The Show

Many people would question how Alec Baldwin gets his own “Best of SNL” being that he was never a cast member. Well hosting the show 12 times – tied for second most ever – sure gives a good amount of material to create an 80 minute DVD. While Alec Baldwin’s movie career has been up and down to say the least he has been one of the most consistently solid SNL hosts.

The five sketches that were the most enjoyable were, ‘Canteen Boy,’ ‘NPR: Schwetty Balls,’ ‘Voicemail,’ ‘Pyramid of Pain’ and ‘Bill Brasky.’

‘Canteen Boy’ is a classic Adam Sandler bit and the addition of Alec Baldwin as the Scout Master who shows an attraction to Canteen Boy makes for one of the most memorable SNL sketches of that era.

‘NPR: Schwetty Balls’ is another memorable sketch. Alec plays Mr. Schwetty who is on National Public Radio promoting his “Schwetty Balls.”

‘Voicemail’ has Alec playing a seemingly normal guy just trying to record his voicemail greeting message. After replaying the message he notices his voice sounds…well like he may be batting for the other team. His further attempts to sound more masculine and heterosexual just cause the voicemail to sound more and more like Richard Simmons.

‘Pyramid of Pain’ has Baldwin with Sandler again. Alec plays a diet guru who ruthlessly beats the men who join his program so they stop eating. Sandler plays a former program member who has come back for revenge.

‘Bill Brasky,’ well every Brasky sketch is a classic. This one has John Goodman and Will Ferrell and even an appearance of the legendary Brasky (although his face is not shown.)

There were several easily forgettable sketches. Two in particular stood out, ‘Greenhilly,’ a sketch that was an attempt to create a spoof of a really bad soap-opera, and ‘The breakfast,” a sketch that really has no laughs whatsoever.

Overall though it’s a pretty solid group of sketches.

The DVD

Video

The video is shown in Full Frame 1.33:1. The video quality is solid.

Audio

The audio is offered in English Dolby Digital 2.0. There are no captions of subtitles, or any other languages available.

Special Features

The special features include 2 dress sketches, which are sketches that didn’t make the live show. The first one called ‘Political ads’ is actually quite funny and it’s baffling how it never made the show. The ‘Dance Party’ sketch is decent.
