Gilmore Girls – Recap – Episode 6-19

Archive

Mrs. Kim’s Antique Store is closed for business due to Lane and Zach’s wedding. Lorelai arrives to show them the dress. Mrs. Kim receives a phone call, and upon her return seems too distracted to care. Until she hears Lorelai tell Lane that Luke will not be attending the wedding with her. Mrs. Kim practically tackles Lorelai as she’s walking out the door, and demands she bring a date – otherwise she’ll look like a tramp.

Lorelai: Lorelai Gilmore – disappointing mothers since 1968

Yale Daily News = Time Killer. Paris is babbling on-and-on about the pros and cons of tenure, and then girlfriends of Logan’s awful friends invite Rory to Costa Rica. She “politely” declines. Are we supposed to recognize them?

At the Dragonfly, we learn that Michel’s escorting Lorelai to Lane & Zach’s wedding. And he’s laying down the law: what she’ll wear, how much they’ll dance (a lot), etc. Christopher calls, and it’s a happy distraction for Lorelai. He’s all proud about buying Rory a Sidekick (extra-special fancy text messenger) and keeping his other daughter quiet in her room.

Rory shows up at the Kims to find Lane and Mrs. Kim frantically preparing for the arrival of Grandma Kim, a strict Buddhist who hasn’t been to the States in 45 years. You think Lane’s mom is strict…

Lane: I am simply the latest link in a chain of Kim women who hide their lives under floorboards

Lane’s bachelorette party doesn’t quite go as planned. American Gigolo and Richard Gere’s privates are playing at the cool movie theatre in town, but they get the starting times mixed up. Then they bump into Zach and the boys, realize their plans are a bust as well (Stars Hollow really needs a good bar) – and
both parties wind up in Brian’s aunt’s basement playing foosball. Could be worse, I guess.

Michel blows off Lorelai at the last second for a Celine Dion concert. What is the big rush on this wedding anyway? Why was it necessary for Luke to miss it? Oh, that’s right. He’s on a 10-day high school field trip. Christopher, of course, is more than game to fill in as Lorelai’s date.

Lorelai: An unmarried woman, alone, at a certain age, dressed the way I do – is apparently Korean for Jenna Jamison

A big blowout occurs between Mrs. Kim and her mother – who is in a cab and on her way back to Korea just in time for the mock-Buddhist wedding to end and the real church wedding to begin. A stampede ensues to the church: 58 Seats, 62 Koreans. That joke just went over my head three times now. Lorelai talks even faster than usual reminiscing when Rory and Lane first met. Christopher, of course, has little to add – but does mention Rory could be next. Just promise we won’t have to endure Paris’ wedding next season.

The ceremony is nice. I have no idea what’s going on with the warp-speed reception. Then I do. They’re rushing the non-partiers out. And as soon as Mrs. Kim’s generous friends and family depart – the Yummy Bartenders arrive.

Kirk asks Rory whether the Yummy Bartenders are up to snuff. Rory thinks they’re “yummy” enough, and then asks to be excused. Lorelai notices a picture of Rory and April on Rory’s camera. She’s visibly shaken, and starts drinking heavily to compensate. I must say, even though I’ve been against this storyline from the beginning – the reception looks like a whole lotta fun. Hep Alien reunites for a rousing take on the Monkees’ classic “I’m a Believer”. Brian and Rory’s speeches are very cute. Lorelai’s speech? Not so much. More like a train wreck. Who let her get up there in the first place?

Lorelai: It’s really hard to get married. Believe me, I should know…I’m not getting married. Not for me, it’s not in the cards…Hey, do you know what date I’m not getting married? June 3rd. Do not save the date

Christopher and Rory get Lorelai home safely, and there are two phone calls: Rory finds out that Logan’s been injured in Costa Rica. Then Luke for Lorelai.

Could this episode have been more rushed? Not any more rushed than the wedding itself. Didn’t Lane & Zach get engaged a few weeks ago? And they couldn’t have possibly crammed more into the final fifteen minutes…
