The Ultimate Marvel Handbook #4 (#159)

Hello everyone and welcome to another addition of the Handbook. I’m Jim Trabold.

Hello Daron good to see you again bud. Had a good week myself how about you?

Hey Jim, my week’s been pretty good. Lots of work, not much else.

Cool. Personally I still have a lot of books to read. Damn big week.

Ok fine we can get on with the article

What?!? I Didn’t even say anything.

I was recently going through the Earth X trilogy, and was wondering how much of it was relatable to the current Marvel Universe. Was there a notion that this might be the actual end of the MU, or was it just a huge “What if?” story trying to connect everything together in the MU that seemingly wasn’t connected? I thought it was a really good story, but I’m just unsure about how much of it is actually true in regards to the MU we see now. For instance, the Celestial seeds and the whole Asgardian thing.

Actually Earth X, Paradise X, and Universe X are mostly Alex Ross and Jim Krueger’s e-imaginings of a dystopian future for the Marvel Universe. In reality it is a What If type story. It has some of the past involved and re-imaging of the past (with such concepts as Nightcrawler being Belasco and Colossus being Sinister. Also the fact Marvel has stated that the story is an alternate time line. Even Paradise X does clarify that in issue 11. The issue reveals that Paradise X is set in 2003. So I would say it’s a good read just don’t take it all literal.

Just read Annihilation when all the sudden Drax the Destroyer shows up as a tattooed bad ass! Last I remember he was a mental midget in Warlock and the Infinity Watch. What happened to him?

Actually you can thank the Drax limited series of last year. It sort of was a prequel of sorts to the Annihilation story. As a detainee aboard a galactic prison transport, Drax crashed on Earth and escaped imprisonment, along with the other inmates. He died and was reborn with his intelligence and fought the other inmates when they threatened the local townsfolk and the 10 year old girl who befriended him

What?!? A Marvel character died and was reborn”¦ I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Ha Ha Ha Ha! Love the Ultrons. But did you mean malevolent, or do you just have robot sympathies? Are you a robot our Dark Overlord created with the history of the entire Marvel U. programmed in?

Actually I’m not a robot. I did that for the most part to get a reaction. I meant to fix it as well. I wanted to post this instead:

Real name: Ultron
Identity: No dual identity
Occupation: Mass murderer, scientist, would-be world conqueror
Citizenship: Inapplicable
Place of Birth: unrevealed
Group Affiliation: None; formerly Sons of Yinsen, Lethal Legion, Masters of Evil Education: unrevealed
Known Aliases: Ho Yinsen, Great Devil, Iron Man, Ultimate Ultron, Mark, Ultron Mark Twelve, Omega, Crimson Cowl, Ultron-5 (and hundreds of other sequential numerical designations)
Known Relatives: Hank Pym, Wasp, Jocasta, Alkhema, Vision, Rex, Robos & Bio-Synthezoids, Wonder Man, Grim Reaper, Scarlet Witch all regarded by Ultron as part of his “extended family” due to their familial connections with the Vision

I also programmed him to say that he’s not a robot if anyone were to catch on”¦

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day,

Agreed on not wanting to see any wrestlers (or most anyone in any other form of entertainment) in acting roles. They might be able to look the part (imagine Brock Lesnar in a Juggernaut outfit), but most are bad actors in wrestling angles. Don’t want to see that sort of bad acting for 2 hours, unless it’s a porn flick.

Thanos is my favorite comic character. I’m looking forward to Annihilation mainly because of Thanos’ involvement. Where do you think he ranks with other Villains in comics? I can’t really think of anyone having his combination of intelligence, strength, power, cunning, and skill.

Yeah, an extra powered up Thor beat him one-on-one, but he’s a good guy and is supposed to win. Can any villain measure up? I think Darkseid and Dr. Doom are the closest, but to me, they come up short.

Well I consider Thanos the second best Marvel villain. I think Doom is first. It’s hard to argue against Doom. He’s been around longer and been used more. So my ranking for Thanos is 2.

1. Doom
2. Thanos
3. Magneto
4. Apocalypse
5. Loki

That’s my current top 5.

Add in DC I likely would make Thanos 3 I mean Luthor has to be 2.

Another great column. Take care.

You too Roger.

Jeff emails

Hi Jim and Daron,

On the WildC.A.T.S/X-Men mini–think of it as Elseworlds. It’s a series of meetings between various members of both teams through various eras, like Wolverine fighting the Daemonites in WWII in one of the issues, if I recall correctly. I do reemember thinking at the time that the art was better than the story, but my tastes have changed, I should dig those out again. Mmmm….Voodoo….

On whatever that long ass list of characters was about–why on Earth, Jim, did you feel it necessary to list 13 Ultrons with EXACTLY THE SAME information? And Daron, where the Hell were you on that one? You working for Tom Brevoort already?

I should’ve edited myself when I thought of it. Sorry.

Well as you saw”¦I was torn between editing, and leaving it because it was just so silly. And look I got you to email about it, so mission accomplished :)

On WWE-Superhero casting–Edge should only play ONE character in all of comics: GAMBIT. And he should be disembowled by a Fastball Special, resurrected, and decimated again. The WHOLE MOVIE could be like this! FACES OF DEATH: THE GAMBIT FILES, STARRING EDGE. This thing would win Oscars! They could shoot it on Brokeback Mountain! Edge lives there anyway. HHH was the best part of Blade-Trinity, which explains exactly what was wrong with Blade-Trinity. But he’s a natural with a big hammer in his hand so he would be a better choice than Edge, who wouldn’t even make a good Stilt-Man. Rock as Namor? Sure, he could do it. Might actually be a good role for him. With a good director and a REALLY good script, and no retard Sean Patrick Scott Flannery Shamus Irish Bastard sidekick bringing the movie down, a Dwayne Johnson Namor could be really good. I’ve been trying to think of a role for Ric Flair…Silvermane perhaps? Or the Owl? He’s got the WOOOOO! down already. I saw a photo manipulation of Goldberg as the Rhino–pretty funny. And running into people is pretty much what Billy does anyway.

HAHAHAHa Alright I admit Dwayne Johnson is getting good at acting so maybe he can pull off the Namor thing. I just didn’t feel like more hell with the wrestling actors thing. I mean I got killed for Edge. God damn you people.

Now here again. I’m tempted to edit this last part out, but find it highly amusing that Jim just damned you all”¦I guess my morbid sense of humor won out.

How ’bout the Thunderbolts? Can you help me pinpoint when exactly Zemo and Songbird became an item? Because in the “milestone” issue #100, EVERYTHING was wrong, near as I can figure.

Can I say I don’t actually know yet. That picture above is of the April cover. Thunderbolts # 101. It does read:

THUNDERBOLTS #101
Written by FABIAN NICIEZA
Pencils by DALE ROSS
Cover by TOM GRUMMETT
Zemo and Songbird? When did that happen? A new base, a new mission statement, and a new outlook face the no-longer-new Thunderbolts!
32 PGS./Rated T+ SUGGESTED FOR TEENS AND UP …$2.99

So we should find out then.

Peace out Dark Overlord and his personal Gambit!

HEY Gambit is Daron’s own personal Gambit. I’m that other reade’s Gambit.

I think I can have room on my schedule to have a few personal Gambits. Though no one could ever take the original’s place”¦

Kent emails

Hey, Jim. Hey, Daron. How’s it hangin’?

Hangin’ fine, Kent.

Jim, no offense, but you so pulled that list of Wolverine’s scores out of your ass.

For definite hook-ups, you can say Mystique (disguised as Jean Grey and later during the House of M), Silver Fox (but only if those memories weren’t weapon x fiction), Tyger Tiger, Native, Gahck (that’s the tribal chick from the savage land, right? Btw, wasn’t it hinted at the end of that annual that she’d later had Logan’s child? Was there ever any throwback to that?), Charlemagne (the spy chick from Spider-man vs. Wolverine, correct?), and Typhoid Mary.

On likely hook-ups, you can probably add Yukio (unless they actually did hook up on panel somewhere and I missed it) and Stacey-X.

On the “no” list:

Jean Grey: they made out a few times and that’s all I’ve ever seen. I assume we’re not including the Ultimate or the End universes here.

Um can I suggest you reread X-Factor #61 part of the X-Tinction Agenda. That really does imply them having sex. Not just once either.

Diamondback: when she and Dazzler switched bodies, she was all for it but when Longshot and Dazzler (in Diamondback’s body) walked in, Logan was all panicked and swore that nothing had or was going to happen. What a dumbass… especially after Diamondback pointed out that Dazzler (in her body) and Longshot were keeping their regular sleeping arrangements.

I don’t know here. I think Diamondback might have screwed him at some point here. Even though you don’t see it on panel

Black Widow: Again, I’m assuming we’re not including events from their Ultimate counterparts here. Wolverine & Cap saved Natasha as a child from the Nazis back in the 40’s and she took to calling him “little grandfather” or something like that. With all that, can you seriously see the two of them hitting the sack? I can’t.

This one might not have happened. But we both know Wolverine has a thing for Red heads and that Natasha did want to be with Steve so why not Wolverine?

Bunny: I thought she was Sabretooth’s squeeze. Hell, I don’t think she and Logan ever even met on panel prior to her death.

Your thinking of Birdy. Bunny and Cyndi are a pair. Those two where both with Wolvie.

Elektra: She and Logan never got together (or even got the least bit romantic) in any of the issues of Wolverine I ever read. Are you sure you’re not assuming this one based on the M2 universe because of Wild Thing?

They where in 616 in ways to. It was more implied in Elektra’s series then in Wolverines. It was after Logan came back to reality.

Ms Marvel: Never happened on panel that I saw and during Erik Larsen’s run on Wolverine when a drunken Carol came onto Logan, I think they even went so far as to say that they’d never gotten together.

Again the Carol thing is implied a few times. But I am mostly saying here some stuff happens off panel.

Psylocke: Psylocke once mentioned the two of them having a pretty intimate psychic bond, but nothing more than that. Never saw anything happen and the two never seemed to share any kind of real attraction. So, “no” on this one as well.

This one I’m clearly more wrong on. Sort of got proved that last week. I did assume to much there.

Seraph: The midget woman? Are you kidding me?

I am not kidding you. He did her. Quote: “I was a punk when Seraph found me. All instincts. All muscles. No mercy. Less brains. An animal on two legs. A predator. First time we met, she backed me down with a laugh. She brought beauty into my world. And grace. But her lessons had a price. She gave me free will. Before Seraph, I did what I pleased, I didn’t care. She taught me actions have consequences. And how we deal with them? That defines out morality. Before Seraph, I could claim a kind o’ innocence. Sometimes, God help me, I miss those days.”

Um”¦it doesn’t say anything here about them “hooking up”, Jim. I’m not saying they did or didn’t, I’m just pointing out that this passage, really doesn’t mean anything to me in this argument.

Snowbird: Never saw it and can’t see it happening.

Picture above sort of shows it could’ve happened. She wouldn’t have argued against it.

HAHAHA! You’d make a great lawyer, Jim.

Storm: Seemed like there were a couple of close moments over the years between the two, but I never saw it on panel and they were never an official couple. And, I can’t see these two sneaking around or being just “friends with benefits.”

That kiss there says other wise. I think Storm wanted to be With Wolverine at a point so I can see it happening

Vindicator: Married to Guardian and as far as I know never shared Wolverine’s feelings.

She was alone with him in a cabin. He was a wild beast. Even with James around why the hell not?

Witchblade: I barely remember that crap series, but I don’t recall the two of them even having so much as a vibe. And, wasn’t the series AU anyway?

Alright this one is another one I assume for the most part. You sort of get the feeling it could’ve happened

Viper: Never saw it. Plus, the two are long-standing enemies that hate each other’s guts. I can’t see Logan shacking up with an enemy like that.

You’re forgetting a known fact. Viper and Wolverine are married. I would bet they did do something.

Mariko: Again, never saw it happen and based on the honorable nature of their courtship, I’d say the two never did the deed before she died.

Again they where to be married. I think Wolverine likely did something with her.

I have no clue regarding Domino.

In the realm of possibility again.

I don’t even know who Aria, Helen Bach, Blair, Caley Blair, Cyndi, Rose Carling, Sung Li, Lynx, Mai, Matriarch, Mary McKenna, Janice, Kayla, La Bandera, Cassandra Lathrop, Pink Lady, Serra, Sparrow Hawk, Stacey, Natsu Teshima, Ai-Chia Wong are. So, I won’t argue with you on those.

Can I suggest reading more Wolverine issues?

Also we can add in a woman named Itsu. She was with Wolverine’s child till Bucky killed her

You know”¦I’m starting to long for the days of Superman picking up Tho’s hammer”¦

Who do you guys think would make for the best/most interesting significant other for the ol’ canucklehead? I for one thought that either Psylocke or the White Queen would have made for an interesting couple with Wolverine.

I think Betsy more. I think Emma is a whore. But I guess we’ll see about Emma in Astonishing.

Personally, I think he should hook up with Polaris. Talk about being the submissive in that relationship”¦

BTW, in response to Daron’s question about how the Jean Grey/Cyclops/Psylocke triangle worked out. Psylocke started coming on to Cyclops (not literally and no pun intended). Jean was mildly irritated with Cyclops once or twice because of his British ninja-ogling, but as far as I know it never became an issue with her. Despite some close calls, Cyclops and Psylocke never got together and later during the whole Betsy/Kwannon arc, Psylocke’s attraction to Cyclops was explained as being due to Kwannon’s influence and the issue was never raised again.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go drink away the shame of spending way too much time arguing about the sexual exploits of comicbook characters.

I’d say that’s probably a good idea.

Pathetically yours.

Just don’t get like Logan and drink and then screw around a lot.

Why the hell not?!? Logan shouldn’t be the only one having all the fun”¦even if it is all in Jim’s head.

JG emails

Pretty cool new layout you guys have, though I never would’ve imagined that Daron would look like the son of Darth Vader and Marvin The Martian.

Thanks for the compliment. HAHAHAHAHA That’s a great one.

That’s actually a common misconception. It’s true my father was Marvin the Martian, but my mother was in fact Dark Helmet”¦not this Vader chap. But I can see the confusion. Thanks for the compliment.

Just wanted to say that i agree about how Ryan Reynolds can pull off Deadpool, but now that i think about it, he could’ve been a pretty good Spider-Man, IMO. I’m not knocking Toby, as he’s done a pretty awesome job, but if given the chance, Ryan could’ve done a decent job. Not only does he have the physique, but he also has that smart-ass quality that Spidey is known for.

Also, just wanted to know if you’ve checked out the Avengers cartoon movie thats currently out on DVD.

I have seen it. It’s not to bad. It’s sort of a combination of Ultimates and Avengers origins. More Ultimates then Avengers but in the end it wasn’t that bad. It was well designed and plotted out. I enjoyed watching it and look forward to the sequel.

Cory emails

What’s good, Jamie & Daron? Cory here, back again! Let’s get to it:

Hey Cory. It’s all good here. Even the move to Fridays. It allows us to cover Wednesdays books when needed earlier.

1. What other non-super “powers” exist in the Marvel U? How bout Spidey’s WALLCRAWLING ability, OMNILINGUALISM: the ability to decipher any language, SUPER BITING: the ability to chew through matter which would be much too hard to bite with normal hardness teeth, WEAPON BASED POWERS: powers primarily derived from an object of some sort. Examples: Green Lantern, Stargirl, Wonder Woman and Captain America, ENHANCED SENSES (can be trained, not natural). ARCHERS or MARTIAL ARTISTS, also.

Yep That’s what I mean. There’s a ton. It would likely take me a full issue just to cover powers. We’re talking about people who also are good with swords, cards, and weapons of any sort. Punisher for example is a master with guns. Bullseye can use anything as a weapon. Swordsman is good with swords. Spidey and Ant-Man can talk to bugs.

I’d say Spidey’s version of that, at least, should be classified as an “inherent” power.

2. Is it true that DD shot The Punisher in DD#164? Whoa, any details?

I think we got the issue number wrong here.

Daredevil was in the hospital in 164 after a fight with the Hulk. That’s right the Hulk.

Let’s go to issue 183. Part of the Child’s Play story

I’d say the cover shows it. These two have never and I mean never seen eye to eye. Both of them have problems with each other. Frank does shoot Matt. I think there’s a few times Frank comes close to. I mean these two fight a lot.

I believe he asked if DD shot the Punisher, not the other way around.

*shakes head*

3. (Hopefully I don’t start another riot, but) Who are the top 10 toughest females in comics ever? Toughest=Fighting Ability.

Hmm ok here’s where I get in trouble again. Lol Alright in my point of view. (everyone has a different one) Here’s my top 10

1. Ronin
2. Gamora
3. Mantis
4. Elektra
5. Ms Marvel
6. Black Widow
7. Spider-Woman I
8. Silver Sable
9. She-Hulk
10. Storm

You know I don’t really want to get into this, but I just don’t get how you’re putting She-Hulk that low, especially below, Elektra, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, Spider-Woman, and Silver Sable? She’s the freakin’ female version of the Hulk. I’d think she’d pretty well pummel most of the girls on that list. But that’s just me.

4. “Yes…but who wins the ugly contest?” The Hulk, The Thing still gets tail…Alicia Masters, (the black one & the white one). I believe this is according to the sympathy value, detailed in comics/movie.

Hulk does have Betty. Hell Hulk had Marlo to. He was damn Mister Fixit with Marlo. I think Hulk has had more girls then Thing so I’d give the chick appeal to Hulk. Plus Jennifer Connelly played Betty in movies. She’s pretty hot.

Agreed

5. With your quote of Deathstroke beating the JLA being “one of the most worst moments in comics in the last 10 yrs”—w/o Bats or Supes, what is the possibility of The Taskmaster doing the same with the (New) Avengers?

Taskmaster has fought the whole Avengers team a few times. We’re talking teams with some powerful members. Not all them though

Avengers 195-196: Cap, Wasp, Ant-Man II, Yellowjacket, Wonder Man, Jocasta, Iron Man and Ms Marvel

Avengers 233: Hawkeye and Ant-Man II

Avengers (V3) 26: Ant-Man II, Captain Marvel III, Silverclaw, and Ms Marvel

Avengers (V3) 38: Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Triathalon, Ms Marvel and Wonder Man

He of course also appeared in Avengers Forever and JLA/Avengers. He’s taken the Avengers down a few times too.

6. Is it me or does The Silver Samurai resemble The Shredder? Lol

Yes he does but I think he predates Shredder. I’ll have to look into it

7. What is Sabretooth’s sole basis for killing? Does he kill for sport, pleasure, or just to utterly piss off Wolverine? Or all 3?

Let’s take something from a profile I once read:

Sabretooth is a bloodthirsty mercenary who will not hesitate to murder innocent people to fulfill his contracts. Though skilled and powerful, he is arrogant and sometimes known to underestimate his opponents. If Wolverine did his best to suppress his inner demons, Sabretooth is the exact opposite: he has totally embraced the beast within.

He’s an animal and he takes pleasure out of killing. He also does it for the other reasons to.

8. (I will ask you guys about some of Wolverine’s lover next time), but with him being with Storm, Jean & Mystique when did X-men become Real World: Westchester? Ms. Marvel (a major upgrade), Domino aka Cable’s ex flame, Witchblade??? Wow. Mystique is just a booty call, I think, or uses him for info & influence more than sex. I noticed a trend also, he favors Asian women, superhero women & female villains…there goes any normal girls chances.

Haha Logan has a thing for Asians and redheads.

Who doesn’t? Though not the second part”¦redheads make me queasy.

He’s just one of those type that would go with anything that suits him at the time. Mystique of course is mostly the type that will sleep with anyone. You have a point though. X-mansion is like a soap opera.

9. Whoa……..The Punisher had Typhoid Mary. I always thought that Frank was so devoted to Maria’s memory…until urges overcame him, how & when this happen with T.M?

Frank’s had his share of women. Even though his wife is dead don’t mean he doesn’t get himself some.

Again I believe the Typhoid/Frank thing here goes back to Marvel Comics Presents. I just have to recall the issues. I do know Typhoid did seduce him. She seduces a lot of men.

10. Kitty/Pete Wisdom/Colossus….hmmm, first off she has a thing for Petes, watchout Spidey & isn’t both guys older than her (statutorally), especially P. Wisdom?

Colossus was older but not too much older. He still couldn’t drink when they started even though she was 13 at the time.

Wisdom. Well he’s just pedophile. I never really liked him.

Oh and if you want to see Kitty going after Spidey for a date read Ultimate Spidey.

And also, Kitty’s been of legal age for awhile now”¦

Is it just me or is the most disturbing issue of the Handbook to date?

11. Any other famous love triangles?

Colossus/Kitty/Wisdom
MJ/Spidey/Gwen
Black Cat/Spidey/MJ
Swordsman/Mantis/Vision/Scarlet Witch
Vision/ Scarlet Witch/Wonder Man
Cyclops/Jean/Angel
Quicksilver/Crystal/Black Knight/Sersi
Black Widow/DD/Elektra.
Wolverine/Jean/Cyclops
Psylocke/Cyclops/Jean
Emma/Cyclops/Jean
Warpath/Siryn/Deadpool

I could keep going for hours. Comics have tons

Yeah, how about the current Havok/Polaris/Iceman?

12. Speaking of inter-company crossovers, which ones would you guys like to see in the future?

Actually I liked the deal Marvel just did with Top Cow. They will be teaming up more. I really would like to see Marvel more do less of their full company ones a year. This year got a little too many at once. I wouldn’t mind a renewal of Ultraverse from Marvel but I doubt that’s possible.

I like the idea of Marvel doing the Ultimate/Squadron thing. It looks good. I just hope for no Ultimate/616. Exiles I don’t mind. Exiles can cross into everything.

Another big Marvel/DC one would be nice. The idea they had for Batman/DD would be cool to. I doubt we’ll see it anytime soon but hell I liked it.

13. Comic Fan Comic Complaints: any others that have been brought to you guys attentions?

Well not many people like the current armored Spidey. Not to say it’s the best look but fans don’t seem to like it at all.

Of course the organic webbing for Spider-Man the movie and now in comics.

The clone saga.

(notice a lot of Spider-Man ones?)

The X-Men movie costumes

Those all come to mind.

14. As for the “dead is dead” factor in comics, Cyber: the Wolvie villian has been dead since what Wolv #100, so since Bucky is back….he ‘s there with Uncle Ben now. You guys remember him?

Yep I remember him. I recall Genesis (Cable’s son Tyler) killed him. Cyber was broken out of prison by the Dark Riders, who tricked him into a chamber containing “mutant deathwatch beetles”, which devoured the flesh from Cyber’s entire body, beginning with his exposed face and eating the rest from the inside out. Cyber’s adamantium skin, which had remained untouched, was then used in an unsuccessful attempt to re-implant adamantium into Wolverine’s skeleton

15. What slums or ghettos are the worst in comics? Madripoor? Gotham? Bludhaven?

Well I can go top 5 in Marvel. Daron you can handle Dc.

1. Hells Kitchen
2. Madripoor
3. Yancy Street
4. Genosha (now)

Damn ok top 4. Last one is blank in my mind right now.

Well I can’t list them in any order, but the main ones off the top of my head from DC are:

Gotham
Bludhaven
Suicide Slums

16. WTF, Wolverine is an, dare I say it, an “”??? Say it aint so

Well Wolverine likely don’t believe in god but believes in the afterlife. I mean he came close to Death once and saw Illyana’s ghost if you recall. She was his angel. I mean it’s Wolverine here. We both know he has to see stuff to believe it for the most part.

Did I miss something with that question? Though I have to say I’m impressed Jim knew what he was talking about, even though with the answer, I still don’t know what the hell the question was”¦

Thanks guys, same time next week, and take care.

Welcome Cory. You too.
