Hello everyone and welcome to another addition of the Handbook. I’m Jim Trabold.

I’ve had a good week here. Hope Daron has too. Daron?

Yo!

My week was okay, a little long, but okay.

Good to know. Let’s start though.

Thanks for the pleasantries”¦

so after reading alot of the “hook up” stuff lately i started to think. i asked a question a LONG time ago about colossus hooking up with a savage land native and i see from the column that wolverine has too. plus from what i have read they “might” have had kids with these natives. so are there any other savage land hook ups that have produced children, and has anything happened story wise with these?

Ah the old Savage Land love affairs. This should get interesting to say the least.

Colossus slept with both Nereel and Shakani. Nereel had a son named Peter with him
Wolverine slept with Ghack and had a son named Erista.

Kazar and Shanna the She-Devil are in the Savage land and married and have a son named Matthew.

Other Savage Land inhabitants:
Magneto spent years in the Savage Land so who can tell if he has any kids.
Sauron would be the same thing
Zaladine of course

So essentially what you’re saying is what happens in the Savage Land stays in the Savage Land?

well i guess my votes this week are for wolvie and taskmaster. plus i’d like to let daron know that i enjoyed the PAD cap marvel issues that i read, but since he has never steered me wrong before i will see if my friend has the earlier issues as well.

Votes noted.

As for Captain Marvel. I agree the first series done with Genis-Vell as Captain Marvel was ten times better. I thought it was funnier at times and had some great cosmic tales. I would suggest you go and get that one too.

Another good lead in for that series was Avengers Forever. Great read. One of my favorite Avengers stories.

The relaunch issues (at least in the beginning) weren’t bad, though I thought they got QUITE bad at the end, but the first series was just amazing.

A_Faceless_Name posted this one to make up for Gambette.

That’s pretty damn funny to me.

HA! Even Nightcrawler hates the Cajun! And who can blame him really?

Where did you and Daron get those interesting characters with the Big Heads? The ones from Daron’s “All-Star Team”?

Personally I like this site Not sure about Daron though

Yup, that’s where I got them from.

And yes, you do have Canadian readers. So lay off Wolverine’s fashion sense… I like plaid.

I personally apologize to my Canadian readers for that remark, Wolverine does wear the plaid though and lumber jack shirts because he is Canadian. So it does fit him. I think they look good on him. Heck it’s part of what makes him Wolverine

Very impressive backpedaling there, Jimbo. Very impressive.

Blake asked me

Jim & Daron, which top ten characters would you like to be killed off and stay dead?

ok Blake here’s my top ten. I’ll bet Gambit is on Daron’s list somewhere.

1. Agatha Harkness (I’m tired of that old hag)
2. Microbe
3. Speedball
4. Maggott
5. Gwen Stacy
6. Longshot
7. Sleepwalker
8. Madcap
9. Mesmero
10. Mojo

Isn’t Maggot dead already? Did he comeback? And a, Gwen Stacy too?

Anyway, my list (this seems familiar):

1. Gambit
2. Maggot (just in case he came back”¦)
3. Sage (What a god awful character)
4. Mojo
5. Longshot

Beadle posted

When did Chuck Norris become Cap?

Don’t you mean when did Chuck Norris become Cap?

Isn’t that what he just asked?

I mean really Cap is the best there is in many ways and Chuck Norris just copied what Cap did.

I’m kidding of course. This was just for fun for Beadle and the guys on the board for the Chuck Norris Facts gag going on

Colin emails

Good O’l Colin is a Canucklehead. So yes you do.

I’m writing to jump in on the Marvel Dream Team idea. See if we can’t start up a few weeks of debates.

Here goes:

Cyclops – Years of experience as a leader, and where’s the fun of everyone picking Cap as the leader?
Silver Surfer – Gotta love ‘im, and there’s no one better to fill the cosmic quota.
Daredevil – One of my all-time faves, and an awesome fighter, subterfuge user.
Namor the Sub-Mariner – Another fave, strong, flies, and can do water missions. Also, a bad attitude.
Vision – Useful, and downright cool. Tons of powers.
Archangel – Warren sucks without Apocalypse’s wings. Bring back brooding, blood-thirsty Archangel.
Iceman – Good for comic relief, and one of the cliched “potentially one of the most powerful beings on the planet”.
Jubilee – Every team needs a mascot, and her hinted psychic powers could be useful too.
Black Cat – Fills a few roles: stealth, fighting, and being a broad.
Gladiator – Best strong guy this side of Colossus, he flies, and he’s arrogant. And he rules.
Maverick – A soldier, has a defensive power, and is no-nonsense.
A bit of a big team, but what can you do.

Interesting. You basicly made a new X-Men team. A lot of mutants with some others thrown in. Not a bad team though.

Not bad”¦until Namor and Gladiator actually occupy the same room. Something tells me those two just won’t get along.

Cory emails

Sup guys. Cory here. No Gambit, relationship questions, or “highly” debatable questions either, plus short in length, so enjoy!

1. Marvel movies. Ok, we already talked about X-men & Spider-Man, so how bout the following movies. From a fanboy p.o.v, what criticism was given (good/bad) was given for:

a) The Hulk
b) The Punisher (2005)
c) Daredevil

Alright 1 by 1

Hulk: Almost perfect. I mean almost. You get rid of the last 30 minutes of it and it works. Remember the idea is the Hulk how he came about. His first battles where with the army. The father bit worked to. The Hulk dogs can go to. I hated those things.
They did a bad thing with Hulk’s father becoming like the Absorbing Man. That was just plain stupid. Killed that franchise.

Daredevil:

1. Ben Affleck boy did he suck as Daredevil. He needed to do a better job with it and really didn’t do that.
2. They covered to much at once. I think that could’ve been like two movies just in one. I would’ve got Frank Miller in and had him use the Man Without Fear limited to do the first movie. A younger Matt. You didn’t really care for Elektra when she died.
3. Just a bad idea for Kingpin. I know I’ll sound wrong for this but I wanted Fisk like in comics. The big white whale guy. I could go on with Daredevil

Punisher:

I can say nothing but Travolta? I liked Punisher. It’s getting a sequel for the movie. I enjoyed it because they made it very close to the real Punisher story

Wow, we pretty much completely disagree on all accounts.

Hulk: I thought was completely terrible”¦every inch of it and would not rewatch it if they re-worked the ending. The CG was so bad I was cringing the entire time. And don’t get me started on the Hulk-dogs”¦yeash. Worst Marvel movie since the original Punisher and Captain America movies.

DD: Now don’t get me wrong this movie was far from great, but was leaps and bounds better than the Hulk (see what I did there???) Personally, I think Ben did a decent job as DD. I didn’t think he was going to, but I thought he handled it as good as he could considering”¦ Same thing with Kingpin. I didn’t mind him being black, and thought he was well played”¦they just didn’t give him enough to do in the movie. On the other hand Colin, and Jennifer were TERRIBLE as Bullseye & Elektra, especially Bullseye.

Punisher: Haven’t seen it, no interest in seeing it. I can’t stand Punisher as a character and have no interest in wasting 2 hours of my life on him.

2. What’s is the big dispute with Joe Quesada being in charge at Marvel, the history, etc., and what has he done differently that has upset so many loyal fans???

Well Joe is a little weird. Not many fans really like him. He’s made some changes with Marvel over the years as EIC that have upset fans:

1. Screwed up most of continuity
2. The anti-smoking ban
3. Brought in Bill Jemas
4. Has been constantly late with his own books and others
5. Had some fights with Mark Waid and Peter David
6. He cuts titles too fast
7. Relying on its large stable of trademarked characters instead of hiring talented creators till later
8. Imposing a moratorium on the resurrection of dead characters at the beginning of his tenure
9. Restored old numbering (I like this one myself)
10. The Ultimate line
11. Comics has moved toward the aggressive marketing of trade paperbacks
12. The new feud with DC which prevents crossovers with the characters

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Jemas Quesada’s boss? That would mean, Quesada probably didn’t have anything to do with his tenure at Marvel.

And for what it’s worth, Quesada is a hoot at conventions! He made some rather boring panels the most fun events at the Chicago con a couple years back.

3. What heroes have been either “pariodied, copied, or loosely based” on to create another character??? (ex. Nighthawk= Batman) & (Warblade=Wolverine)

Squadron Supreme=JLA
The old Spider-Ham book had all the Marvel characters as animals
Moon Knight=Batman to some
Man-Thing=Swamp Thing
Sentry=Superman
Hawkeye=Green Arrow

I could likely go on for a long ass article. There’s been a lot over the years

Yeah this could take some time, but the entire cast of Cyber Force and Wildcats closely resemble some X-Men we all know and love”¦and in fact they resemble one another a lot as well :)

4. The Avengers (also known as The Avengers: United We Stand), was an animated series consisting of 13 episodes. It originally aired from October 30th, 1999 to February 26th, 2000, and was produced by Avi Arad and distributed by 20th Century Fox Television. This series featuring a somewhat peculiar team comprising of the Wasp, Wonder-Man, Tigra, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch, led by Ant-Man. The Falcon and the Vision were added to the roster in the opening episodes. Quite strangely, the characters best-known as Avengers hardly appeared at all: Captain America made only one appearance in episode #6; Iron Man only briefly in episode #8. Thor did not appear in the series outside of the opening titles.

Isn’t it common comicdom knowledge, that there has to be either 2 of 3 (Cap, Thor, or IM) in the lineup for it to work??? Even now in New Avengers, there are 2….that’s like JLA without either Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, am I right??? Most of all, if Cap isn’t there, who will lead??? He is the best in comics, PERIOD, at this!! Right?

Actually you are right. The Avengers are not the Avengers without at least 1-2 members of the big 3.

Iron Man wasn’t involved for the most part of him having a cartoon not long before that one. They couldn’t give Fox the rights to use Iron Man.

Cap made an appearance and should’ve been there full time. They where hoping on a second season: Scripts were written for a second season that would have included guest appearances by founding Avenger Thor, and the X-Men.

But I think they blundered it up before they could fix it. They needed Cap or someone big involved. Heck if they didn’t have a member of the big 3 make Hawkeye leader and make it the exact West Coast Avengers group

5. ANTI-HEROES. By now we all know what makes them, and who embodies them in comics. But I have a lil theory, so here goes:

In literature and film, an anti-hero is a fictional character that has some characteristics of a villain or an outsider, but is nevertheless portrayed somewhat sympathetically. In particular, an anti-hero may have enough heroic qualities and intentions to align them with the heroes in the readers’ minds. Anti-heroes can be awkward, antisocial, alienated, obnoxious, passive, pitiful, obtuse, or just ordinary; but they are always, in some fundamental way, flawed, unqualified, or failed heroes. When the anti-hero is a central character in a work of fiction the work will frequently deal with the effect their flawed character has on the other people they meet. Additionally the work may depict how their character alters over time, either leading to punishment, un-heroic success or redemption. There are 8 types. 1-THE VIGILANTE (Batman/Punisher). 2- THE DEVELOPING HERO (Conan/Han Solo). 3- THE DRIFTER or LONER (Wolverine). 4- THE FAILURE (Brain, from Pinky & the Brain). 5. THE FLAWED EVERYMAN (Homer Simpson/Al Bundy). 6- THE VILLAIN (Alex DeLarge, from A Clockwork Orange). 7- THE NOBLE CRIMINAL (Robin Hood). 8- THE MONSTER (Marv, from Sin City & The Hulk). My questions are:

a) what are the top 10 anti-heroes in comics, ever?

1. Batman (Yeah I have to say Batman)
2. Spider-Man
3. Wolverine
4. Han Solo
5. Daredevil
6. Punisher
7. Hulk
8. Deadpool
9. Namor
10. Nightwing

b) what hero or heroes started this trend?

Well I guess it starts with Batman but really become big in the 70′-80s more. It was mostly thanks to characters like Wolverine, Punisher, and more. Without them more and more of these types would not come out or be remade into them

c) Is Frank Miller the writer to thank for all this?

He’s got a lot to do with it.
He came in and did the Wolverine limited series
His Daredevil run
Elektra Saga
Of course he gave Batman his balls back in The Dark Knight Returns
There’s also Sin City.

So he has a lot a to do with it

Joy”¦something else to thank Miller for.

Thanks, and catch ya next week. Cory.

Must read picks of the week

Welcome to my new feature in the article. I won’t do full reviews but will tell you the top 3 Marvel titles out Wednesday. I’ll give you the covers with synopsis or solicits here with them.

1. Moon Knight #1 – Marc Specter used to talk to God. His god anyway. Khonshu — God of the Moon, God of Vengeance — saved Spector’s life, brought him to glory, made him a hero. Made him Moon Knight. But what Khonshu gives, he also takes away. And once he takes, he takes for good. Spector learned this the hard way, spiraling into madness, depression and worse. But he also remembers. Remembers what it felt like to jump off the top of a six-story tenement, cloak spread behind him. Remembers the feel of cartilage and bone exploding beneath his fists. Remembers the fun stuff. Now Specter wants back in the game. Will Khonshu hear his prayer?

Ever wonder where Moon Knights been and why fans love and missed him. This is why. This book a perfect come back

2. Annihilation: Silver Surfer #1 – The Annihilation Wave has targeted the ex-heralds of Galactus. Hunted by beings every bit as powerful as himself, the Silver Surfer must find a way to unite Galactus’ ex-heralds against a common foe! But, can even the united cosmic might of those who served Galactus stand against these powerful beings called Seekers!?

Taking Surfer back to space is perfect. I love Surfer. Always have and I enjoyed the way they did this. In fact I also liked seeing Air-Walker again to.

3. Young Avengers #11 – KREE-SKRULL WAR II Continues! Like the Avengers before them, the Young Avengers find themselves at the center of a KREE-SKRULL WAR. But the kids’ involvement in this intergalactic conflict pits them not only against both the Kree and Skrull armies, but against the NEW AVENGERS, as well. Plus, the secret origins of Hulkling and Wiccan — and the true nature of their ties to the Avengers –are finally revealed in FAMILY MATTERS

I like how they are connecting these younger Avengers to the Avengers past. Now we learn who the parents of Wiccan and Hulkling are. Very cool story

That should be it from my end. Hey Daron what you think of the article?

Good stuff. I have to say I’m little confused though. I’m still a bit behind on my reading, but how the hell did Spidey end up on the side of wanting Hero Registration? I would think he would be completely opposed to something like that”¦

Hope everyone enjoyed it myself. How about I sign off first and then you can partner?

But, that was all I really had to say”¦

Good, here goes:

Notes:

1. Marvel.com poll Who is your favorite Wolverine foe?

2. Digital comics Comics you can read online

3. CBR poll Did you check out the theatrical trailer to “X-Men: The Last Stand” yet? What did you think?

4. Marvel is in the process of adding new bios and added a ton of new ones. Check them out here

5. As always your opinions on anything in the article or out on the shelves is welcome. After all you never know what type of response you will get.

6. Keep those emails coming and make sure to label them Marvel Handbook.

That’s it from my end. Reporting from my corner of the Marvel Universe I’m Jim Trabold. Have a great week and see you at the comic shop.

*Sigh*

Reporting from”¦somewhere in the Midwest”¦this is Daron saying”¦Don’t do drugs. And if you are going to do them”¦use protection!
