David Gray – Life in Slow Motion Review

Link: David Gray

The Inside Pulse:
I haven’t heard word one about David Gray since he released his song Babylon, with Dave Matthews blessing I checked it out and loved the White Ladder album, and then I promptly forgot about him. Life in Slow Motion is similar, it’s a beautiful album but ultimately fairly forgettable. Lyrically he’s head and shoulders above most other singer/songwriters around these days. He makes James Blunt look like an amateur chump. The problem is he’s more or less a one note wonder, there isn’t much variation from one song to another. It’s all solid and there are a couple absolutely spectacular songs but it’s far from a life changing experience. There’s not much to dislike about this album and I’m sure it will appeal to a fairly wide audience, but there’s also not much that makes it stand out either.

Positives:
Beautiful songwriting, well crafted songs, better than most in the genre

Negatives:
Fairly repetitive songs, and nothing particularly new or exciting

Cross-breed:
A bit of James Blunt, a bit of the Beatles and a bit of Rufus Wainwright

Reason to buy:
If James Blunt is too whiny for you, but you still like a sensitive british singer. Or alternately if James Blunt whet your appetite and you want more you should definitely check this album out.
