Invasion – Recap – Episode 1-21

Archive

We’re down to the final two episodes of (the first season of) ‘Invasion’. There’s still been no official word regarding renewal but hopefully we shall find out soon. I know a lot of schedules for next season get announced on the 15th so perhaps we’ll know by the time the season finale airs.

Things pick up where they left off last week as Dave is preparing for the oncoming storm and his video camera is rolling.

Russ calls and says that he and Tom are on their way back to town to find Szura’s hybrids. Dave asks what they’ll do if the hybrids are attempting an insurrection and Tom says that they will have to kill them.

Larkin and Mariel are still driving to safety. Kira is trying to call Lewis but the cellphones seem to be inoperative. They are about an hour from the motel but the journey is cut short by a tree falling in their path.

At the hospital, Lewis gets a visit from a couple of deputies. They want to know where Tom is and when Lewis doesn’t have an answer for them, they tell him about Deputy Munger’s death. They think Tom is responsible and that Tom has turned against the hybrids. The deputies tell Lewis that he has to decide which side he is on.

Tom and Russ arrive at Blackpoint Sound. Frank Vargas truck is there so either he never left from earlier or he came back. Tom and Russ assume he is on guard, looking over the hybrids. But when they go to talk to Frank it turns out that he’s been shot in the head. Tom says the hybrids left already (presumably that is connected to the tire tracks they found in the mud).

Russ finds a whole bunch of discarding clothing. He wonders why they would get rid of their clothes. Tom speculates that they may have switched to military uniforms. The original plan was for some of the hybrids to take the place of National Guardsmen to make things less traumatic in the event of another hurricane.

Speaking of people in military uniforms, a truck pulls up behind the stranded members of the Underlay/Varon clans. The guards offer to take them to a shelter and they begin to get on the truck. As Mariel gets on the truck she realizes the guards are hybrids but it is too late as everyone else has already boarded. Once the family is on board the guard radios Szura to let him know they’ve got another load of people on the way.

Dave’s storm preparations are interrupted by when Lewis and the two deputies from the hospital show up. They want to know where Tom is; Dave begins to tell them but then hesitates, realizing something is up. He tells them that he doesn’t know where Tom and Russ are right now but he’ll let them know if he learns anything. One of the deputies notes Dave’s injured hand and asks to examine it. Once Dave holds his hand out the man presses rather hard on the wound, causing Dave a lot of pain. Dave repeats that he doesn’t know where they are. The other not Lewis deputy believes him and says they will stay right where they are until Tom or Russ make contact.

After Larkin figures that they seem to be heading back to town, and Mariel fails to gain access to a radio, Mariel quietly informs her family that the guards are all hybrids and they know she is one as well.

Tom and Russ are headed into town. Tom speculates the military probably provided Szura with the truck, not realizing how much of a danger he presents to them.

They find a truck going in the opposite direction and stop it. Tom introduces himself and questions the man about his destination. The guard is late for a pick-up for hurricane evacuation. Tom checks the back of the truck (it’s clean) while Russ asks where the evacuated people are being taken. The guard says the high school but when Russ presses about which high school the guard grabs a gun and attempts to shoot Russ. Fortunately, Tom was watching the exchange and shoots the guard first.

Using the dead guy’s radio, Russ and Tom (pretending to be lost) are able to find directions to the evacuation headquarters.

The truck with Larkin and the rest of the family arrives at a warehouse on the dock. We see that there are already quite a few people in the warehouse as the truck is unloaded. The people are being separated into different groups. Mariel gets sent to a different line than the rest of her family. She tries to struggle and Jesse joins in to help her but neither of them have much success.

Back at the Varon household, Dave is complaining about the deputies. Dave says he had always heard good things about Lewis and evokes Kira to help his case. One of the deputies gets violent with Dave but then Lewis pulls his gun and says that Tom killed their friend. While Lewis is threatening Dave, he gives him a slight head shake and an unusual look. Following Lewis’ lead, Dave says that he can try to call Russ with his radio in the garage. Lewis wants to go to the garage with Dave but one of the other deputies wants to go, leaving Lewis with the other deputy (who is apparently named ‘Troy’).

Once in the garage Dave wants to know why the hybrids are so worried about finding Tom tonight. The deputy says there are going to be thousands of confused people in the morning and they don’t want Tom’s influence confusing things. Dave manages to maneuver things so the deputy is in front of the door that was blowing in the wind earlier. He pulls the rope and the door flies open, striking the deputy. Dave then clubs the man and takes his gun.

Tom and Russ have made it to the dock. Tom thinks Szura is planning to use the storm as a cover for genocide. Russ wants to rescue everyone but Tom thinks it’s not possible. He then gets an idea and suggests that he and Russ split up.

Russ sneaks into the warehouse (hanging from the underside of a truck, ala Sideshow Bob) and blends in with a crowd of people going into one of the buildings. After watching some families being forcefully separated Russ makes his way further into the warehouse. Everyone starts staring at him as Russ just infiltrated the hybrid warehouse. One of them says he’s in the wrong place and Russ takes off down a corridor.

Russ goes down a hallway and comes across Mariel (who is locked in a cage). Russ is shocked to see her as he had thought they had gotten out of town. Mariel tells Russ about their capture and how she was separated from Larkin and the kids. Russ lets Mariel know that Tom is trying to shut down the power station to help them to get everybody out. Russ gives his gun to Mariel, saying she needs it more than he does.

Some guards come down the hall so Russ hides around the corner. Szura is with the guards and he bids Mariel to come with him.

Troy and Lewis are still waiting for the others to come back from the garage. Lewis tries to go outside to check on them but Troy says they can go together. Dave takes advantage of Troy’s distraction and emerges with gun in hand.

Back in the non-hybrid warehouse everyone seems to be worried about their fate. Larkin asks Kira to come with her as she has a plan. Kira is asked to distract the guard while Larkin sneaks out and makes a run for a nearby ranger station (and its radio). The plan is okay with Kira but she thinks she should be the one to try and make a break for it. After a brief argument, Larkin agrees to let Kira try.

Larkin distracts the guard by making a big fuss about his refusal to allow a pregnant woman to go to the bathroom and Kira makes it outside. Her stealth doesn’t get her very far though as she’s spotted as soon as she gets outside. She runs away from the guard and, when they pass a corner, a board hits the guard in the head. Tom was still lurking about it seems and after sharing a hug with his daughter the two head to a nearby truck.

Szura now has Mariel in his ‘office’ and asks for her assistance. Mariel is only worried about seeing her kids but Szura says there are others who need her help. Some conveniently timed screaming illustrates this point. At this point Mariel notices Russ is hiding outside and peering through some boards. He seems to indicate she should shoot Szura but Mariel wants to find out what help is required.

Before we get to that help, Tom and Kira are now in one of the trucks. Kira tells her father that everyone is okay but they don’t know where Mariel is as they were separated.

Dave radios Tom to let him know about the deputies. He and Lewis have the situation under control now but Dave thinks the deputies wanted to kill Tom. Tom tells Dave to contact Colonel Lopez and tell her to bring as much evacuation equipment to the docks as quickly as possible or a lot of people are going to die. Dave agrees and then jokes that Lewis deserves a raise for all he’s done in saving Dave.

Back in the hybrid building Szura takes Mariel upstairs and says that the storm has agitated them. He lets Mariel into the room where the screaming is coming from. After a commercial we get to see that the room is filled with pregnant hybrids, all of them seemingly in a lot of pain. Mariel even sees a woman she recognizes who says it has only been three weeks and she doesn’t understand what is going on.

Szura insists that Mariel help deliver all the hybrids. Mariel insists that she cannot handle such a massive job on her own, particularly not without any of her hospital resources but Szura is unsympathetic.

In the non-hybrid crowd, Jesse is worried about Kira. His conversation with Larkin is cut short however when a guard suddenly announces they’re bringing cots in for everyone and asks them to stand next to the big, shaking from the wind, doors. While the crowd seems to accept this quite readily, Larkin is suspicious and tells the kids to stay where they are.

Szura gets a call on his radio and takes Mariel back downstairs. Waiting for them is Russ, who has been captured after trying to sneak back into the building. Szura suggests that Russ could help Mariel deliver the ‘babies’ and takes his leave (but not before locking them in the building, of course).

The doors to the non-hybrid warehouse are less locked however and in fact are being opened right now. There is a lot of screaming from the crowd as they realize there are many, many orange lights falling from the sky, into the water. Everyone is being herded outside however, even those who chose to stay towards the back of the crowd. Larkin screams for Russell and that’s the end of the episode.

A good job with the cliffhanger this week. It’s highly unlikely that Larkin or any of the kids will end up in the water but it still made for a suspenseful finish, particularly since you know some people won’t be so lucky.

There were a few things that were a tad on the predictable side (the failure to escape the town, Vargas being dead in his truck, Lewis not betraying Tom) but there was lots of other things going on which kept the suspense level up.

I suspect that someone will end up in the water next week, to add some weight to the threat of the hybrids. Part of me thinks it will be Larkin, if only because of the possible issues with her fetus but I’m not sure if they’ll want to go with both Russ’ ex-wife and current wife getting the hybrid treatment.

We already know Kira’s defect protects her and Lewis, Mariel and Tom already are hybrids. That leaves Dave, Russ, Rose and Jesse as other possibilities. The contrast between Russ and Tom would be ruined if Russ were made a hybrid so I think you can rule him out. It’s pretty much a toss-up with the others but if I had to guess I’d say Rose, if only because you can play off her innocent little kid-ness.
