The Film
This is the followup to Microcosmos, a film much like Baraka where what limited story (IE: none) is told solely through film clips. Microcosmos was a look at the insect world at a quality never before (or since) seen. It was an absolute visual feast and a must see for nature documentary afficionadoes the world over.
Genesis is the, for lack of a better word, followup to that. Instead of purely focusing on the insect kingdom Nuridsany and Perennou take us through the many stages of life. Birth, Growth, Creating More Life (lots of animal sex in this one) and Death (stopping off at other places along the way).
Instead of the more or less random (but equally beautiful) visuals of Microcosmos the story progresses in this with the help of the Narrator. Who is the stereotypical wise Shamanistic looking guy who tells a story about each stage before setting off that series of video footage.
I really can’t talk about anything in this except for the absolutely unbelievable video footage used to tell the story. Like Baraka every frame of this movie is breathtaking. It even makes animal sex something beautiful to behold instead of the usual joke the Discovery Channel makes us think of it.

The Video
Visually as stunning as Microcosmos and it looks nice on my crappy old CRT 27″ TV
The Audio
Unfortunately the only language track is an English language dub. It’s a good voiceover but nonetheless the original French language track would have been nice.
The Extras
There are really next to no extras on this disc to speak of. There is an image gallery but you’ll have just seen basically all of that while watching the movie as well as trailers for Genesis, Murderball and Born Into Brothels.
Nothing worth rating but since there’s SOMETHING
