American Idol 5 – Recap – Episode 5-33 (4/18/06)

Archive

Kevin is off in England or France or wherever the hell is at now! So I take over this week! Hurray for all reading this!

Bucky is gone and everyone jumped up and down. At least I did..it was about time! So that just leaves us with seven people in this little competition. We have four guys and three girls. Ace, Chris, Elliot, Taylor, Paris, Kellie, and Katharine! Who will win? Anyone’s guess right now. My original prediction of Ace doesn’t look that good, but that’s why predictions are always wrong. Now who do I want gone next? Easy..Kellie! Get her dumbass off the stage..please! Anyways..lets get going with the show!

American Idol 5 – Episode 33 (“Magnificent Seven”)

Credits…

Ryan Seacrest welcomes us to the show. He says the pressure is on! He introduces the judges, but for some reason the camera shifts from Randy to Paula and then to Simon. Ryan didn’t have time to announce Paula’s name. Hmm..could it be a sign? A sign that you know who that drunken lady is already!

Tonight’s theme is songs from “The Great American Songbook”! Whatever the hell that means. Oh..these are songs from the mid-1900’s that Rod Stewart covered recently. And they get help from Rod Stewart as well! Yay! Lets take a look at Hot Rod’s career and him interacting with the contestants. Fast-forward Mr. TiVo!

It’s time to get serious!

Our first performer is Chris Daughtry. He is singing “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong! Chris says that people will be surprised by this choice. This is no rock song. He can’t belt out this song like usual.

Not that bad actually. Something a little different from him and I liked it a lot. This guy can sing anything.

Rating: 8.5/10

Randy – You just slayed them! There’s a sensitive side to Chris. It was the bomb!
Paula – Mumbles a bit, but basically says that he is “in it to win it”!
Simon – Takes a little credit for that performance. He said that Chris needed to change his style a bit and he did. A great performance!

Ryan says that Chris got rid of the eye makeup this week. Chris added that he lost some of his beard as well!

Paris is up after the…

Ad Break…

Next is Paris Bennett. She had a good Easter. Ryan jokes that Simon was the Easter Bunny at his house. Paris is comfortable with this category of songs. Her mother cries every time she sings. Rod says that she is great for 17! She is singing “These Foolish Things” by Nat King Cole!

This song fit her voice well. Her singing voice is definitely older than 17. So this was a good song for her. Did a great job!

Rating: 8/10

Randy – Greatest night ever! Every note in tune!
Paula – Reminds us why we fell in love with you in the first place!
Simon – Stylish..you talk like Minnie Mouse and then sing in a “grown-up” way. Terrific!

Ryan wonders what is up with Simon. Randy thinks he is drunk. He is WAY too happy!

Taylor is jamming after the…

Ad Break…

On the stage now is Taylor Hicks. Ryan talk about a show that is not “taped” on another network that did a parody of Taylor over the weekend. That would be Saturday Night Live..I believe. Taylor thinks they did a great job. They didn’t do the “clap”, though. It didn’t hurt his feelings at all. Taylor thinks this is some great music. Rod says that Simon was wrong about Taylor. It is not just singing..it’s the performance as well. Rod says you have to “grab the audience by the **bleep** (balls)”! HA! Taylor is singing “You Send Me” by Sam Cook!

Another good song choice for him. He likes Sam Cook and it fit well with his voice. No major problems or anything. Pretty good.

Rating: 7.5/10

Randy – Blown away! Everyone is in their element! Put own self into the song! Hott! Kept it real!
Paula – You are finally in the zone to go the distance. Best take on that song! “Soul Patrol” is on fire now!
Simon – Started slow and lame, but then became magic!

Elliot and Kellie are up after the…

Ad Break…

Next is Elliot Yamin. He grew up listening to these kinds of songs and likes them a lot. He will be singing “It Had To Be You” by Frank Sinatra. Rod says that Elliot has a “great set of pipes”.

The song was good for her voice. It didn’t blow me away or anything, but it was good. Will the judges like it?

Rating: 7/10

Randy – Everyone is relaxed and singing good. Very nice. Good song choice!
Paula – Perfect song choice for him. “In the zone”! Like everyone else.
Simon – A good vocal, but the performance lacked a degree of personality. Slightly concerned for him, because of that.

Ryan asks if they are all watching the same show? Paula says that Randy and herself are. Randy says that anyone can go home after any song they sing. Doesn’t understand what Simon meant by personality, since he has none. Ryan hypes up Elliot some more!

Moving on and up next is Kellie Pickler. Rod says she is a “firecracker”. She plays dumb as usual. Please get this over with. She is singing “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” by Ella Fitzgerald!

I didn’t like this at all. Too whiny and boring! Hopefully this is the last song she sings on this show! Lets see what the judges think, though.

Rating: 3/10

Randy – She knows that she butchered it. Pitchy in spots. Tough song to sing.
Paula – She says the fashion was good. And yeah..nothing of note.
Simon – Boring song. Didn’t suit her that well. Could had just done the “bewildered” part.

Kellie agreed that she didn’t do that well. Way to telegraph things! Ryan tries to save her and get a few votes for her!

Ace (my god..where’s his hair?!) is up after the…

Ad Break…

Ace Young is on the stage now! He is singing “That’s All” by Nat King Cole maybe! Rod gave him a “stamp of approval”. He said that Ace was “brilliant”!

Ace decided to “suit up” tonight and I liked that! As far as the song, well it was okay. Nothing great or anything. He sang it pretty well. Not the best tonight and not his best, though.

Rating: 6/10

Randy – Worked it out in the end. Falsetto is his money!
Paula – Loved the new look! Magical night! Great!
Simon – Wasn’t bad. A little bit nasally in the middle, but a charming performance.

Ryan wonders if that hairstyle hurts. Nope says Ace. He didn’t cut his hair, by the way. It’s just pulled back into a ponytail.

One last performance after the…

Ad Break!!

Last one and it’s Katharine McPhee! She had lots of song choices, but she ended up picking “Someone to Watch Over Me” by Ella Fitzgerald!

A little too slow for me, but she sang it well. Good choice for her, in my opinion. I could be wrong, though. Lets find out!

Rating: 8/10

Randy – This is her element. Loved it! Excellent!
Paula – Falling in love with the essence of her again. Perfect song for her!
Simon – Made the others look like good amateurs! In a completely different league! Looked like a returning pro! Great!

Ryan calls it a “home run performance” for her! Hopefully..America won’t be dumb enough to put her in the “bottom three”!

Ryan wraps things up with the recap, and we’re out!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
