The Movie

This movie, up until recently, was Adam Sandler’s best movie in my opinion. It is still his best comedy. Punch Drunk Love is his best overall piece of work. But I digress. Let us talk about The Wedding Singer.

Robbie Hart is the most popular wedding singer in town. A former lead singer of a hair band, he now rules the roost when it comes to wedding singers…and he lives in his sister’s basement. Julia Sullivan has just moved to town and is working with her cousin Holly at the catering hall Robbie has most of his gigs at. Julia is engaged to Glenn but feels he may never set a date. Robbie is about to get married to Linda, his love. Then Linda ditches him at the alter, leaving a note for Robbie’s sister to tell him about. This prompts the classic line “So it was a bad note.” Soon afterward Robbie helps Julia plan her wedding as he has been reduced to singing at Bar Mitzvahs due to his hatred of love. What happens when Robbie falls for Julia and finds out the truth about Glenn? I’ll leave that to you to enjoy.

The acting in this movie is perfect. Sandler and Barrymore have chemistry in this movie that is so strong they tried to replicate it, with less success, in 50 First Dates. Throw in a cameo by Billy Idol and this movie rocks.

Score: 8/10

The Video

Widescreen preserving the 1.85:1 ratio of the original theatrical version. Transfer is seamless.

The Audio

5.1 Surround Sound – No problems here, save for some 80’s music.

The Extras

A Backstage Look at The Wedding Singer on Broadway – …and we get to the entire point of this “Totally Awesome” edition of the DVD. This is a hard sell for a musical that will be hitting Broadway or may have already closed. Either way, it looks mildly interesting but not interesting enough for a new release of a DVD. But money grabs never cease.

80’s Mix Tapes – All the music tracks in the film and the scenes they correspond to. Hit play all and…WATCH THE ENTIRE MOVIE AGAIN.

Trailers – Hey, they had to advertise in 1998.

Score: 2/10
