The O.C. – Recap – Episode 3-20

Archive

So everyone gets their college acceptance and rejection letters this week. It’s time to think about their future and how their lives will change? Oh boy..this should be interesting. I have a feeling that either Seth or Summer won’t make it into Brown. As far as Ryan and Marissa and Berkeley. They will probably both make it now that they are not together. You always want conflict. So that is what will probably happen. Nothing left to it, but to do it! On with the show!

The O.C. – Season Three (Episode 20) – “The Day After Tomorrow”

We open up to Seth and Summer in Seth’s room. They try on their winter wear. That includes matching parkas and long underwear. Seth doesn’t think they should be all excited about going to Brown, since the letters don’t come until tomorrow. Summer is sure that both of them will get in.

Summer: “Oh please..with your dorky grades and my NASA level SAT’s..we are SO getting in!”

Seth thinks it’s just as likely that neither of them could get in or one of them could just get in. Seth thinks that maybe Summer will just get in and not him. Summer says if Seth is not going, she is not going. Seth says people dream about going to Brown. But Summer says that Seth dreams about going there. She just dreams about being with the one she loves.

Meanwhile, Ryan and Sadie make out some more. Silly kids. Sadie will be in town for 90 more days until the house is finalized. The future comes up about where Ryan is going to college. Sadie thinks that they should talk about it, but Ryan doesn’t want to. Ryan knows that whatever does happen..they will make it work, though.

Ryan leaves to get some water in the kitchen. Seth is standing in the refrigerator. Seth thought that getting into college would make life that much easier. Ryan says that’s not going to happen.

Seth: “There’s a cold front coming through!”

“California…here we come…right back where we started from…California…here we come! Oh!!”

We are back with more sisterly love from Marissa and Summer. They eat breakfast.

Summer: “Eating breakfast..are we? Does this mean we’re actually going to school today or do you just new the extra strength for all the small children you and Volchok plan to mug!”

Julie comes in to say it’s a big day for them. Their letters come today and she is sure Marissa is getting into Berkeley. Marissa says it’s time to go. Julie asks Summer how worried she should be about Marissa. Summer doesn’t know as they don’t talk a lot anymore. Here comes Neil. He asks where Marissa is and Summer gives her an excuse. He says that Berkeley will be glad to have Marissa.

Sandy pays a visit to Dr. Griffin. He wants to know if he had anything to do with Matt’s beating. Matt hasn’t said anything, but Sandy says that if Griffin doesn’t resign as head of the board within 24 hours..he will do everything he can to take down Griffin!

The gang minus Marissa arrive at school and run into Taylor. Taylor is planning a “college sweatshirt bonfire”! Yay! She needs their help, but Seth and Ryan run away. Summer is left and Taylor wants to know where Marissa is. She was supposed to get the food. Oh..there is Marissa now.

She gets a phone call. It’s Volchok. Marissa tells Volchok her problems, which include college choices and Summer and her mom. Volchok says he has the drugs to ease her mind. She will come if Volchok can pick her up.

Ryan arrives at Sadie’s house. She says she can tell him whether he got into Berkeley or not. That just leads to more kissing and Sadie is sure that Ryan got into college.

Volchok comes to pick up Marissa and he wants some money to get beer. Marissa goes back inside the house and steals some money from her mom’s purse maybe. Ah..Evil Marissa..you have to love her. Oh wait..there is her letter from Berkeley. She opens it up and she got in! Yay! She responds by throwing it in the trash, though.

Seth opens his mailbox to get the letters for him and Ryan.

Summer gets her letter. She opens it and she gets into Brown! Yay!

Back to Ryan as he opens his letter. He’s in at Berkeley as well! Yay!

Now it’s Seth’s turn. He opens it up and NO! He didn’t get in! Boo!

Summer comes to the Cohen house and is greeted by Ryan. They both tell each other that they got in. They are excited. Here comes Seth. And he tells them that he got into Brown as well! NO Seth! Don’t lie! They all hug as we take a break!

We come back to see Seth talking on the phone with someone from Brown. He thinks they made a mistake by not letting him in. He wants to plead his case to them again. He is told that he has to wait until next year, though, which doesn’t please Seth at all. See what drugs do Seth? Just say NO!

And we see Sandy in the kitchen! But I can’t tell you what happened, because I get a local weather report! There is a tornado warning about 200 miles from me. Be back with you in a second!

I’m back and I missed what Sandy had to say. Hope it wasn’t important. Anyways we now see Volchok and Marissa in bed. Marissa is getting up to leave. She is going to school..in the middle of it. Volchok wants to know what she is doing tomorrow. It’s the “college sweatshirt bonfire”. Everyone wears the sweatshirt of the college they got into. Volchok is surprised she is even going. Marissa wonders if he can see Marissa in college. He doesn’t answer that. He changes the subject and wants to know if she wants to come with him and his friends to Baja, Mexico for the weekend to surf and smoke weed.

Summer bumps into Ryan and wants to know where Seth is? He doesn’t know. She has something for him. Ryan says she just can give it to him at dinner tonight. It’s a “Celebration Dinner” for all of them at the Cohen house. But Summer knows nothing about it, because Seth forgot to tell her. Why did he forget? Because he doesn’t want to celebrate. And why doesn’t he want to celebrate? He didn’t get into Brown. See how that all works. Anyways..Summer tells Ryan to give Seth this, which is a yank of the hair. HA!

Ryan finds Seth avoiding Summer. He tells Seth that he invited Summer to the dinner. Now Ryan wants to know what’s up? Seth says Summer would just dress him up like “Timberland Barbie” if she sees him. Seth quickly changes the subject and asks Ryan if he has told Sadie yet that he got into Berkeley. Nope. He says it’s hard.

Ryan: “What do you do when only one of you is going to college?!”

Seth: “Man..I wish I knew!”

Ryan goes to tell Sadie..scratch that..Sadie already knew Ryan got into Berkeley since he didn’t call her last night. She is happy for him. Now she wants to know what that means for them. Ryan says they still have the summer. He doesn’t have to leave until August. Ryan says he has been the happiest he has ever been with her the last few months. Sadie says she is still in Newport because of him. She is doing all of this to stay with him. And she would move to Berkeley with him..if Ryan wanted her to. Ryan does and it seems done. They are moving together.

Summer, with glasses and geeky attire, comes to the Cohen house. Seth joins her and his parents and he is stunned by her appearance. Summer tells him to get used to it. This is what she will look like for the next four years. Ryan and Sadie join them now.

Dinner time and Sadie wants to know more about Berkeley. Ryan tells everyone that Sadie is coming with him to Berkeley. Kirsten and Sandy don’t understand. They didn’t know she applied to Berkeley. She didn’t. Sadie tells them that her jewelry-making business can go anywhere and Ryan will be there. Sandy asks them when they decided this. Today. No one says anything until Summer says something.

Summer: “Well I think it’s great..finding the right person and then deciding to be with them..no matter what. That’s what life is all about..right?”

Silence again and Sadie thinks she needs to go. They say she doesn’t have to, but she feels awkward. Ryan walks her out.

Summer and Seth drive to Summer’s house now, and Summer asks what is wrong with Seth? He is being quiet. He says it’s nothing. Seth doesn’t understand what Ryan could be thinking about Sadie moving with him to Berkeley? He thinks college should be first. Summer thinks that being the one you want to be with..should come first. Seth doesn’t think that anyone at age 18 really knows what’s right. Summer says that she does know. And Seth has a pained look on his face. Summer gets upset and leaves. Seth tries to explain, but she is not listening. Time for a break!

We come back to see Julie wanting to talk to Marissa. She is not going to the “college sweatshirt bonfire”. Julie knows she has done a lot of wrong things to Marissa, but thinks she should still go to Berkeley. Marissa says it has nothing to do with Julie. Marissa just doesn’t see herself at Berkeley. Julie says that she still believes in Marissa and she deserves to go to Berkeley. Julie tells Marissa to not give up on herself. She wants this for Marissa. Marissa says she will think about it, and Julie is happy with that.

Ryan brings Seth some coffee in his room. Seth wants to know if Ryan talked to Sandy and Kirsten again about Sadie. He says no and thinks that telling them like that wasn’t the best of an idea after all. Seth says that at least Sandy didn’t have a heart attack at the table. That’s a plus. Ryan wants to know what happened after they left. Seth tells him that he and Summer had a “soul-crushing” fight about Brown. Ryan asks if Seth has talked to Summer about it. Not yet, but even if he did..he doesn’t think it would help. It’s complicated. Which brings Ryan to ask him if Seth really got into Brown or not?

Seth: “Did I get into Brown? Ryan..now who’s smoking pot? Listen to me..the only class that I have ever gotten less than an ‘A’ in was Gym. My essay on the loneliness of being Superman..made Mrs. Rushfield cry..so you know..argh..how did I not get in?!”

Ryan wants to know why Seth is lying about this. Seth says it’s for Summer. Ryan thinks she may notice when he is not there. Seth says that she won’t go if he is not going. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for her and he won’t take that away from her. Ryan says tell the truth and let her decide for herself.

Ryan meets Sadie for lunch. He invites her to the “college sweatshirt bonfire”. She says it sounds like fun. Ryan says he was sorry about the other night. Sadie thinks they may be right. They may need to think about this a little more before actually doing it. Sadie feels that a lot of people go to college to find themselves, and she doesn’t want to stand in the way of him doing that.

Ryan: “I feel more myself with you..than anyone!”

Sadie says those are some big words. Ryan is going to Berkeley and wants her to come. And it seems set again. They are both going.

Taylor speaks a foreign language to an Oriental man. Flirting with the man or something to get her food for the bonfire. Summer is with her and Taylor tells her to cheer up. Summer says that they have worked hard for this dream to come true and once it does come true..Seth doesn’t feel happy. Taylor talks about how men are like gorillas or something. Summer understands, of course. Seth is just trying to exert his “gorilla independence”. Right.

Sandy brings Ryan an old Berkeley sweatshirt. Is it that cold right now in California? Sweatshirts?! Anyways back on subject. Sandy tells Ryan sorry about the other night. He and Kirsten LOVE Sadie, he just thinks it will be a lot of work for him and Sadie. They will have to both get jobs to survive. Sandy said he was going to cover Ryan’s cost, but not Sadie’s. Ryan would never ask him to do that. They just didn’t have time to think about all of that. Now Sandy tells him a story about how he almost didn’t go to Berkeley, because he was scared. Ryan tells Sandy that he is not bringing Sadie along because he is scared. Sandy says okay and leaves. Ryan picks up the sweatshirt.

Volchok is getting ready to leave for Baja. He gets a call from Marissa and she can’t go. She tells him to call her when he gets back. He says sure..whatever. Hang up and neither of them look that happy.

Ryan comes to pick up Sadie. She has big news for him and he does too. Sadie says she could live in this “artist co-op” in Berkeley and sell jewelry. They both could live there together. Ryan says that is great. Ryan changes his mind about telling her the truth. He simply tells Sadie that Sandy and Kirsten are fine about them. She says that is awesome. About time for the bonfire now.

Seth comes to Summer’s house to tell her the truth, but she is not there. He looks around her room and sees pictures of them together and being in college together..happy. Time for another break!

We come back to see that Summer is unhappy. She wants to know if Seth called. Marissa is right across the room and she comes in to talk to her. She wants to know if everything is okay with them. Summer tells her not to worry about it. Marissa says she is sorry about the way she has been acting. She wants Summer to give her a chance. Summer then compares Seth to Gollum from Lord of the Rings. The closer Seth gets to the fire, which is college, the more evil he becomes. Marissa says they will work it out. Summer wants to know what is going on with her. Marissa doesn’t know. She is trying to get back to the life she used to know, but it’s not working. Summer thought that Marissa could talk to her about that, though. Marissa says she is sorry and they make up. Dang..no more fighting sisters! Summer says that Marissa has to go with her to the bonfire. Marissa has no sweatshirt, though. Summer bought one for her months ago. She always believed in Marissa and that she would get into Berkeley. Marissa is touched.

Dr. Roberts comes to talk to Julie. Julie tells him that she doesn’t have time to be tested as great wife material or whatever. She is most worried about Marissa. Neil says that she passed and he is sorry that he put her through that.

Time for the bonfire! Everyone is here. Seth is here without his Brown sweatshirt, though. He is about to tell Summer the truth, but here comes Taylor and her big mouth to interrupt him. The foursome get a picture taken. Seth wants to talk to Summer. Taylor now drags Sadie away to get some food. That leaves Ryan and Marissa to talk. They both like each other’s sweatshirts. Ryan asks how Marissa is? She tells him that all of this may have been a bad idea. The sweatshirt, the party, and her going to Berkeley. Ryan says that eventhough they are not together anymore..he is still her if she wants to talk to someone. Marissa says thanks and it means a lot to her. Ryan leaves. Marissa looks around and sees everyone with their college sweatshirts. She doesn’t know if she fits in with them.

Taylor introduces Sadie to her Oriental friend. Hmm.. Now Sadie looks around and sees Ryan talking to other people going to college and doesn’t know if she fits in here as well.

Now Sandy talks to Dr. Griffin. He is not pulling out. Dr. Griffin says that he had nothing to do with Matt’s beating. Dr. Griffin controls all the money in this city. He knows a lot of people. He can give Sandy a lot of money for his project, if he cooperates.

Matt comes to see Kirsten. Matt’s face is still busted and all of that. He wants to talk to Sandy. He is not here. Matt begins to leave and tells Kirsten to tell Sandy that he stopped by. Kirsten wants Matt to go to the police to find out who did that to him. Matt knows who did it. He then says that he likes Sandy, but he wants Kirsten to tell him to just “quit this, because pretty soon it will be too late”!

Seth talks to Summer now. This is not easy for him. Summer says that if they go to college next year..he can’t keep freaking out on her like this. Seth tells her that he is not so sure he wants to go to Brown anymore. Summer is shocked by this. Seth doesn’t know if Brown is the right choice for him now. It’s right for Summer, though. Summer says they applied together. Do they apply somewhere else now? Seth says that Summer should still go to Brown. Seth will just go somewhere else. Summer asks if he really means this? Seth thinks it would be for the best. She is a little hurt by this. And..oh my god..NO! NO! NO! Summer says..”I guess we’re over then!” She walks away. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Ryan finds Sadie. She is alone. She is sure that Taylor and that Oriental guy were talking dirty with each other. And oh..stab in the heart..Sadie tells Ryan that she is not coming to Berkeley with him. She would be pulling Ryan away from this “other world” in college. He won’t be able to experience college like he should, and she doesn’t want to do that to Ryan. Sadie says she is leaving town now. It’s time for them to say goodbye. She tells him to keep in touch. She will miss him! Ouch!

Sandy comes home and Kirsten wants to talk to him. She says that Matt came by. She tells him to “quit this thing”. She saw what happened to her father and doesn’t want that to happen to Sandy. Sandy says that he will never become Caleb. He can’t just quit, though. Kirsten walks away from him and out the door. My god.

Now we get music and various images. This is usually by favorite part, but this one is too sad. It hurts. First, we see Summer in her room. She is tearing up everything with her and Seth in it. Now Marissa puts away her Berkeley sweatshirt. She then walks into Summer’s room and sees her crying. She comes to comfort her. Seth is walking alone now to the pool house. Ryan is sitting on the bed. Ryan lays on the bed now. Seth lays in the floor. And that hurts!

We are out until next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
