Leave Your Spandex @t the Door: Just 1 Page

Archive

Welcome to the 14th installment of the new Leave Your Spandex @t the Door! Unfortunately due to that pesky Easter holiday, no preview comics have shipped to the UK this week. This means of course, that you will have to live without Early Bird Reviews this week. Be brave.

Since I’ve spoiled Daron the past months with weekly and twice-weekly postings, I couldn’t just skip this week, so I’m going to give you a preview peek of my contribution to JUST1PAGE #4. JUST1PAGE is an annual UK anthology featuring just one page of art or a comics story from a variety of comics creators, both professionals and (in my case) amateurs. The proceeds from the sales of the issue and the auctioning of the original art go to charity. This yea’s charity is CHILDLINE, so everyone should pick up a copy when the book comes out in May and contribute to this effort.

The theme this year is the World Cup! Admittedly this gave me a lt of grief, as I am not a footie fan, and Greece isn’t a contender this year. Still I squeezed and squeezed my creative well, until I came up with:

Can’t you just hear DC’s lawye’s rustling about with glee?

For a sneak peek at the creative process (and how Photoshop can work wonders in hiding pencilling and inking inadequacies), here is the first grayscale “please I want to meet the first deadline” version of the sketch:

and here is the scanned inks of the page before Photoshop (notice the Eisner-worthy bit of hand-lettering on the side. Thankfully, the scanner couldn’t fit the entire A3 page):

You can learn more about JUST1PAGE on the official webpage of the 4th issue, and check out the other (much more) talented contributors here. JUST1PAGE #4 will be released in this yea’s Bristol Comics Expo in May.

Boom! Studios’ IN THE BLOOD #1 sells out

Record third sellout this year for new publisher

Los Angeles: IN THE BLOOD #1, published by Wizard’s Best New Publisher Boom! Studios, has sold out of its print run for both the main cover and the PREVIEWS EXCLUSIVE cover with artwork by Tim Bradstreet. Written by horror legend Steve Niles with interiors by THE GIFT artist Josh Medors, retailers and fans made short work of this new take on the werewolf legend.

“It’s exciting news,” Boom! Studios publisher Ross Richie remarked. “Add this to our recent sell-through on GIANT MONSTER #1 and #2, as well as the disappearing act that ZOMBIE TALES: THE DEAD #1 pulled, and it’s clear that Boom! Studios’ penchant for putting out quality horror comics has found an audience.”

A flurry of reorders will go unfilled on this new mini-series, as the higher-priced Previews Exclusive cover proved popular just like the regular edition. As a result, orders are being allocated and some retailers might not receive all the copies of this comic that they expected to.

IN THE BLOOD originates from the father of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, as Steve Niles, well known for putting vampires in the spotlight, turns his attention to that other popular movie monster, the werewolf.

With the new interest in Boom! Studios’ backlist, the publisher makes plans to carefully monitor overprints in the future. But with demand increasing, Boom! Studios hopes that they can keep pace with the company’s growth. “I wish we had more copies of this book to offer the fans and retailers who clearly want it” Richie said. “Since January, we’ve experienced a surge in reorder activity. I hope that retailers take note of the fan interest in our horror material, and get in some advance reorders for CTHULHU TALES #1.”

Since being awarded BEST NEW PUBLISHER by Wizard Magazine and nominated for the same award by DIAMOND COMIC DISTRIBUTORS for 2005, Boom! Studios has seen an increase in sell-through and initial orders. Selling through most of its outstanding backlist, Boom! Studios is having a record year.

Manolis Vamvounis
a.k.a. Dr. Dooplove

ah, the good old Dr Manolis, the original comics Greek. He's been at this for sometime. he was there when the Comics Nexus was founded, he even gave it its name, he even used to run it for a couple of years. he's been writing about comics, geeking out incessantly and interviewing busier people than himself for over ten years now and has no intention of stopping anytime soon.
