Smack YOU! Smackdown Review 5th May 2006

Reviews, Shows, TV Shows

We’re in Cincinnati Ohio

You’re hosts are Tazz and Cole

Rey Mysterio starts out the show to his Wrestlemania mix of “Booyaka 619”. For some reason Rey Vs JBL will be at Judgment Day for the title. Hey that’s actually a sensible idea being that technically the US Champion is #1 contender. It just sucks that the US champ is JBL. Rey says that being World Champion everyday is a gift and he’s loving every minute of it. He puts Angle over but before he can finish JBL interrupts. JBL goes all condescending and says that at Judgment Day he’ll win. He mentions immigrants because apparently he DIDN’T beat that one into the ground 2 years ago against Eddie Guerrero. JBL complains about the immigrants striking as the fans chant “Eddie” and JBL uses that as a way to put Rey down saying they won’t chant for him. Damn all we need is for JBL to goose step in Germany again and we will be in a time warp. I hate cheap heat so much from a guy like JBL who can do SO much more than that. Rey is nonplussed by JBL’s insults about Eddie and says he’ll fight anybody anytime. JBL brings out Mark Henry to fight him. I think everyone can see Batista coming back to help Rey out in this situation so we can all get that awesome Henry/Batista match (Note my sarcasm).

Booker T w/ Sharmel Vs Gunner Scott
I actually read the Gunner Scott story on WWE.com for some reason and it was quite good. They lock up and Gunner doesn’t give a clean break in the corner by slapping Booker’s chest. Booker goes to a side headlock but Gunner forearms his way out. Scott gets a drop-toe-hold but Booker fights back with a hammerlock. Booker gets some chops and right hands in the corner. Gunner fights back with his own but runs into a stun gun. Booker goes to a chin lock and holds off Gunner from countering. Gunner fights out and gets a high elbow to Booker’s jaw. Gunner fires off some right hands and ducks a side kick and gets a snap suplex. Another snap suplex gets two as they keep making the ever subtle Benoit comparisons. Booker gets a side kick but Gunner gets a rolling cradle for two. Sharmel gets involved and Booker super kicks Gunner and then gets the Scissors Kick for three

WINNER – BOOKER T

*1/2 – Well that was as pointless as it was by the numbers

Booker gets a mic post match to gloat about his impending KOTR victory.

WWE Tag Team Championship
(C) MNM w/ Melina Vs London and Spanky
Good booking sense has MNM taking a DQ defeat here building up a cage match for Judgment Day. Anyway MNM attack from behind and Snap Shot both the challengers. The result is no match. Awesome beat down there that continues the feud nicely. Spanky gets an extra Snap Shot for daring to move on the floor. Now THIS is how you utilise the tag belts. Get two teams and make them actually fight over them as opposed to having a title match every 3 weeks for no other reason than to let the champs beat a random team. Here you have both these teams fighting with one another each week heating up fans interest for the eventual title match. Add to the fact that all four are good-great workers then you have a hell of a reason to care about the belts. As was shown by the decent heel heat being drawn from MNM for the beat down.

Another Tatanka video is shown this one entails him going through some sort of ritual showing his “re-birth” Um……….yeah. Who else thinks this has just been done to give JBL more cheap heat for the consequent feud between the two?

Daivari is backstage and Teddy Long shows up saying that Undertaker has challenged Great Khali to a match at Judgment Day. Khali signs without thinking twice.

KOTR Opening Round Match
Finlay Vs Chris Fucking Benoit
I think I’ve already mentioned how much it sucks that they aren’t having all 3 matches on one show as it totally defeats the purpose of the tournament to have it this way. Lock up leads to nothing as does another. They go to a test of strength and Benoit turns that into a top wristlock and then a side headlock. Benoit tries to wear Finlay piece by piece as Finlay goes for the legs. Benoit turns that in to an arm bar but Finley rolls him over into a pinning predicament. They do the UFC mount position and Benoit goes back to the arm but Finlay makes the ropes to break. They go nose to nose and Finlay gets a clothesline. Finlay dodges a Benoit chop so Benoit shoots down and grabs Finlay’s leg. Benoit locks in the Indian Deathlock but Finlay makes the ropes. Finlay gets a thumb to the eye and sends Benoit shoulder first into the ring post. Finlay goes to the arm lock to work the shoulder. Benoit tries the Sharpshooter but Finlay is able to roll to the outside. Finlay catches Benoit’s head in the apron and pounds away on Benoit’s face. Finlay stays on the arm and shoulder back inside and Benoit tries the Sharpshooter again but Finlay kicks him off and gets a flurry of right hands to Benoit’s upper body. Finlay drops a knee for two as Benoit starts bleeding. Finlay drops an elbow for two and works the cut but gets complacent and Benoit goes for the cross face. Finlay fights it and rolls to the ropes to break. Benoit ducks a short arm clothesline and gets a big German Suplex and chops Finlay to the outside. Finlay gets angry and starts throwing chairs in the ring as we go to a commercial.

Commercial

We’re back with Benoit unloading with some chops in the corner. Benoit drops an elbow and gets a snap suplex for two. Benoit keeps on Finlay with some absolute stingers but he gets thrown into the turnbuckle at 100 miles an hour sternum first. Finlay goes to a chin lock and starts trash talking him. Benoit fights back up but gets clotheslined down and locked back in the chin lock. Benoit gets a jaw breaker to break the move but Finlay is quickly able to stay on him and get something very much like the cross face. Benoit fights up to his knees and tries to elbow out but Finlay is one step ahead of him and elbows him back down. Benoit dodges a Finlay charge and Finlay hits the post shoulder first. Benoit gets the three German’s and heads up but misses the head butt. Finlay tries to use the stick thing but Benoit fights him off and the ref takes it away however he doesn’t see Finlay nail Benoit in the throat with a chair setting up the Kryptonite Krunch for the win

WINNER – FINLAY

***1/2 – Great match with some good chain wrestling. Shame about the cheap ending.

Gymini w/ Simon Dean Vs Scotty 2 Hotty and Funaki
Like you need to ask who will win this one? Funaki and the bald guy from Gymini starts, wait the fat one, wait the one with the beard, wait……um I never bothered learning their names as I felt I had enough useless stuff to remember as it is. Anyway one of the Gymini guys pins Scotty following the H-Bomb

Lashley is backstage and goes into Booker T and Sharmel’s saying they forgot about him in the KOTR. Booker says that Lashley is no match for him and that he won’t beat Finlay. Lashley says he’ll beat Finlay and Booker T and steals Booker’s catchphrase as well. Man a brother shouldn’t hate on another brother. They should both just sit down, watch the Chappelle show and hold hands plotting their revenge against the man like all good brothers. Yes I’m not very P.C. deal with it!

#1 Contender for the Cruiserweight Championship at Judgment Day
Kid Kash Vs Nunzio Vs Super Crazy
Hey it’s an ECW reunion! Crazy gets double teamed to start but fight then off and fights with Kash. Nunzio gets the Sicilian Slice on Crazy for two. Crazy sends both Kash and Nunzio outside and Asai Moonsault’s onto them. However, Great Khali then comes out because heaven forbid the Cruisers should actually get some time on Smackdown. Khali destroys everyone and yells a lot. I guess this match is a no contest. So who’s #1 contender now? How nice of WWE to keep us clued up about such things isn’t it?

Mark Henry Vs Rey Mysterio
JBL comes down to the ring for guest commentary. I’m not going to dignify this with a match review. I hate this Henry main event so much I hear by refuse to call his matches until they boot him down the mid-card. The guy is awful and boring and he shouldn’t be stinking up one of my favourite TV shows each week. Henry with his crappy front slam. Henry continues to beat Rey down post match and tries to literally kill him by splashing him off the stage. JBL stops him so he has someone left to beat at Judgment Day. JBL challenges Rey to face Khali next week in San Diego. Why, Why, WHY??????????????!?!??!?!??!?!?!?

Damn this show just confuses me some time. A bad effort from the Smackdown side this week. Benoit/Finlay was good and everything else was miss able.
