, depending on which song you happen to be listening to.

Another plus with this disc is the fact that every track has it’s own distinct vibe and ebb, which keeps the listener interested right until the last track.

Negatives:
Unfortunately, people won’t give her the time of day. She released this album at possibly the worst time with the influx of female vocalists such as Gwen Stefani, K.T. Tunstall, Kelly Clarkson and so on.

Cross-breed:
Think a touch more mellow Portishead with an Esthero vibe.

Reason to buy:
If you want something that is very cookie cutter and that everyone else will be listening to, this album isn’t for you. While it may not become one of the greatest albums of all time, or even a good selling album, this is certainly worthy of being in your collection.
