Ultimate Marvel Handbook #5 (160)

Hello everyone and welcome to another addition of the Handbook. I’m Jim Trabold of course.

And I of course am not.

Hello Daron good to see you as always. I’m good, how are you

I’m doing well, at least the power has been on for a little while now”¦

Very interesting. Well we have good week ahead. Some really good comics came out this week as well, I’m going to push them later.

Indeed, well let’s get to it shall we, before I lose power again.

a friend of mine has just let me borrow the PAD captain marvel series. i’ve got through the 1st 10 issues(once they got re-numbered when he went insane) and was wondering how powerful is genis? he seems unbeatable. don’t give me spoilers though because i still have to read the rest of the series.

Thanks to his Titanian Eternal mother, Genis was more powerful than his father, although he still needed the Nega Bands to make full use of his abilities until Zemo made some adjustments to his body.

Initially, he could only use the Nega Bands for flight, energy blasts and transport to and from the Negative Zone. After his bonding with Rick, his latent Cosmic Awareness, inherited from his father, was activated. His link to another dimension was redirected from the Negative Zone to the Microverse.

After his bonding, he began to experiment more with his abilities. His experiments culminated in full access to his Cosmic Awareness to see things on a large scale. Originally, he had only used it for a localized focus, which only allowed him to realize exactly what he needed to know. When his powers grew, he was promptly driven mad. While insane, he returned from the dead, raised Rick Jones from the dead (noting that he could only properly raise him because of their bond), puppeteered other dead bodies, created holograms, empowered an alien serial killer and manipulated his powers in many other ways.

After Zemo accidentally linked him to other areas of time, Genis absorbed the Nega Bands and developed teleportation-based powers that could transport him through both time and space.

In other words, he’ pretty fricken powerful. Now my question is, if this friend of yours is a good friend why didn’t he give the first series, you know the one that was actually a good read? The book promptly went down the crapper after the renumber.

Cory emails

What’s good, fellas? Cory here, alright ramblers, let’s get rambling! (trying to keep it at a minimum for the 198 files)

Hey Cory. Doing well here. Oh and don’t blame yourself. I cut it for length and also because I wanted to read the latest issue of the Official Marvel Handbook A-Z.

Agreed, Jennifer Connelly (Betty Ross) is HOT! Did you guys see her “major boobage” in Career Opportunities (1991)? So was Kerry Washington (Alicia Masters) in She Hate Me, as a lesbian with the chick playing Callisto in X-3.

I guess I’m going to have to run to blockbuster later and get some movies.

*Shudders*

1. I just put 2 & 2 together ( I got 4, btw) Remember how 90% of fans think that Black Panther would be best played by Wesley Snipes…hmmm…and how Storm is already played by Hally Berry. And now that Marvel now has it like, set for the former lovers to get married. But if you guys aint already hear the rumors…but Halle allegedly has unilateral hearing loss (80%) in one ear, thanks to her former flame in the early 90’s…yup that would be Mr. Snipes, did any of you guys ever notice this?

Nope never noticed it. Don’t think Marvel did it to put Halle with Wesley in the minds of fans. But very resourceful information. I didn’t know that hearing loss thing. I did recall Halle and Wesley Snipes thing though.

And seeing as Marvel has yet to cross any of their movie franchises over at all, I don’t think it’s something they’ll ever have to worry about.

2. Speaking of lovers, didn’t Sabretooth have a lady named Birdie?, or something like that? I know she is dead, (he probably killed her, idiot!), but what was the history of their past relationship? I just remember seeing her when The X-Men, mostly Meltdown, were trying to “help” him after Wolverine gave his a$$ that “glow”.

Birdy was hired by Sabretooth to provide him with what he termed “the glow,” a psychic blast that satiated his bloodlust and numbed the pain of his suppressed memories, allowing him to control himself for short periods. As she had no offensive abilities, Birdy often carried a big gun and drove the getaway car. She was with Creed when the Hand revived Omega Red and again when he was being hunted by assassins. For reasons still uncertain, perhaps simply fear, Birdy betrayed Creed to the Tribune. However, when she was found by Creed shortly thereafter, he came after her as if to kill her but did not. When Creed finally confronted Tribune, the mastermind behind the hits, Birdy came in to help. She linked Sabretooth’s and Tribune’s minds, and Sabretooth discovered that Tribune was his son Graydon, leader of the Friends of Humanity. Unfortunately, Graydon then stabbed Birdy to death in order to torture his father and drive him nuts

I think Birdy was dead before he went to the X-Men. If I recall right Chuck took him in to help him because he needed a telepaths help to deal with his issues. With Birdy gone he no longer had that

3. Did either of you guys ever notice what poor fashion sense Wolvie has, in the comics & movies? That shirt Wolvie had on in the end of X-2 was T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E!

HAHAHAHA You go tell him that. See what he does to you. I do know that Logan has an odd choice of clothing at times. Heck he’s Canadian what do you expect? His normal fashion sense is a lumberjack shirt, a cowboy hat and some jeans. That don’t count the number of different uniforms and other looks he’s taken. But don’t tell him I said that.

Ouch. It’s a good thing we don’t have any Canadian readers”¦or do we???

4. Who the hell are: Aria, Helen Bach, Blair, Caley Blair, Cyndi, Rose Carling, Sung Li, Lynx, Mai, Matriarch, Mary McKenna, Janice, Kayla, La Bandera, Cassandra Lathrop, Pink Lady, Serra, Sparrow Hawk, Stacey, Natsu Teshima, Ai-Chia Wong—Wolvie’s lovers?

Ok now I can finally reveal some identities:

Aria: A Zennan woman who got a lot closer to Logan than he cared for – as in, inside of his skull close. She literally shanghaied his body to take it back to a prison world to free the various alien races being held by The Collector.

Helen Bach: Helen is one of those ‘could-have-beens’. Logan got a ‘real’ job for awhile and Helen was the foreman on the construction site in question. Insecure about her own looks, she was intimidated by her first look at Jean and Ororo. She had been on her way in to talk to Logan, but turned and walked away after seeing the pair

Caley Blair (Blair I had twice by accident): curator at the New York Museum of Cultural History, met Logan when he came to a special showing called “Armor and Weaponry of Ancient Japan”. Start to finish, their relationship lasted eight weeks and was covered by real-time/flashbacks in Wolverine/Punisher – Revelation

Cyndi: I thought I covered her with Bunny. Two women that Logan met on his journeys

Rose Carling: Logan and Rose first came in contact when she was just a child and Logan was on a mission to ‘meet and greet’ Rose’s father, a scientist who wanted to come work for Landau, Luckman & Lake.

Sung Li: San Francisco, 1982. Logan was at that time living with Sung Li in an apartment in the Chinatown district.

Lynx: was introduced in an eight part story in Marvel Comics Presents called Passion Play. Odds are that Lynx was never given a real name. She was born without an immune system – who her parents were and their fate is unknown. Lynx was raised in a germ-free environment, but the scientists entrusted to raise her decided to make her whole life into an experiment to see what would happen to a child raised with no human contact whatsoever. At age 19, another scientist decided to make her the subject of another experiment – testing out a serum capable of curing every disease known to man.

Logan saw way too much of himself in the young woman – another soul subjected to alterations without any regard for her as an individual. He made it his own personal crusade to make sure she got the chance to live life outside of the labs.

Mai: Mai met Logan in a ten part story in Marvel Comics Presents called Black Shadow! White Shadow!. Logan had traveled to Hong Kong to help an old friend of his, Linn Chow. Linn knew Logan from Madripoor and when her husband left and took her kids with him, Linn asked ‘Patch’ to help her.

Matriarch: Ok this one might just be the non-cannon on my list: Marville – ‘Originville’, around 50,0000 BC. Top wife (yes – more than one) of Wolverine – called only Matriarch in the tale.

Mary McKenna: Logan helped her 50 some years ago and helped he later as well.

Janice: The lovely double-agent whose death also heralded the break-up of Team X. Her exact relationship with Logan is murky, but considering he was used to Creed killing folks on a regular basis, he seemed to take her death a lot harder than if she were just part of their mission. Logan also was the one that saw to Janice’s burial

Kayla: Kayla encountered Logan in a six part story in Marvel Comics Presents called Brothers In Arms. Logan was on the isle of Koma Koi for a little R&R – no such luck. He was sitting on the beach minding his own business when he saw Kayla running.

La Bandera: They are inspired, this band of men once political prisoners of the dictator Caridad. So too are their unlikely allies… wave after wave of the jungle’s finest warriors. And she has done it. Despite dissident views, tribal factions… she has inspired them to be an army. Even Enrique, a doubter by nature, grins at the prospect of victory. And their inspiration in turn feeds her. She draws upon it, turns it to energy, and, with her staff to channel it, lets it explode as a physical force. She is La Bandera. She is a mutant with the ability to inspire. And in all her young life.. it has never worked more wonderfully than tonight.

Cassandra Lathrop: Agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. She developed an interest in Logan that developed into an obsession. How long will she stay around Logan? Well, she’s already outlasted many featured in this section, so time will tell.

Pink Lady: From the Wolverine/Doop team-up – The Pink Mink.

Serra: Lured to come to the Himalayas by dream visions, the intent being for the outsider to infuse new blood into the bloodline via Serra.

Sparrow Hawk: ‘Wild Frontier’ story arc, a Blackfoot maiden named She Watches the Sparrow Hawk — or just Sparrow Hawk for short. She died in an attack by a demonish monster the tribe called Uncegila.

Stacey: Again non-cannon as much. a waitress in a rundown diner named Babel’s. Cable, one of our boys from the future, recognizes her, calls her by name and seems a bit surprised to see her

Natsu Teshima: X-Men movie prequel: When Logan ran into Natsu in Vancover, Canada – they had one thing in common. Amnesia. This is also the point where Marvel now says that Logan re-discovered he knew Chinese.

Ai-Chia Won: A charming young woman Logan met during a visit to Hong Kong daughter of film producer Wong Tak-Wah – Logan enjoyed her company enough that the short trip to Hong Kong was extended to four months as he and Ai-Chia both dated and aided her father in script work on his latest movie.

He didn’t somehow bag Zealot, from WildC.A.T.S did he?

Not that I know of but I wouldn’t have blamed him if he had.

5. “Who do you guys think would make for the best/most interesting significant other for the ol’ canucklehead? I for one thought that either Psylocke or the White Queen would have made for an interesting couple with Wolverine. I think Betsy more. I think Emma is a whore. But I guess we’ll see about Emma in Astonishing. Personally, I think he should hook up with Polaris. Talk about being the submissive in that relationship…”

That Polaris line is classic, that chick is LOCO. lol. I prefer Psylocke over Emma. Though Emma was with Sebastian Shaw, so she has a obvious thing for sideburns, lol. She now seems way too “Basic Intinct” now. I say Elektra.

Can I do a top five? Lol. I’ll do one anyway.

1. Silver Fox (shame she’s dead)
2. Jean (I still bet he’s Rachel’s dad not Cyc)
3. Mariko (again sorry she’s dead)
4. Yukio
5. Psylocke

3 of your top 5 pics for Wolvie are dead. I think that says something very unflattering for you Jim.

7. Daredevil was in the hospital in 164 after a fight with the Hulk. That’s right the Hulk. Why & how did whoever win, win?

I would say the Hulk won. Poor Matt was stuck in the hospital. So that one went to Hulk

8. “I believe he asked if DD shot the Punisher, not the other way around.” Indeed I did, that true?

Your right I read that wrong.

Daredevil shot the Punisher to prevent him from killing drug-dealer Peter “Hogman” Grunter. DD 183 again for this one. Matt had to do it.

9. A notice about Wolverine’s movie: The plot of this film is said to be about Wolverine’s continuing search to discover his past. Since the film is slated for a 2007 release the plot will most likely focus on the current story arc Wolverine: Origins & Endings. So what do you guys think about this possibility? Did I call it?

You called it. I like the idea myself. I like how Wolverine: Origins & Endings is going in Wolverine too. I mean we’re finding bits and pieces out. Not everything. I want that to be done in the movie to. Take it slow and find bits and pieces out as he goes. Silver Fox and Sabretooth should be in there too.

10. Why so much doubt about the crossovers with other companies, especially DC?

I’m guessing you don’t know about the Marvel/Dc feud at the moment. Let’s take you to Wizard World Chicago last year:

Brian Bendis with Mike Oeming came up with a crossover idea. Daredevil/Batman. Both would star together in two books. One done by Marvel the other DC. The whole thing was mapped out and was set to be announced.

Paul Levitz (EIC of DC) he said no. He said he wasn’t interested in working with Marvel because of his feelings towards Joe Q.

There was even a petition made but until Joe is gone as Marvels EIC DC will not allow another crossover.

As a side note, that was actually 2 years ago in Chicago”¦I was there.

11. What was the purpose of having Marrow defeat Wolverine in U. X-Men a while back? Remember that one?

It was the editors and writers of X-Men at the time idea of a way to gain Marrow some popularity and gain some way to edge Wolverine. Even though it gained her some for a short time it didn’t last to long.

12. Edge does suck, but you guys would’nt believe what Marvel heavyweight Vin Diesel was srumored to play. Info on this crap later though.

I know I know. Wait you didn’t ask though did you? I do know though. But I’ll let you tell everyone later.

Well that was very informative”¦

13. First Cyclops, now Wolverine. DC and Bryan Singer taking all the Marvel fellas with em to the Superman set, huh? Wolvie as Papa Kent, wow?! Since we may never get that “official” Wolverine/Batman tag team I guess we gotta settle for The Prestige(2006). Starring Sir Michael Caine (Alfred), and directed by Chris Nolan.
Plot for length purposes.

Hmmmmmm Well you can tell Brian Singer likes people he knows well over others. He can tell they know how to act. I don’t blame him I just wish he’d leave the X-Men cast alone. Also thanks for the link. Very interesting plot for the movie to

“You know…I’m starting to long for the days of Superman picking up Thor’s hammer…” lol, classic!

From the WWE/comic movies ideals, to the love triangles, to Wolvie’s sex life, am I asking too many debatable questions, good questions, or just being an honest fan? I mean I could ask a lot of Gambit questions, right Daron?

You could, but then I’d have to cut them all out.

~Fin

Don’t let Daron get you down Cory. I look forward to your emails every week. You throw in a little everything. I really enjoy it. Let’s me think and go all over the place. You give me a lot to think about. Don’t worry. Even the WWE, movies and love stuff don’t bother me. Just keep writing keep my mind active.

Sam emails

howdy-

Hey Sam

Props on the new format, i enjoy seeing more visuals and it was quite entertaining seeing so many gals pining over Wolverine”¦ A couple of random thoughts/questions:
* I was recently reading a JSA tpb regarding the Spectre/Hal Jordan – i know this isn’t the DC handbook, bear with me – and they related the origin story of how Jim Corrigan became the Spectre. What struck me was that the Spectre showed up like he’d been hanging out w/ Hulk Hogan and Barry Bonds, muscled-out the the max and looking more like a pro wrestler than a ghostly vengeance dude. My (admittedly long winded) question is this: how many heroes in Marvel-land have less than atlas like physiques? I know it can be dependent upon the artist and his/her personal style/fetishes, but are there characters out there with slight builds who yield great powers and use them in a positive manner? bigger is better, and our fave characters are larger than life, but are there non-pro wrestler looking folks that are great superheroes (other than kids! i’m hoping for a tall, skinny guy that can vanquish evil thru means other than brute force:) ?

Hmmmmm well Peter Parker old school days was a skinny runt. Still isn’t that big and muscle bound. The same goes for Matt Murdock. They look better in uniform. It’s those damn tights. There are some others that come to mind:

Nightcrawler
Henry Pym
Reed Richards
Tony Stark

I bet I can go on for a long time. It’s mostly artist that make the characters look more built then they are.

* I don’t like Iron Man. Never did. So you can guess whose side I’m on w/ marvel’s upcoming civil war. Anyways, I’m wondering when tony stark ‘became’ an alcoholic – in the beginning he had to wear the armor because it kept his heart beating, or some such thing – in thinking about Iron Man it seems like the alcoholism might have been added to create a dimension to Tony Stark that further developed his character. so, when did iron Man become ‘too many martini’s-man’ and did that development jive with his origin, or was it more of an add-on to what had come before?

Stark was developing a serious dependency on alcohol. The first time it became a problem was when Stark discovered that the national security agency S.H.I.E.L.D. had been buying a controlling interest in his company in order to ensure Stark’s continued weapons development for them. (Iron Man 119)

At the same time, Stark’s business rival Justin Hammer hired several supervillains to Attack Stark. At one point, the Iron Man armor was even taken over and used to murder a diplomat. Although Iron Man was not immediately under suspicion, Stark was forced to hand the armor over to the authorities. Eventually Stark and his personal pilot and confidant Jim Rhodes tracked down those responsible, although Hammer would return to bedevil Stark again. With the support of his then-girlfriend, Bethany Cabe, his friends and employees, Stark pulled through these crises and, for the moment, overcame his dependency on alcohol.

We saw him drinking somewhat but it got more out of hand in the 70s. Tony has had a few problems at times during the years.

* Recently read the Exiles ‘Legacy’ tpb, featuring a story in which Black Bolt (of the Inhumans, with the voice that explodes) uttered “MASADA” and therefore blew a bunch of stuff up. Any idea how many other words Black Bolt has uttered, and the repercussions?

Let’s go threw a few times:

Once during a Kree invasion led by Maximus

He used it in the House of M on Apocalypse to defeat him

Ultimate Black Bolt spoke and destroyed the city

I believe there where a few more but I can’t recall all of them

X3 looks rough, but hope springs eternal.. Thanks guys, and if this gets into the Handbook would you mind saying ‘hi’ to my better half Audra? cheers

Sure thing, Hi Audra.

There’s nothing Jim won’t do for an email”¦

Jason emails

You mention that Marvel and Top Cow are going to be doing some more cross-overs. Any clue as to which characters? Which characters would you like to see cross-over? Thanks a lot.

Let’s go back to a convention not long ago. Marvel press release:
Marvel Comics has announced a joint publishing arrangement with Top Cow Productions under which Top Cow artists, inkers and colorists will team up to illustrate 36 Marvel comic books over the next two to three years. The Top Cow team will work from scripts supplied by Marvel, which will feature Marvel superheroes. The first collaboration between the two companies involves Amazing Spider-Man #530 and #531, which will be penciled by Top Cow’s Tyler Kirkham. Marc Silvestri, Top Cow’s founder, will illustrate a six-issue series by Marvel’s kingpin scribe, Brian Michael Bendis, and Silvestri will draw eighteen covers for Marvel under the terms of the deal, which also gives Top Cow the right to produce (with Marvel’s approval) eight crossover issues featuring Marvel and Top Cow characters.

This publishing arrangement, which has been rumored for some time, will provide Marvel with access to excellent talent, and will give Top Cow artists considerable exposure with the broad Marvel audience. The deal should make it easier for Marvel to expand its line without suffering a loss in artistic quality, and the crossovers could potentially boost the sales of the Top Cow characters involved

So that’s what we know for now. I’ll keep you updated or Jamie at Marvel News and Views will.

Jaypee emails

Hi Jim and Daron

Hope you’re both well.

Hey Jaypee. Doing well here.

As am I.

Quick question from me,

Which characters from the Marvel Universe would you have on your all-star team and (if you’ve got time) could you give your reasons for picking them.

Many thanks

Hmm we’ve done this a few different ways but sure let’s do it again. With your All-star idea:

Captain America (leader. The best Marvel has)
Wolverine (He is the best at what he does after all)
Mister Fantastic (inventor and gadget guy
Invisible Woman (a strong female lead)
Silver Surfer (cosmic scale threat)
She-Hulk (Super strength of the group)
Spider-Man (humorous gagman)
Black Panther (the strong African member)
Storm (his queen and another strong female lead)
Dr Strange (Magic user of the group)

Hmmm, no restrictions on size or anything? My team would be based on what interests me, and well rounded team, not necessarily the “most powerful” but maybe the more useful.

1) Captain America: There really isn’t a better leader/inspiration for a team.

2) Havok: Second in command and team powerhouse in energy manipulation – near cosmic level energy output.

3) Songbird: Adds to interesting team dynamic by being an ex-criminal, hard sound powers are very useful in protecting team members and bystanders as well as offensive capabilities.

4) & 5) Colossus & She-Hulk: My super strength duo and main hand-to-hand fighters. And does anyone else get a little giddy imagining Colossus throwing a human-form She-Hulk and having her change mid-flight for a Super-Shulky-Fastball-Special?

6) Nightcrawler: On top of being a great hand-to-hand fighter and swashbuckler (a great tag team partner for Cap in a scrape) he’s also good for espionage type missions and extraction.

7) Cannonball: Air support, and what better kind is there than am indestructible battering-ram? He also adds some needed speed to the team and extra crowd control.

8) Wasp: Janet’s biggest contribution is in her espionage abilities, but is also no slouch in a fight, plus she can fly, and on occasion grow as well as shrink.

There you have it, and two less characters than Jim.

The fighting tournament of 64

The Avengers region: 1. Captain America 7-2
vs.

Spider-Man (thanks to Amazing Spider-Man)
Black Bolt
Mister Fantastic

Other side (likely Cap’s side)

Pretty good stuff all around. I wish it could have gotten up sooner though”¦damn power outs.

Hope everyone enjoyed it.. How about I sign off first and then you can partner?

Good here goes:

Notes:

1. Marvel.com pollWho is your favorite Wolverine foe?

2. Digital comics Comics you can read online

3. Marvel is in the process of adding new bios and added a ton of new ones. Check them out here

4. As always your opinions on anything in the article or out on the shelves is welcome. After all you never know what type of response you will get.

5. Keep those emails coming and make sure to label them Marvel Handbook.

6. Marvel must reads of the week: New Avengers Illuminati # 1, Fantastic Four # 536, and X-Men Deadly Genesis # 5. I think that those books are the must of this week and plan on expanding this feature next week. I’ll give short synopsis of reviews with the feature. Hope everyone likes it.
