SOLICITS! WIZZY WORLD LA!

FUN FUN FUN!

A LAME OPENING TAG-LINE TOO

HERE AT:

That’s right – we are here again folks at Marvel News & Views with what started off as a horribly boring week for news, but thank god we had Wizard World LA to kick it up a notch. Add in the big Marvel solicits for June, and a few special announcements from the ‘M’ and we have ourselves a column that is going to take me at least an hour to write.

The question is – what movie should I put on to watch while I write it…

JUNE FLOWERS BRING CIVIL WAR!!!!
(Reaking of Newsaramassitude)

As always, I am not going to list EVERYTHING as that would get exceptionally boring, so I will just be grabbing some of the creme de la creme, or at least the ones I have something to say about. If you want to know all the best of the best, just click on that top link there and find out that you really aren’t missing much.

ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #31
The Zombie F.F. are out!
Something is eating the earth!
DOCTOR DOOM MUST SAVE THEM!

I gotta say this sounds like such a ‘classic’ FF story – I am looking forward to it quite a bit. Plus the zombie FF are fantastic, and the greatest villain the FF have had in years (aside from the standard Hatton call-out of….
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

ULTIMATES vol. 2 #12
That’s right – it all ends here! With a cover that spans every major Ultimate character ever, and a promise to be huge. How could it not. Ultimates has, issue to issue, been one of the greatest things Millar’s ever written, and where I’m going to be sad to see it end, and annoyed that is probably going to have a huge cliffhanger for Volume 3, I still can’t wait.

LAST PLANET STANDING
I just want to say that I am surprised I missed this last month with the solicits.. maybe two months ago. Whatever, it’s not my kind of book – but it is worth mentioning that the M2 Universe seems to play a prominant role. That has to be worth something to someone out there.

NOW…

WAIT FOR IT….

THE ETERNALS #1
If you aren’t sure why this is getting a special moment of pause, it is because it is written by Sandman scribe himself, Neil Gaiman. If you aren’t aware, I break for Gaiman.

Now not only is Gaiman taking a spin on the Eternals, it seems it’s a story about a man who isn’t quite human. He has dreams of people and things that have never happened. Is he mad? Or is he Eternal? OOOooo I should write copy.

GIANT-SIZE HULK #1
As a continuity wedge for Planet Hulk – this book is useless to me, but again, I’m sure someone out there gives a damn.

RUNAWAYS #17
This is the last issue in the just started ‘Parental Guidance’ storyline, where we learn who is running the New Pride – world’s change – characters live and die – and if you aren’t reading Runaways, in at least TPB style, then you really shouldn’t be reading comics. You should be off somewhere, pondering why your life, is in fact, completely meaningless.

SHE-HULK #9
Just wanted to point this out to you people:

So… After She-Hulk and SPOILER went and SPOILERED, it’s time to deal with the fall out! And that leads to a SPOILER with SPOILER!!! Miss this one, and you’ll be kicking yourself in the CENSORED for months!

I love Dan Slott.

MARVEL ROMANCE REDUX: LOVE IS A FOUR LETTER WORD
Filed in the ‘Dani will have to get it’ pile – this book is all about romance stories, old ones, being retold by Marvel’s best. So it will be at least worth a laugh or two.

CIVIL WAR #2
And, no fooling, true believer… this issue features one of the most shocking climaxes in Marvel Comics history. Miss THIS one and you might just regret it for the rest of your life!

I would just like to make a note that I had written my bit on the Runaways before even reading this. I swear somebody in Marvel is bugging my house, and I am going to start wearing my tin foil helmet.

CIVIL WAR – FRONT LINE #1/#2
Norman Osborne? Civil War told from the perspective of reporters? I’m there.

Now – as you see there are quite a few books that are going to be touched by Civil War, and it’s already established that quite a few other books will be coming out in the coming months about the mega-crossover. Let me just state the things you need to know about each of these titles:
* SPIDER-MAN IS TORN UP INSIDE
* SOMETHING MEAN HAPPENS IN STAMFORD
* QUICKSILVER JOINS X-FACTOR
* NEW AVENGERS GET ANOTHER NEW TEAM

I think that covers it.

EXILES #82
In the last issue of Exiles’ WORLD TOUR storyline, which has been fantastically fun – they say goodbye to the ‘HEROES REBORN’ world – and sadly, Tony Bedard.

Say hello to Chris Claremont Exiles, I can’t promise I’ll be with you much longer…

THE X-BOOKS

I’m the huge X-Fan around here. I think I’d be hard pressed to find another Nexus staffer that is as ‘X’ as me. That’s not a challenge, although we could turn it into one and have some fun… it’s just a throw out to address the fact that not one single book listed in the ‘X’ section of the solicits interests me in any further than a ‘Hmmm’ fashion.

That’s bad.

That’s also all the solicits, except for the Essential She-Hulk which I’ll be picking up.

Meh.

ZOMBIES #5 GETS A SECOND TREATMENT
(Rip roaringly teased from Newsaramalamadingdong)

Marvel’s theory on doing variant covers has had a lot to do with one or two factors lately. The first is a ‘BIG BIG BIG BOOK’ like the Eternals title mentioned earlier, or a big crossover. This, though, is my favorite. When a book gets so popular that it needs a second printing, it will get a second cover. That makes the book a collectable for people who like that kind of thing, as well as give it a big of a special treatment because it sold out.

Plus – this cover is hysterical.

IRON MAN GETS NEW FRIENDS
(Pilfered from Ews-Nay Ah-yay Ama-Ray)

So Iron Man has been given the team of Daniel and Charlie Knapf – Daniel being the creator of HBO’s ‘Carnivale’

A standard new Marvel practice of adding Hollywood elements to their characters. I can’t say I’m completely against this, and he seems quite knowledgable (he and his son) on Iron Man lore.

The first arc is NOT going to be Civil War related due to the timing of their hiring and things, but the second arc is going to be picking up right with Civil War and all of the things that have made Iron Man a bit questionable figure in the Marvel U. Iron Man isn’t my guy… much more of an Ultimate Iron Man kinda guy, but they do sound like they have a bit of passion over the character.

MIDDLE EASTERN SPIDER-MAN
(Imported from Newsarama)

Spidey is heading over and getting printed in Arabic. That’s kinda neat isn’t it? Countries like Egypt and Jordan will get to see the wallcrawler fighting crime. As always, I’m a big fan of anything that brings comics to another venue where they can be viewed by a larger audience.

WIZARD WORLD L.A. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
(East Coast Represented @ Newsarama)

MONDO MARVEL
BEYOND!
It’s kind of interesting that Marvel seems to realize that there is power in their B and C list stars. So in what seems like a reaction to ‘Annihilation’ we’re going to see Beyond! which is going to feature a bunch of B/C-Listers going out into space. Sounds like fun.

XAVIER
Does he have his powers? Deadly Genesis #5 has the answers.

ON MALIBU
Remember those guys? Of COURSE you don’t. Malibu was CrossGen long before Devil’s Due ever was. HA! Anyway – no, you won’t see any Malibu characters appearing anytime soon. Just wanted to throw that out there.

HALO IS COMING!
(Fragged from Newsarama)

Halo is coming to Marvel with Bungee Studios. Unlike standard Marvel outtings, this seems like it’s going to be much closer to the Matrix books. One graphic novel with a few stories inlaid throughout by various creators. Here are some of them:
Moebius, Phil Hale, Ed Lee, Tsutomo Nihei, Jay Faerber, Andrew Robinson, Simon Bisley and Lee Hammock.

“With Marvel and Halo’s similar loyal fan bases, we are confident that Halo’s transition into the comic book arena will further bolster the characters, storylines and huge popularity of the property with not only the longtime, dedicated Halo fans but among comic book fans as well,” said Dan Buckley.

Does anyone find this statement amusing? Are all comic fans videogame players? I guess there is a heavy crossover between the two, and again, anything that brings more people to the medium, but I don’t think the fanbases are all that similar. If you have ever played a broadband game of Halo while some fragging teenager is sitting on a respawn spot and screaming racial obcenities about your mother, the first thing in your brain should, in fact be – “Yep, this is the guy who I’m going to hand Watchmen to.”

SUPEREMELY ULTIMATE POWER OF CROSSOVEROCITY
(Crossed over from Newsarama)

Marvel has announced quite regularly that the Ultimate U will never crossover with the 616 Universe. So instead they’ve gone and they are taking the Ultimate U and having it meet up with the JMS born Squad Supreme world.

Seems to me that they are kind of twisting their own words on this, and I don’t see how you are going to take two worlds of such dynamic difference and put them together. It is possible, as Exiles has been doing it fantastically for months now, but…. it just makes me uneasy that this is the gateway to other more destructive crossovers. Like heroin.

GUESS WHO IS STICKING WITH MARVEL!
(On contract from Newsarama)

It’s J. Scott Campbell. He will be working with Jeph Loeb on a future Spider-Man project. What does this mean? It means that we can expect a Spidey project to have delays sometime in 2007. HA! ZING!

CUP O JOE PANEL – WIZ WORLD L.A.
(Brought to you by Newsarama)

* Skottie Young will be the artist on X-Men/Runaways Free Comic Day book.

* Banshee is really really dead. No return. The end.

* Nomad too is… dead.

* The New Warriors will probably, at the end of Civil War…. be dead.

Wow – lots of death. That’s about it.

WOW! I am ….. filled with ennui…

As you see there isn’t a helluva lot of commentary on WizWorld – but that seems like there isn’t a lot coming out of Marvel due to WWLA. Yes, there are a couple of announcements, but it just seems like the bits they did reveal were all kind of boring and ‘eh’.

It seems that the entire Marvel World is going to be turned on it’s ear, and I just can’t seem to rally myself behind it. I’m sitting and loving books like Apocalypse / Dracula and Powers more than I am standard staples like my ol’ favorites in Spidey and X-Men.

Maybe it has something to do with me doing all these damned news reports. It could, but probably moreso it’s just a bad mood, as if you’ve ever read my comic reviews, I’m usually quite a positive guy. I’m so torn right now, both sad and thrilled. I feel like Iain Burnside….

Okay, well that’s enough from me – I can’t seem to find any comic movie news as every site is filled with WWLA news. Maybe next week, hmm?

Hope you all enjoy V For Vendetta. I’ll be leaving in roughly an hour.

Ciao.
