Hello everyone I‘m Jim Trabold welcome to the Ultimate Marvel Handbook.

Hey Daron how are you today bud?

Not bad, a little tired, but not bad.

Sorry for the delay this week everyone, my internet was down all yesterday for some unknown reason”¦

Alright, I should have started with an apology. You are the boss here. Sorry for telling you what to do bud. Are we cool now?

Ah”¦it’s good to be the king.

Cool you get the call. Care to start?

Indeed.

Logan emailed

Hey Jim, hope all is well – and Daron, I trust the plans for World Domination continue apace?

Hahaha. I don’t think I’d try for world domination with Daron already doing it. Daron is like Doom. He’d just push me out of the way.

Doom indeed. And yes the plans are well on their way. Be on the lookout for a hostile take over force coming to a neighborhood near you SOON!

Reading Fantastic Four #537 this week, several references were made to “Ragnarok” within the pages of Thor issue’s #80 – #85. Now, I know what Ragnarok as an event in Norse Mythology is, but had no idea it had occured with the Marvel U!

So, what’s the story with this? What, or who, caused Ragnarok? Who lived, and who died? What was the final outcome? And what was Thor’s fate? How did his hammer end up sitting in a crater in Oaklahoma?

Actually yes I can explain this. Thor 80-85 as they said was during the period called Avengers Dissembled. Each title of an Avenger was affected. Thor was hit the hardest. Let’s cover this:

80. The Odin force actually left Thor. Loki finds the forge that created Mjolnir in the possession of the dwarves. He takes it and has Surtur creates multiple hammers like Mjolnir. And even though they are not as powerful, there are more of them. With them, Loki attacks. He succeeds in killing just about everyone, except Thor.

81. He gathers Cap and Iron Man but they are to late. They are attacked by Loki’s forces (Loki, Hyrm, Fenris, and Ulik) but fight them off. We find out Balder and Harokin are dead. Thor then sends Captain America and Iron Man home. He gathers the other Asgardians to fight.

82. Fandral and Hogun are revealed dead and Volstagg is thinner then normal. Horakin also joins Tho’s group. They all make their way to Vanaheim. More dead: Geirrodur, Hrinmeer, Kurse, and Vidar are found there. The group face Fenris as Beta Ray Bill shows up.

83. Thor leaves Beta Ray in charge. He goes to Hildstalf to gain knowledge. He learns of the truth of Odinpower. Thor then sacrifices both of his eyes at the Well of Mimir to gain the true knowledge of Ragnarok. And to learn more, he must first die.

84. Thor goes to Yggdrasil and sacrifices himself. Thor underwent an even more brutal version of the trials of Odin, and in so doing learned the Ragnarok cycle was the result of self-styled “gods to the gods” known as Those Who Sit Above in Shadow. He returns to Hildstalft, and from there to Asgard. With his knowledge of the Runes combined with the Odinpower that is once more his, Thor easily defeats Mangog, and Loki’s Trolls. He cuts off Loki’s head while destroying Valhalla

85. Thor deceived Surtur into reforging Mjolnir in exchange for a supposed clear path to Asgard. To prevent the cycle from starting over again, Thor goes to the Three Norns and destroys the Loom of the Fates. This also destroys Yggdrasil and ends all the lives of those who dwell in Asgard and all the other Nine Worlds, except Midgard. Fenris as prophesied, consumed their remains, the shattering of the loom ostensibly broke the Ragnarok cycle. Sending Beta Ray Bill to Earth to serve as witness, Thor then entered the vaguely defined “sleep of the gods.”

So Thor is asleep. All of Asgard is destroyed and everyone there is dead. Thor’s hammer Mjolnir returned to Earth from Hell, crashing into Oklahoma and then put under U.S. Army protection. The hammer likely was let go of by Thor and went to Earth to find a new worthy holder to take on the power of Thor.

Thanks

Welcome

And take my word for it”¦just take the story from Jim”¦the comics are utterly unreadable. Mike Oeming’s art is great, but his writing does nothing for me”¦

Dardis posted

I have a quiestion. Where did they get the nickname ‘High-Pockets’ for Giant Man ? Is there something to this I’m missing or is it just because his pocket would be very high up ?

Actually you answer your own question in many ways. Wasp gave him the knick name because how tall he gets and how high his pockets are. But this isn’t even one of most common knick names like this. There’s all sorts. Some really funny ones to.

Captain America has been called Winghead
Iron Man is called Shellhead.
Daredevil is Hornhead of course
Spider-Man is Web-head, Wall-crawler, Webslinger
Thor is Goldilocks
Nova=Buckethead
Wolverine=Canucklehead, Runt
Human Torch=Flamebrain, Matchstick
Mr. Fantastic=Stretcho
Cyclops=One-eye, slim
Jean=Red
Nightcrawler=fuzzy elf

Of course these are just a few and there’s names they are more generally known as well.

Daredevil=Man Without Fear
Captain America= The Star-Spangled Avenger
Avengers=Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
Doctor Strange=Master of the Mystic Arts
Hulk=Green Goliath
Iron Man=Golden Avenger
Sentry=The Golden Guardian of Good
Wolverine=Weapon X

To name a few

There’s also shortening the name:

Cap=Captain America.
Spidey=Spider-Man
Wolvie=Wolverine

I can keep going of course but I want to see what our readers can think of. So here’s your challenge guys. Come up with what you think are the ten best nicknames or the funniest ones. Send them to me or post them. We’ll post them here.

They may have been the longest answer to the weirdest question I’ve yet seen on here”¦ever.

Cory emails

Cory here, Sup guys. Oh boy! (Not mad, only ranting & raving) So let’s go:

Hey Cory. Good to see you again

1- Looks like the men against gods haven’t been themselves lately, looks like they have been better. Captain America, in Civil War #1, going A.W.O.L! Who knew ole Steve had it in him to be so….Gangsta! Also, across the pond in Infinite Crisis #7, Batman (not only kicked Deathsroke ass in an off panel fight), but….dare I say…picked up a handgun…to use in cold-blood! wow, kudos to both! How bout that guys?

I knew Cap could do that. Hell he’s gone rogue what now? 3-4 times. I mean he’s willing to even give up being Captain America for his principals really. He fights for what he believes is right. Hell I knew he could take out all those SHIELD guys to. He’s one of the best at it. I was glad to see it happen. I like Cap when he acts like this. It always brings out the best in him

Ummm, I actually haven’t read any of that yet. :(

2- I recently read in the UMHB that there was a certain dislike for the Punisher movie with Thomas Jane, but c’mon True Believers, compared to the 1st one like (Gigli), this was (The Godfather)! Though more bloodshed MUST be displayed in the sequel.

THANK YOU! I am glad to have someone agree with me here. Punisher with Thomas Jane was damn good. I thought it portrayed Frank perfectly. (although I agree more bloodshed will be fine for part 2)

I don’t really have an opinion (seeing as I haven’t seen it), other than the fact that I think the Punisher is a complete waste of paper as a comic. He’s right up there with Gambit with the Hulk coming in right behind him”¦

3- Families: So in the Magnus family, Polaris is the oldest right? and who is her (green-haired) mother? the Azazel family…hmmm…what about the Darkholme family (Rogue, Nightcrawler, Mystique)…maybe even Sabretooth? Oh, and in the Cassidy family, you guys forgot Siryn.

Well we don’t officially know who Magneto was with to give birth to Polaris, Lorna Dane. I hope we do get that answer some time in the future.
Darkholme family is a good one but I ruled Rogue out for being adopted. Also Creed would be ruled out too. But if I counted all members for each family and combine it all up the rankings would change a lot to. I might just do that. Hell let’s do it now. I’ll add Rogue for Darkholme to

1. Mar-Vell family (Mar-Vell, Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, and Hulkling)
2. Richards family (Reed, Sue, Johnny, Franklin, Valeria, Hyperstorm, Marvel Girl, Kang?)
3. Summers family (Havok, Cyclops, Vulcan, Marvel Girl, Cable, X-Man, Jean Grey, Madelyne Pryor, Genesis, Stryfe, Hyperstorm, Franklin Richards)
4. Satan (Satan, Hellstorm and Satana)
5. Magnus family (Magneto, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Wiccan, Thomas, Nightcrawler, Nocturne, and Polaris)
6. Darkholme (Nightcrawler, Sabretooth, Rogue, Mystique, Abyss, Kiwi Black, Margali, Magik II, Scarlet Witch, Nocturne, Destiny)
7. Xavier family (Professor X, Juggernaut, Cassandra Nova, J2, and Legion)
8. Rasputin family (Colossus, Magic, and Mikhail)
9. Frost family (Cordelia, Adrienne, and Emma)
10. St. Croix family (M, Emplate, Nicole, and Claudette)
11. Braddock family (Psylocke, Jamie Braddock, and Captain Britain)
12. Cuckoo family (Celeste, Mindee, Phoebe, Phoebe, and Sophie)
13. Yoshida family (Silver Samurai, Sunfire and Sunpyre)
14. Guthrie family (Cannonball, Icarus, Husk, and Elizabeth Guthrie)
15. Beaubier family (Northstar and Aurora)
16. Aaronson family (Jesse Bedlam and King Bedlam)
17. Cassidy (Banshee, Siryn and Black Tom)
18. Bohusk family (Before Decimation: Tito, Kara, Axel, three other children)

Of course we can make really big mergers to as you can see. Heck I can add in others to. I Could merge Richards/Summers for future possibilities, I can merge Magnus/Darkholme for alternate possibilities. I could really make this impossible on myself.

Ummm, I think you’re gonna have to explain to me how Franklin Richards is in the Summe’s family, and Nighcrawle’s in the Magnus family. I don’t get that at all.

4- Civil War: besides Tony stark being a beyotch now, I totally feel sorry for Peter Parker the most. “He was recently co-erced by Iron Man into joining his side.” BOO! More like “blackmailed”. He gives him the shaft in the last fight in New Avengers, gives him new armor….which also is the same color scheme as his armor, and has NO choice but join his side, because if he doesn’t he will be outed as a outlawed Spider-Man as P. Parker, or join him and be “legally” outed as P. Parker, so he has it the worst.

Yep. I feel sorry for Pete too. I have a bad feeling about this one the most. Something will happen with this. I really hope that Pete don’t do something really stupid here. Personally I think Stark’s gone insane.

4b- Now Wolverine’s hunting this Nitro idiot? (As if he aint busy enough)

Heh. Well he is doing it in his book at least. With Origins it can happen past or present. We know it’s present now but still it won’t effect that book. Astonishing X-Men I don’t think will get effected. New Avengers will of course. But not sure he’ll be involved after Civil War

Well we can be thankful that Logan’s getting a reprieve. He’s no longer going to be on either of the two regular X-Teams.

4c- Hopefully Thor or Hulk or Both will return to knock some since into the Pro-Registration heroes. Since Thor is a god would he have to register, or what about Silver Surfer, or the cosmic heroes?

I would suppose all the heroes would if they wanted to. I mean it’s not like Thor will or Surfer. I think when Thor comes back he’ll join Cap’s side. I can see it now. He respects Cap the most after all. Thor vs. Sentry anyone?
Oh and if Hulk comes back during the war I think Reed and Tony better pray he doesn’t kill them.

4d- Back to Stark, this guy then hires Titanium Man to try to assassinate him, just to demonstrate the continuing need for superheroes to Washington legislators in favor of a superhuman registration bill. Can you say “beyotch”, oh let me count the ways!

Hehe note that Titanium Man is one of Iron Man’s biggest foes too. I mean go and hire one of your foes to do that. That’s just mental illness.

4e- So while all this Civil crap is going down, I guess the heroes just totally forgot about the mutant decimation, Scarlet witch’s problems, oh an TTHE FRIGGIN VILLAINS!!! remember them, guys?

The villains will be involved. Don’t you worry. You’ll see villains. Bet they will take advantage of this to. Decimation will still be relevant in X-Men at least (even though the story is not one of the best plotted ones.

4f- The Hero Hunters? Punisher? I hope the Marvel boys know that he don’t bring in suspects, lol.

lol. Are you saying Deadpool will either? I mean come on Deadpool is a Merc. He kills people for money. This will be very interesting too. Hero hunters and all.

5- The friggin Thunderbolts!!!! Ant-Man and Ms. Marvel offered to pardon the members of the Thunderbolts (who still had outstanding legal problems), if the Thunderbolts would attack and humiliate the New Avengers in public. When? why? what the F**K?
OH NO! IT’S ALL GOING DOWNHILL!! IT’S OVER! Geez!

It’s not over. Don’t worry. The Thunderbolts stuff was part of this Civil War set up. A lot of the books recently have been setting up towards the War. Yes that includes limited series and the like. I read everything by Marvel but a few books and I could see how it’s been building towards this War. Most people that read Thunderbolts though knew which side Hank and Ms Marvel likely would be on in this.

Also readers reading say Daughters of the Dragon would know why Colleen Wing will join Tony. Marvel has been reconnecting the whole universe to a whole again for this. This is what everything was leading towards.

6-Is it me or does this whole Civil War fiasco seem eerily similar to the Immigration Bill, that currently has this great nation so divided? or The East Coast vs.West Coast rap war, you either with Biggie or Pac (CA or IM).

Hehe nice connections there. I can see where your thinking is too. I side with Cap on this one myself

Ummmm, I don’t know if I’d compare it to any immigration Bill. This is pretty different. Especially I’m all for booting out ILLEGAL aliens, and not at all for superhuman registration :)

7- Where the heck is Hawkeye? Any word on his return?

I bet he’s already back and we don’t know it. *whistles innocently* Actually he is coming back in Civil War I’ve heard. I suppose he could be the imposter Daredevil. Hell that might be Matt but I’m still questioning it.

8- Iron Man the Movie, forget Tom Cruise….give Colin Farrell a goatee & a contarct…and we have a film. What you fellas think?

I can see it. I just hope they do it right with Iron Man. Collin can pull it off though. He’s got the look. Hell I don’t like Cruise to much anyway

I think they can do better than both honestly, though I’m not sure who off the top of my head”¦

Until next week…..hope you guys got your free comics…….Keep up the good work. “God be with ye.” or Goodbye. LOL

Got mine. See you next time Cory bud.

Must read picks of the week

It’s that time again everyone. This weeks top 5 Marvel books of the week.

1. X-Men Deadly Genesis 6 – The hit X-Men series that spun out of House of M reaches it jaw-dropping conclusion in X-Men: Deadly Genesis #6. This ending is one not to be missed as the ramifications of this issue lead directly into X-Men: Deadly Genesis writer Ed Brubaker’s run on Uncanny X-Men beginning with issue #475.

It’s everything it says here. Trust me if you want to read Ed’s run on Uncanny you should read this one first. This was a great series.

2. Cable Deadpool 28 – “Domino Principle” Part 1 (of 2)
DOMINO is hired to stop DEADPOOL’s activities in the Central European country of Rumekistan, only to learn he plans to assassinate the country’s imposed ruler, the international terrorist named FLAG-SMASHER. Should she stop him? Will her decision be influenced when she finds out DP was given his mission by… CABLE?!
I’m sure everyone knows by now that Deadpool is one of the funniest characters. This book is one of the best to. A must read.

3. Thunderbolts 102 – Joystick vs. Speed Demon in Round One of the Guardian Protocols! Why have so many Thunderbolts agreed to Zemo’s plans? What role does the Grandmaster and his “Squadron Sinister” play in the gambit? And can there be anything worse than having the fate of the universe lie in the hands of Zemo? We’re thinking, yes… but wait until you see whose hands our fate does lie in!

Alright folks. This is a great book. Not one to pass by lightly. I think most people can get into it easy and should be on most anyones must reads.

4. Annihilation Super Skrull 2 – The Fantastic Fou’s enemy may prove the galaxy’s savior as Super-Skrull crusades against the Annihilation Wave! Pitted against an enemy superweapon, Super-Skrull’s quest takes him behind enemy lines, where an evil scientist and a planet of alien scum may be his only hope for victory!

DAMN! That’s the word I’m going to use for this one. I’m enjoying a few of the Annihilation books. Surfer and Super Skrull the most so far.

5. Ares 4 – The God of War and The Prince of Power have clashed before, and the bitter enemie’s hatred for each other knows no bounds. But now, as a perilous new foe wreaks havoc upon Mount Olympus, Ares and Hercules are forced to forgive past hatreds and fight side-by-side!

But the gods’ last hope may lie outside of their hands, in an enigmatic deity from the ancient Japanese Pantheon who might hold the key to victory. But will they accept this strange’s help? Or has godly arrogance already doomed the Greek Pantheon?
Meanwhile, the threat of patricide, which has plagued the Greek gods for centuries, rears its ugly head again, but this time it is reflected in the beautiful, young face of Ares’ very own son — Alexander – who has taken steps to destroy his father and claim the mantle of the GOD OF WAR for himself!

If your not reading this book your missing out. Trust me this one is much in the same vain Thor was when it was in it’s hayday.
