The Inside Pulse: In the vein of ironic, eccentric rock bands like Ween, Weezer, Barenaked Ladies, and Talking Heads comes The Lovely Feathers, a quintet from Montreal, who combine dissonant guitars and pianos with quirky, irreverent lyrics. After achieving local celebrity with their first album, My Best Friend Daniel, they’re trying to expand their audience with their newest album, Hind Hind Legs. Will their combination of strong musicianship and offbeat lyrics win them a bigger audience?

Positives: The Lovely Feathers are certainly accomplished musicians. Guitarists Mark Kupfert and Richard Yanofsky and pianist Daniel Suss combine to create compelling melodies over solid backbeats laid down by bassist Noah Bernamoff and drummer Ted Suss. Their music is experimental but hook-laden, which makes for a uniquely listenable experience.

Negatives: Yanofsky and Kupfert are strong singers, but their voices are wasted on the band’s goofy lyrics, as they sing about the Pope, hives and chapped eyelids, and dancing naked in cornfields. It becomes a distraction rather quickly and takes away from the overall experience.

Cross-breed: Ween meets Barenaked Ladies.

Reason to buy: If you’re a fan of irreverent music, then you may enjoy The Lovely Feathers. But for most listeners, this band will be just too strange to embrace.
