The Weekly Pulse: TV's Second Wife

Archive

Not much to talk about to start off with. ‘American Idol’ is still going and going how I thought it would go. Paris is gone and Elliot is next in line. Basically..Chris or Taylor will win this things. My money is on Chris. However, I think that Katharine will sneak in there and be in the final two unless she sucks it up some more like the first song of this past week.

This is my first column after the “Best Show on TV” tournament. So I am back to discussing whatever I want to discuss. It’s dealing with the month of May and some cleaning. It’s like a riddle. Put it together and you get want? Don’t know the answer? Keep reading..it will all become clear.

But first..a look back at the week that was here at IPTV!

Seinfeld Quote of the Week

“You invite me over here for lunch, tell me you slept with Elaine, and then you tell me you’re not in the mood for details. Now you listen to me; I want details, and I want them right now. I don’t have a job, I’ve got no place to go, you’re not in the mood? Well you GET in the mood!”George

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Dora Malone stops talking about Terry from ‘Survivor’ for a little bit to talk about Cirie. Of course, she loves Terry so much that she has to talk about him a little bit. This week it’s just not ALL Terry! Change is good sometimes. See if you like this change?!

DeeDee cries like Paula over the loss of Ace. It was the first week without him. But she pulled through and found a new favorite maybe. Did she switch teams or stay strong on her own side? Find out now!

Farah Syed is going to watch her TV until she dies! So don’t tell her to turn it off! How dare you?! See what she is talking about now!

Patrick Gilchriest loved last week’s episode of ‘Survivor’! I actually got half of this week’s episode at someone else’s house. And yes..I do think Terry will win. But you got enough of that from Dora. So see what Patrick has to say!

Kevin Wong brings to you a picture show featuring ‘The Transformers’! It’s their rebirth! Enjoy the images and story that goes along with it. And see what he watched this past week. Go now!

The Weekly Pulse Weekly Poll

It’s time to get this weekly poll back up and running. This week’s question has to deal with “May Sweeps” as I will be talking about that later. The question is..“what do you think about the ‘sweeps’ time of year for TV?” Do you like it as it means great TV for you or do you don’t like it, because you think networks go too far with their programming and it’s not what they usual present on a regular basis? You can VOTE now! And I know you all can do it as we have done it for the past month and half with our TV tournament. So get to it!

Time to Talk a.k.a. It’s Time to Sweep!!

How about a little spring cleaning? No..you hate to clean? Me too. But I’m not talking about cleaning your house or anything like that. I’m talking about doing another kind of sweeping in the Spring time. More like sweeping in May or “May Sweeps” time. What’s that..you say? I’ll tell you.

There are 4 times a year when the ratings people “sweep” the country and collect viewing habits of people everywhere. This occurs in November before the holiday season. It occurs in February after the holiday season. It also occurs in July during the summer season. And it happens one other time and it’s in May before the summer season. During these “sweeps” months, all the major networks bring out their best shows and best episodes of these shows. It is usually all new episodes of shows and sometimes those shows feature guest appearances by other “famous” people.

May is a little bit different than the other months, thouh. Why? Because May is usually the time where the networks air the final episodes of the season for some of their shows and the final episodes forever for some other shows. They usually save the best stuff for last and May is where TV is at its best. It’s time to sweep!

But since networks are trying to get more viewers and thus more advertising money during this time, they sometimes air episodes that are not like others in the same season. Critics of the “sweeps” system of ratings say that this time of the year is not representative of typical programming in other times of the year. “Sweeps” encourages an increase in sexual and violent content to try and gain more viewers. Networks try to stir up the most controversary during this time as well.

I agree that usually these “sweeps” episodes are not the same as usual episodes earlier in the year. But if you are a fan of a particular show, then you can’t wait for May to get here. The season finale of your favorite show is sure to be the best or one of the best of the year. It usually takes all of the elements that you like in that show and throw them all together in one or two explosive episodes. However, the opposite is true as well. If you don’t like a particular show, but still happen to catch the “sweeps” episodes of that show..you may be tricked into thinking that the show is better or worse than it really is. The “sweeps” episodes could be so good that you may want to check out the show again. That is what the networks hope it will do. But once you do see futher episodes of that show, you may be disappointed.

For all the shows that I have enjoyed since the beginning of the TV year back in August/September, I can’t wait for their final episodes of the season to air. They should be extremely good. But learn something from me. If you don’t like a show in other times of the year, please don’t get tricked into liking the same show. Yes..the episodes will be good. It will make for some great TV, but once you get out of the “sweeps” zone..you may see something totally different.

It’s like going out all night and drinking a lot of alcohol. You will have a good time, while you are doing that. It may be the best time of your life. But the morning will come and the morning will shine a big light on the truth. Sometimes you wake up and feel good about what you did the night before. The light makes what you did that much better. Other times, you can wake up and regret the night before. The light can send a damaging beam straight to your head and make you won’t to forget it ever happened.

My advice to you is simple. Enjoy the episodes during “May Sweeps”. But think of this as a special time of year. Don’t get tricked into liking a show that you hated during other times of the year. It’s still the same show. It’s just kicked up a few notches to crazyland! There is no better time of the year for your favorite TV shows, though!

That’s all I got this week. Look for me to talk about something new next week and not having anything to do with “March Madness” or tournaments or TV..wait..scratch that last one. It HAS to be about TV..so TV it will be!

Remember..“Life Ain’t Always Beautiful, but It’s a Beautiful Ride!”

And as always…“You Can’t Fight Fate!”. See you next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
