Cast:
David Spade….Himself

The Show

David Spade was an SNL cast member from 1993 to 1996. He has hosted the show twice, in 1998 and 2005. He was a writer for the show since 1990 and was in sketches from that time to his bump up to “cast member” in 1993. During his stint as a cast member SNL was pretty solid and his time there is most connected with the likes of Chris Farley and Adam Sandler. Him and Farley took that chemistry to the big screen for ‘Tommy Boy’ and ‘Black Sheep.’

There were many memorable sketches in this DVD compilation. All in all there were only a couple sketches that could be deemed disposable or bad. My favourite sketches were: ‘Total Bastard Airlines,’ (aka Bah-bye) ‘Dylan & Petty,’ ‘Gap girls,’ ‘celebrity roast,’ ‘Spade in America: Hatcher,’ ‘Dirtball and burnout convention,’ ‘Spade in America: Penn’ and ‘Hollywood Minute.’

The three Spade in America sketches are a blast to watch. The Hollywood Minute sketch can be also called a Spade in America sketch but on the DVD its titled Hollywood Minute because it’s a compilation of all of Spade’s Hollywood Minute sketches. The Teri Hatcher one has the ‘Desperate Housewives’ star pretend to be Spade and he pretend to be her. The Sean Penn one has Spade getting a tattoo, as Penn would only agree to do the sketch if Spade agreed to get a tattoo. There also is a Christopher Walken Spade in America sketch, it’s ok but not great.

The famous Bah-Bye sketch with Helen Hunt still holds up after all these years. The ‘Dylan & Petty’ appearance on Weekend Update, Bob Dylan portrayed by Dana Carvey and Spade as Tom Petty, is funny for some odd reason that I can’t put my finger on. The ‘Gap Girls’ sketch shows Sandler, Farley and Spade at their SNL peaks. ‘Celebrity Roast’ has Spade do a dead on Owen Wilson. The dirtball sketch shows Spade in all his Joe Dirt glory.

The most forgettable sketch was ‘Salon’ where Spade plays a gay hairdresser trying to sell his product Salon. It definitely earns a skip to next scene.

There are several more average sketches but the fact I can only identify one bad sketch shows how deep this DVD is.

The audio is available in English Dolby Digital 2.0. Thee are no subtitles, captions or other languages available.

Special Features

There are two dress sketches, both of which are boring. The Spade’s appearance on Conan is pretty funny. Not really much to talk about in regard to special features though.
