The Inside Pulse:
With a catchy name like World Leader Pretend, relevant to the times we are living in perhaps, as well as being a R.E.M. song title, how could I not choose Punches to give it a try? Punches is solid and World Leader Pretend’s major-label debut on Warner Bros. Records, a underdog fighter who delivers solid body shots to the competition and a left hook to the jaw that doesn’t miss.

Positives:
Keith Ferguson, the lead vocals and main songwriter of World Leader Pretend, has a voice destined for heavy rotation on radio, that is intense and beautiful as a good cup of coffee when you really need a ‘pick me up’ your day. A good, well-rounded album is when every song has a chance to be a hit record and none of the songs sound the same, and this is the case with Punches. “Bang Theory” is intense as a thunderstorm at a Cold Play concert and is the perfect song to represent what World Leader Pretend is.

Negatives:
The lack of lyrics accompanying the record and on their official web site for the listener’s reference was a disappointment. The placement of “Appaassionato” in the song order was questionable following a series slower tempo songs, it would benefit more either blending or fading into another song, or being left as a opening walk-on track when they play a song harder like “Big Bang Theory” or even “New Voices.”

Cross-Breed:
Coldplay, The Heavenly States, Collective Soul

Reasons to buy:
World Leader Pretend are not pretending to be rock stars, they are rock stars with their well-crafted release of Punches.
