The Ultimate Marvel Handbook #3 (#158)

Hello everyone and welcome to another addition of the Handbook. I’m Jim Trabold and my partner in crime here is, Daron. Say hello, Daron.

Make me”¦and keep your hand away from my @$$!

We have a lot ahead as usual. I’m looking forward to this one. So how about we start.

Well, it’s either that or go back to sleep”¦

William emails,

Jim and Daron,

In regards to my prior email about what constitutes “worthy” as a criteria for wielding Thor’s hammer, Daron asked:

“Can I ask you where that quote came from? I’d like to see where Kurt actually said that?”

You caught me. It’s not a direct quote from Busiek, but my own interpretation of the events of JLA/Avengers. You’ll recall, after the final showdown in which Superman wields Mjolnir, when the fighting is done

Superman finds he can no longer lift Mjolnir. Thor’s exact quote:

“My father is stern, Superman, but not stupid. A very few worthies have been allowed to overcome the spell, in desperate hours. But know this. Perhaps it was but briefly… but it was in good hands.”

Good hands, but not necessarily worthy ones. Either Superman was only briefly worthy to wield the hammer due to the circumstances at the time, or Superman was *never* worthy to wield Mjolnir and Odin bent the rules for him.

This ones all yours Daron

See this whole thing to me is copout. Busiek was trying to appease fans of both heroes and both companies. And as everyone well knows the next writer that comes along will have him lift or not as they see fit”¦

To change the subject to one tangentially related to your powers/no powers dilemma, there are are a number of characters in the Marvel universe that possess superhuman talent or skill and are yet still considered “baseline human.”

– Photographic Reflexes (Taskmaster, Echo/Ronin)

– Accuracy with ranged weapons (Bullseye, Hawkeye, Boomerang) All three characters have demonstrated the ability to throw even non-aerodynamic items (paperclips, pens, keys) with deadly range and precision.

– Mastery of Angles/Geometry (Eightball) Cyclops has this ability as a “secondary mutation,” but the Sleepwalker villain Eightball has a similar level of virtuosity and is a baseline human. Also, Captain America has this ability with his shield: Does he get it from practice, or from the Super-Soldier Serum?

Actually Cap gets his with practice for the most part. Let’s use something said by Fury in Ultimate Avengers: “This Shield in Captain America’s hand is a weapon” So it could be thanks to the formula.

What other non-super “powers” exist in the Marvel U?

Hmmmm good question.
Intelligence is not a power but Marvel has some of the biggest brains in comics. We’re talking about people like Reed, Tony, Pete, Hank and a few others.

Gadgetry: it’s not a power but without it there’s no Iron Man or Doctor Doom
Also there’s a lot of other things that are more skills then powers. So those would count. I’m betting I can find a few powers other then the ones we just listed that would count.

Stephan emails

Hey Jim,

Hey Stephan

I dig the UMHB, but you may have officially crossed the line.

This week you discussed which ACTORs should play the Avengers. I don’t have a problem with most of them but then I noticed, hidden (and I submit that you did it insidiously), that Edge should play Thor.

I now hate you. Edge should be dragged out into the street and beaten repeatedly with a thin flexible reed of bamboo until I think of something worse for him. He’s a personality sink. He removes any interest anyone might have in a segment. He made a Foley segment suck. That should be all that needs be said of him.

Besides, he’s not an actor. Sure, he was in that Highlander thing, but so was Chris Lambert.

How about Vladimir Kulich? He played Buliwyf in 13th Warrior. I kept pissing my friend off by calling him Thor until he finally made me check IMBD to find out his real name.

Anyway, great stuff. I’ll keep reading, even though you are now my personal Gambit.

Hahaha, what a great phrase to have coined!

And I agree, Vlad would be a sweet Thor.

Wow isn’t that just a little to far. Why hate me? I mean it was mostly opinion with the actor thing. He does have the look. Not saying he can act the part though. I mean really I could find better I suppose. But wow to call me your Gambit. That’s harsh

SeeYa

P.S. Bats vs. Doom? Bats wins because as far as any comic writers are concerned, Bats is better than chocolate cake, period.

That I can’t argue with. It might be the key reason the Bat wins. But if Doom’s smart he makes him think he beat him by beating a Doom Bot.

Marvel Dudes,

Roger

I know that mutants and others refer to their gifts as “powers”. I’m just saying that if you are born that way, it is natural, and not a power. The Hulk’s strength (hell, the Hulk) came from an accident, Thor was born with his. Hulk’s is a power, Thor’s is not. Just my opinion.

Well besides the fact that I disagree on principle, remember also that mutants aren’t born with their “powers” they usually don’t show up until they’re in their teens. And also, many of Tho’s powers aren’t inherent either, and he instead gets them from the hammer. Hell if you read Son of Asgard, it shows a very “weak” Thor who is for all intents and purposes dead due to an arrow piercing his heart. I’d say Tho’s powers probably didn’t show till much later in life as well. But as I said before, “inherent” or not in my book a power is a power.

“I think Thing won a match once. But if he did it was likely luck or a fluke. Thing is strong but Hulk in his words is “The Strongest there is.” So Hulk beats the Thing in most matches. So Hulk has big wins over Thing.”

“Yes…but who wins the ugly contest?”

Todd McFarlane’s Gray Hulk wins. He is one ugly mofo. The art’s great, and the ugliness fit’s the mood of the Hulk at the time, but goddamn that’s ugly. The madder Hulk gets, the uglier Hulk gets

I admit McFarlane’s Hulk was an ugly bastard. Damn he was ugly. Thing has had some bad looks too. Both have been ugly at times. But I must admit Hulk might win the ugly thing too.

Jim emails

OK, I finally have to join the “fight” Taskmaster over Deathstroke? Doesn’t Deathstroke have enhanced mental and physical reactions while Taskmaster can mimic anything he has seen? Wouldn’t Taskmaster be limited by his own reaction time? I mean, he can make the moves but can make them fast enough to take on someone with enhanced reaction times. Deathstroke is a villain who can anticipate and incapacitate “the fastest man alive”.

Ah but he could use abilities on Deathstroke of say Batman. If I recall right Bats likely has beaten Deathstroke. At least once? So if Bats can beat him then Taskmaster can find a way to do it.

Agreed. Taskmaster should have just as good a chance of beating Deathstroke as any other “normal” hand-to-hand fighter, if not a better chance due to his photographic reflexes.

And don’t even get me started that scene where Deathstroke takes on the whole JLA and wins. That just may be one of the worst moments in comics in the last 10 years”¦in my humble opinion.

Lorenzo emailed

Hey guys. Like the new format and like the comic reviews section, since I can gauge everyone’s taste for the same book at times.

Hey Lorenzo. Thanks. Great to hear you like the new look

Indeed, glad you’re enjoying the new reviews as well. I think they’ve been very well received.

To spare you all, I won’t go into any who can lift Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s fighting ability, the debate on fighting ability, since everyone has said their piece and have made their points.

Thank you.

I just wanted to do a cheap plug on everyone’s favorite mercenary fighter, the Taskmaster. For fun, I designed a revamp on his look. We are all familiar with his classic look, and I did do a search on the Udon look, only to shudder and convulse upon witnessing it. So I basically tweaked the classic look and did a more current Taskmaster. See what you guys think.

I like it. Very nice art. Are you certain your not a pro? I mean that’s some nice art and it’s way better then the Udon look

As for question, what do you guys feel about the upcoming Civil War for Marvel and for Annihilation? I’m curious on both, but I’ll probably look into Annihilation more, since it won’t demand as many books or tie-ins.

Annihilation I already have said to another reader will be worth the money. It’s the cosmic storyline and the fact that it will help bring the cosmic line back into light. I really am looking forward to this.

From what I’m reading about Civil War and seeing from notes, interviews, sneak peeks and even the trailer, I do like it. I hope it’s worth the hype.

At this point, I’m going to check out Civil War, but already passed on Annihilation. I was actually looking forward to the return of a cosmic line at Marvel, but I thought the art was so horrendous on the first book that it just ruined my taste for the whole story. I’ve also heard nothing good from the people I’ve talked to that actually read it”¦ Hopefully Civil War will measure up.

Always a pleasure and thanks for your time.

Welcome and see you next time

Cory emails

Cory here…..What’s happening fellas? Well here we go:

Not much Cory.

1. The guy over at DC (who’s who) gave me what Bats is like in layman’s terms. That he is the equivalent of Jack Bauer (24), with that said is Wolvie, dare I say….Vic Mackey (The Shield)???

Hmmmmmmm yeah I can see it. I mean it would fit. If you want to put it that way yes Wolverine is Vic Mackey.

2. Wolverine vs. The Thing, I know the after affects of that battle, which resulted in a metal bucket on Ben Grimm’s head, but how did that battle start & why?

Actually a good question. Let’s go way back to Fantastic Four 374. Johhny Storm was a wanted man. Spidey wanting to help find him got the attention of Doctor Strange who helped him reform the Second FF team of Wolverine, Spidey, Ghost Rider and Hulk. They went to find the Torch and found themselves in a fight with the whole FF. One thing led to another in the fight and Wolverine scared Ben. He used his claws and destroyed his face.

3. (Unlike Batman), has any of Wolverine’s sidekicks ever died? And was this the sole intent of Marvel to pair Jubilee (who fought/crushed with Robin) with him, to resemble the Dynamic Duo?

Jubilee was his main version of the Dynamic Duo in ways. She followed him around like a lost puppy most of the time. She never died. Women have died that where in Logan’s life though.

Mariko Yashida: was the love of his life. They almost got married until she called it off. Later, she was poisoned with Blowfish Toxin and pleaded to Wolverine to end her life. Wolverine reluctantly agreed to it out of love, for it was her final request.

Silver Fox: Unfortunately, because of the weapon X project, neither one are sure what memories are true, and whether they, indeed, did have a relationship. Sabretooth killed her.

4. How did Amiko become Wolvie’s adopted daughter? And who has her now?

Actually adopted her as his daughter during a mission where he encountered her with her dying mother under a pile of debris. She was left in the care of Wolverine’s friend Yukio and financially supported by the Silver Samurai.

5. Who is Lynx? And I remember Yukio vaguely, care for a recap? And when did he bag Psylocke? (who I always thought was better choice for her than Archangel)

Lynx was introduced in an eight part story in Marvel Comics

Presents called Passion Play. Lynx was raised in a germ-free environment, but the scientists entrusted to raise her decided to make her whole life into an experiment to see what would happen to a child raised with no human contact whatsoever. At age 19, another scientist decided to make her the subject of another experiment – testing out a serum capable of curing every disease known to man.

Logan saw way too much of himself in the young woman – another soul subjected to alterations without any regard for her as an individual. He made it his own personal crusade to make sure she got the chance to live life outside of the labs.

Yukio: Wolverine had his struggle with Shingen Yashida, father of Wolverine’s girlfriend Mariko Yashida. At that time she had worked for Shingen, and one of her tasks was to kill Wolverine. Instead she developed a crush on him and has subsequently aided him in bringing about Shingen’s downfall.

Later, Wolverine invited his team to Japan for his wedding to Mariko. Viper and the Silver Samurai poisoned the X-Men during a dinner that Logan hosted for them; Viper, disguised as one of the housemaids, served them poisoned tea. Logan warned Ororo, tasting the poison and knocking the cup from her hand before she could drink it. While the others were recuperating from the attack, Storm, Wolverine, Rogue and Yukio went after Viper and the Silver Samurai to stop the Samurai’s plot to assassinate Mariko, who was his half-sister. Yukio posed as a decoy, disguising herself as Mariko to lead them away from her.

During their altercation with Viper and Silver Samurai, Storm blasted the Silver Samurai with her lightning, finding to her horror that her powers were out of control. Storm drew the lightning back into herself, nearly electrocuting herself in the process. Yukio knocked Storm out of the path of her lightning bolts and dove with her into the nearby bay, enabling them to escape from the Silver Samurai.

Yukio then teamed up with Wolverine when he sought to rescue his teammate Kitty Pryde from his former teacher, the demon ninja Ogun. Yukio saved Mariko’s life once more, this time from an assassin in the employ of Ogun’s ally Shigamatsu.

It is unclear when Yukio joined the Mutant Underground, a covert mutant rights activist organization, but her activities in this area led her to be herself targeted by the techno-organic alien collective the Phalanx. Fleeing to New York, Yukio allied with the X-Men and helped defeat the aliens.

Wolverine ultimately entrusted the care of his foster daughter Amiko to Yukio, who promised to raise her as if she were her own. Soon after, she helped the mutant government operatives called X-Factor when a mission brought them to Tokyo, joking that American mutants venturing to Japan would be lost without her aid. Later, Yukio and Amiko were captured by a faction of the Hand but were rescued by Wolverine; however, Amiko remained partially within the Hand’s thrall, and when Yukio aided the ninja Elektra against the Hand, accompanying her to the Valley of Mercy and Wrath, Amiko warned the assassins of her activities. Yukio and Elektra nevertheless escaped their encounter unharmed, although it remains unclear if the Hand maintains any hold over Amiko’s mind. Yukio and Amiko were again abducted, this time by the criminal Gorn Kaishek to force Wolverine to help him defeat Gorn’s brother Haan, who had taken over Clan Yashida. When both Kaisheks were betrayed by their sister Kia, Yukio managed to escape with Amik, while Wolverine and the Silver Samurai dealt with the remaining Kaishek forces.

Yukio and Amiko were next targeted by the cyborg Lady Deathstrike and the Russian super-soldier Omega Red, two old foes of Wolverine’s who had been hired by his nemesis, the feral mutant Sabretooth. Yukio was crippled by Deathstrike, who then carved a message to Wolverine into her back. When Wolverine visited her in the hospital, Yukio asked him to kill her, as she was unwilling to live as a paraplegic, but he chose not to do so.

Yukio eventually recovered in time to aid Storm during her investigation of an underground mutant fighting arena in Tokyo. Despite her setbacks, she remains a life-loving adventurer, eager to face any challenge alongside her friends or alone.

Psylocke thing I just assume really.

Ha! I was wondering the same thing. I don’t remember anything about the two of them ever hooking up. And for the record, I liked her and Angel, much better than him and Husk”¦

6. Last week, you guys said that he has been with a lot of women so what’s his known tally and who’s on it? (Besides Mystique, Lynx?, Psylocke, Jean, Yuriko, Deathstrike, Elektra, the Native, ::phew::, Silver Fox, Viper, Yukio, Storm?) Any more?

Hahaha your list isn’t even long as I’m about to mention 43 women:

Aria, Helen Bach, Black Widow, Blair, Caley Blair, Bunny, Cyndi, Rose Carling, Charlemagne, Diamondback, Domino, Elektra, Gahck, Jean Grey, Janice, Kayla, La Bandera, Cassandra Lathrop, Sung Li, Lynx, Mai, Matriarch, Mary McKenna, Ms Marvel, Mystique, Native, Pink Lady, Seraph, Serra, Silver Fox, Snowbird, Sparrow Hawk, Stacey, Stacy X, Storm, Natsu Teshima, Tyger Tiger, Typhoid Mary, Vindicator, Viper, Witchblade, Ai-Chia Wong, Mariko Yashida, Yukio

7. Besides Cyke-Wolv-Jean has there been any other memorable love traingles in Marvel? Since Wolv-DD-Elektra is one, does any of the three acknowledge this, ever?

Haha I doubt any of those 3 acknowledge the relationship. It was dealt with I think in an issue of Elektra but that was it.

As for others.

Typhoid Mary has been with Wolverine, DD, Ghost Rider and Punisher to name a few.
Black Widow of course has Iron Man, DD,Wolverine, and wanted to be with Cap
Storm has had things with Forge, Wolverine and few others.
Kitty had Pete Wisdom and Colossus at a point

I could go on. I mean there’s numerous list here that can be named.

There was the the Cyke/Psylocke/Jean triangle back when X-Men #1 came out. I don’t really remember how that ended, but I remember it was fun while it was on :)

8. 2 out 3 falls match (which should be a weekly theme, :hint, hint:). Contestants Wolverine vs. Batman (prepared or not, you choose). I mean you said you may get emails about the battle last week, so…..eh. Anyway 1- In Madripoor, 2- Gotham, 3- A Hell in a Cell, anywhere. So???

Oh god. Wolverine is the best at what he does. I take him in most any fight. I know this. If I pick Wolverine here that the Dc fans will kill me or something.

I do take Wolverine though. 1 in Mandripoor and one in Hell in a Cell because Logan will kill.

Bats’ mutant ability to beat anyone aside, I’d take Wolvie 2 out 3 for this one”¦if not all 3.

9. Is it me or is The Rock PERFECT for Namor??

Hmmmmmm I think they could find better then Rock. I’m getting hammered for the Edge thing. You think I’m crazy enough to say Rock is Namor? I’m not that nuts.

I actually don’t have a problem with the Rock for Namor. He hasn’t a good look for him, and can act about 100-times better than any other wrestler I’ve seen. I’m sure they could find a better “actor” for the role, but I won’t bitch about the Rock.

10. DC/Marvel villain battles: Sabretooth vs. Lobo? Just a thought, what about Hulk (mad as mad can get) vs Doomsday? Black Panther vs. Bronze Tiger? (battle of the cats)?

Creed vs. Lobo? Well Lobo couldn’t beat Logan. So does he have a chance against Creed? Yes he does. Creed is not as good as Logan. I’ll take Lobo.

Agreed.

Hulk vs. Doomsday? Well if you can get that Onslaught effect then maybe. You know make him like the Hulk that beat Onslaught. Because that’s the only way. Any other way it’s Doomsday.

Agreed again.

Bronze Tiger? I really don’t know them, But what I see here is one of the greatest martial artists in the world. Not something I say about Panther so Tiger should win.

I honestly don’t really know either character that well, so I’ll refrain on this one”¦

11. What do you think would’ve been the outcome for the X-Men 1, if they had went with the “yellow spandex” theme?

Well comic fans would’ve had less to complain about. Seriously. Some fans do complain a lot about the little stuff in movies. The spandex in X-Men and organic web shooters. So I think it be one less complaint

I have no problem with the leather in the movies. I’m not a big fan of it in the comics, but I think it worked well for the movies, and don’t think the yellow spandex really would have”¦

12. About JLA/Avengers, what “specific” battles made DC look so superior (not the Taskmaster, lol)? and were the 8 reasons you listed last week, the only ones?

Well those where the main reasons. It wasn’t all the battles. I mean really it was a good limited series so I can’t complain too much can I? I know most of the Marvel heroes where outmatched though. Over powered by the DC ones. I’m not even going to debate it anymore at this rate

13. My co-worker Mike (the world’s most notorious BIGGEST Batman fanatic), noticed this in the Ultimate Avengers DVD. That the reason why The Hulk lifted Mjolnir was because maybe, just maybe, Thor isn’t really the Norse god of Thunder, but a fake with powers, like stated in the comics version. Is that’s why it got lifted?

Very much possible. That’s still the main question in Ultimates. Is Thor the real Thor or just some nut that thinks he’s Thor. Might just be he’s not really Thor. Would explain the Hulk thing

14. What are the personal opinions of you fellas about Jim Lee’s WildC.A.T.S and what happened, battle-wise, when they faced off with the X-Men? I’m just a big Grifter fan!

Oddly enough I never got the series. But I’m sure someone can email in and help out here. I’m as lost as you. Sorry.

You know I have those”¦but don’t know if I ever read them. I think they got thrown in a stack of stuff “to be read later” and later never came. Ha. I’m gonna have to see what I did with those.

15. The Avengers casting call….hmmm…Scarlet Witch, perfect! Hawkeye….maybe…I prefer Ryan Reynolds aka Deadpool aka The Flash. Edge over HHH for Thor, wow?? Bradgelina? Too bad if this movie ever got made, it would be the highest budgeted movie ever, lol!

HHH? My god they said I made a bad choice with Edge. I think HHH would be worse for Thor then my pick of Edge.

Me too, can we not have terrible actors (aka wrestlers) in any more movies”¦unless they can actually act. As was mentioned earlier, Vlad would be a kickass Thor, and I’m sure in ANY case someone can be found to replace any wrestler in any movie.

16. Do you fellas think that the Wolverine solo movie will be any good? My thing is this…if the plot follows the Origin theme, includes Sabretooth (Tyler Mane), quotes him saying “bub, rookie, and the best there is…” and has more bloodshed than that damn fight in X-2 (Deathstrike)…..perfection. Am I right?

That would work for me. I wouldn’t mind Deathstrike appearing somehow to. I mean she can. Wolverine vs. Creed is one battle they need to do. Maybe some Weapon X/Team X stuff to. Add in some Silver Fox and Maverick. Hey I’m crazy I want to much sometimes lol

I think if done right, it can be an excellent movie.

Thanks fellas! Sorry for the influx of James Howlett related questions, but he is the best at what he does, so…By the way Daron are you happy, or MAD happy no Gambit (Orlando Bloom???, lol) was included in the X-men franchise yet???

I think my answer here pretty well goes without saying”¦
