Ultimate Marvel Handbook #12 (167)

Hello everyone I‘m Jim Trabold welcome to the Ultimate Marvel Handbook.

Hey Daron how are you today bud?

Hey, Jim, everyone. I’m actually doing pretty good today. I’m finally off after 7 days and living the high life”¦sleeping in and doing nothing.

I‘m pretty good. Heck I‘m in a good mood. I‘m looking ahead for these next few weeks. With X-3 and Wizard World Philly.

Indeed. I was actually going to come out for Philly this year. My girlfriend was going to buy me a plane ticket for my birthday, but for what ever reason they’re just too damn high, so unfortunately I won’t be able to make it.

You have a point we should start this up.

Um”¦yeah”¦

Blake asked

Who are Marvels richest characters on a scale of 1-10

You know this one will be more going on who I believe then anything. We know closely how this list is though. I’m only including the living.

1. Iron Man
2. Fujikawa Industries
3. Doctor Doom
4. Silver Sable
5. Roxxon Oil Company
6. Fantastic Four
7. Justin Hammer
8. Norman Osborn
9. Professor X
10. The Braddocks
11. Bloom Industries
12. Sunset Bain
13. Emma Frost
14. Oracle Inc
15. Dracula
16. Black Panther
17.Henry Pym
18.Baron Zemo
19.United Guilds
20. Arcade

I might not have them in the right order. Heck I might be forgetting characters. I’m going to leave it like this as a top 20 and we’ll play around with it as we go. Maybe our readers will help.

Colin emails

Good day,

Hey Colin

It’s always said that the Askani halted the spread of Cable’s techno-virus. If that’s so, why does he need to use so much of his power to keep it check? Sounds like they didn’t do anything.

Actually I would say more that the Askani taught him control. He was taught how to use his powers to make sure that it didn‘t spread to the point that it would kill him. Without going to the future to learn control Nathan would be dead right now. Also the fact is if they did cure him Nate might just be more powerful then most any telepath on the planet. Just like X-Man was.

Where’s Exodus these days? How does a mutant with every power ever made stay hidden?

Actually the last time we saw him he was leading a group called the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and attacking the X-Mansion. The entire team was defeated by the second Xorn, who sucked them into the “black hole” within his head. Apparently they wound up on Mojoworld.

And lastly, just because Deadpool calls Spidey’s eyes Tobey Maguire eyes, doesn’t necessarily mean that the Marvel U has the Spider-Man movie. Obviously the writer is having a laugh, but if the Marvel U has the Spidey movie, why doesn’t everyone on the planet know he’s Peter Parker? You think only Deadpool would see the movie?

Actually I don’t think Marvel had the Spider-Man movie. I just think Deadpool has seen it. Remember the idea of the Fourth Wall with Deadpool. Deadpool is one of few Marvel comic books that have broken the “fourth wall” and called attention to his nature as a comic book character. Deadpool’s banter to the reader was always more along the lines of Looney Tunes cartoon styled slapstick. In fact, early on in the series, some ads for the book came with the tag-line “Deadpool: Breaking down the fourth wall, brick by brick!”

So I think it’s possible that in some vein Deadpool knows the events of our world. Not just the comics world. That he may have seen Spider-Man the movie. Heck who’s to say that Marvel don’t have the movie too BUT they didn’t reveal he was Peter Parker there since no one knew that. Somehow they changed that.

Also recall Deadpool went to House of M. That whole world knew Pete was Spidey. That world also had numerous Spider-Man movies. Can we be sure he didn’t see it there? There’s many possibilities.

cheers,

See you next time

Daron threw some in last week I need to explain for him

“Ummm, I think you’re gonna have to explain to me how Franklin Richards is in the Summe’s family, and Nighcrawle’s in the Magnus family. I don’t get that at all.”

Greg actually caught the Franklin one.

I used alternate futures and realities to actually make the family trees full. That’s right.
Franklin and Rachel both got together in Days of Future Past time line and in reality there likely was more then one reality with this idea. One of the realities spawned Hyperstorm.

As for Nightcrawler. You might want to read Exiles some there. Well actually take Nocturne into your mind. Nocturne is the daughter of Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch. She’s in Marvel 616 now so I added the idea of Nightcrawler being related to Magnus.

Okay, admittedly I had no idea about Franklin, but as an Exiles reader I obviously did know about Nocturne. I just didn’t realize you were using alternate dimensions in this list (and don’t think that you should.) If you do, you’d have to include a lot more than you did, and I think you’d probably see a lot more “crossover” in people being in multiple families. For example, you’d have to use Rogue in the Magnus family because they’re married in AOA, and also in the Darkholme family since she’s also Mystique’s adopted daughter. So I’d keep it just to 616 Marvel.

With this in mind, I also keep the list to just people who share genetic make up. I.E. you shouldn’t include anyone who marries into a family. Example: Jean Grey should NOT be included in the Summe’s family (for the purposes of this list), but any children she (or her clone) had with Scott would. So the Summe’s family would have all 3 of the Summers’ brothers, Cable, and Rachel.

I’d personally like to the list redone like this, but that’s really up to you”¦

Greg emailed me

Hey,

Hi Greg

I’m a writer/comedian out of NY and while I haven’t read a lot of Marvel lately – both due to budget and just because I don’t agree with a lot of what they’re doing right now.

– I use the Ultimate Marvel Handbook as one of my many sources to keep me in the loop of what’s happening with the characters.

Why thank you for reading us. Not everyone agrees with what some books are doing. That’s why we are here. We hear from people like you and we discuss everything happening.

Nice catch of Franklin Richards being part of the Summers family – after all, in an alternate future he marries Rachel Summers and Hyperstorm is born of their union.
Also, I wanted to float a theory to you guys – I’m wondering if Tony Stark is in his right mind right now. I think a pretty solid argument could be made that the “Extremis” virus he injected himself with over in his own book in the storyline that should’ve finished oh, a YEAR AGO is affecting his thought processes. I hope a future writer uses that…but then I’ve been waiting for them to use the fact that he has had ULTRON CODE in his body ever since “The Mask in the Iron Man,” so we’ll have to wait and see…

Daron knows about the catch now. But I’m glad someone caught where I was going. You know though your idea is a sound one. They could make it that the “Extremis” virus is effecting Tony to the point that he’s gone mad later. After all we all know that sometime down the line a writer will want to make Tony go back towards Cap’s side.

Heck it’s even possible the Ultron Code could be affecting him as well. It’s even possible that it’s not really Tony. Someone at my shop came up with a theory too. That not many people like old Shellhead. That fans are not flocking to Iron Man like they used to and that Iron Man never gained the popularity of say, Cap. So where do you go? You turn Tony into a heel.

Just like in wrestling. When the fans start turning against someone they turn them heel. Who’s to say they can’t use that in comics? It could work. They can always make him good again later using your idea. Simple enough to do.

That was a nice comics/wrestling segue there, Jimbo. Very nice indeed.

In the meantime I’m just gonna keep myself apprised. I have a wicked “Ricochet” series idea that I’m just waiting for the chance to do something with, and while I’ve been able to find a way around Hornet’s murder in Millar’s Wolverine, now I see Prodigy’s going to be showing up in Civil War: Frontline #2…gah!

I’ll keep you updated on the Prodigy front when the issue comes out. I’m sure that many old Slingers fans are really getting a little worried in ways now. With Hornet dead and Prodigy showing up and looking ready to fight Iron Man in a preview image. I know most are happy to see them in use but they are hoping more of them don’t die. But if Ricochet shows up I’ll keep you updated.

Peace,

You to Greg. Please email again. I’d like to know more about your Ricochet idea to. Keep reading also.

Patrick emails

Hey Jim and Daron,

Hey Pat

Yo!

I was reading through some old comics and ran across an obscure character that even the wikipedia doesn’t have any info on.

Haywire, a member of the Squadron who appeared in the Avengers #5-6 and Avengers/Squadron Supreme Annual ’98. I remember he stayed behind in 616 while his teammates went back to their world, but whatever became of him? I thought his power was kind of bizarre, and it’d be neat if he resurfaced at some point, but I bet he’s been swallowed by the continuity beast, killed off-panel, or something to that effect.

Any idea?

Sure do. I’m a big fan of the old Squadron and like the current run too.

Haywire
Real Name: Harold Danforth
Occupation: Adventurer, former freedom fighter
Other Aliases: None
Place Of Birth: Unrevealed
Marital Status: Single
Known Relatives: None
Group Affiliation: Former member of Redeemers and Squadron Supreme
Powers: Athlete, has the ability to psionically generate a “tanglewire” from his fingertips which he can use for a variety of effects
First Appearance: Squadron Supreme #10
Height: 5′ 10″
Weight: 150
Hair:Strawberry blonde
Eyes:Brown
Personality: Fun-loving, confident, wise-cracking

History: Haywire was one of Nighthawk’s recruits for the Redeemers, chosen to infiltrate the Squadron. He and fellow Redeemer Inertia were romantically involved, until Inertia died trying to stop the Nth Man from consuming the Sun. Haywire’s fun-loving attitude has been dampened somewhat by his loss, but he remained a member of the Squadron. He chose to remain on Marvel-Earth when the rest of the Squadron returned home.

Appearances to date:
Squadron Supreme 10-12
Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe
Quasar 13-14,17,19,27,51, 53, 57
Avengers (v3) 5-6; Annual ’98
Avengers Celestial Quest 1-2, 4-8

Thanks, guys, keep up the good work.

Your welcome. I hope this bio helps. I’m sure I could give a bigger history but heck it should give you enough for now. We’ll keep up the good work as long as we can.

Or until Jim dies trying”¦which ever comes first.

Cory emails

Greetings, True believers….ooops….ummm, Hey guys…how ya been?…Cory here….and away we go:

Hey Cory. I’m a true believer. Not sure about Daron

I truly believe in only thing, and that is my inevitable rise to power and dominion over the entire world”¦

1>TOP 10 BEST NICKNAMES (MARVEL) *not in any order

1- WOLVERINE “The best there is at what he does…”
2- APOCALYPSE “Forever Walker, Son of The Morning Fire”
3- BLADE “Daywalker”
4- CABLE “The Man of Tomorrow (not to be confused with Superman)
5- IRON FIST ” The Living Weapon”
6- DAREDEVIL “Scarlet Swashbuckler”
7- SPIDER-MAN “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”
8- SABRETOOTH “Slasher, El Tigre, Der Schlachter (“The Butcher” in German)”
9- SPEEDBALL “The Masked Marvel”
10- MAGNETO “Master of Magnetism”
————————————————-
11- STORM “Wind-rider”
12- THANOS “The Mad Titan”
13- GALACTUS “Devourer of Worlds, Eater of Planets”
14- DR. STRANGE “Sorcerer Supreme”
15- SHUMA-GORATH “Lord of Chaos, He Who Sleeps, but Shall Awake”
16- ANNIHILUS “Living Death That Walks”

Great list. I’m hoping some other people get involved. We’ll keep this going. Remember people that you can list as many nicknames as you like. Cory had his top 16. Maybe you have a top 20 or 30. Send them. After all we can’t all decide exactly which are the best that easy.

FUNNIEST NICKNAMES

1- DEADPOOL “Buchanan Nekkid aka Buck & Naked, or Bucket Naked”
2- BEAST “Furball”
3- INVISIBLE WOMAN “Stormy Sue”

Hahaha. I’m sort of shocked Canucklehead didn’t make the list of funny ones but maybe next time huh?

2- Is it me or does the name “Benjamin” pop up alot in Marvel?

Benjamin Grimm, Franklin Benjamin Richards, Uncle Ben Parker, & Peter Benjamin Parker, am I right? The same can be said for “Francis” & “Joseph”. Charles “Francis” Xavier & Clint “Francis” Barton aka Hawkeye. Nicholas “Joseph” Fury, etc.

Most common names can be found in some of the names.

Peter: Peter Benjamin Parker, Piotr “Peter” Nikolaievitch Rasputin, Peter Paul Winston Wisdom
Jonathan: Jonathan Lowell Spencer “Johnny” Storm, Jonathan Hart
Benjamin: Benjamin Jacob “Ben” Grimm, Benjamin Parker
Francis: Charles Francis Xavier, Clint “Francis” Barton
Joseph: Nicholas “Joseph” Fury
James: James Howlett, James Proudstar, James “Jamie” Arthur Madrox
Robert: Robert “Bobby” Drake, Robert Bruce Banner, Robert L. Frank Sr
Henry: Dr. Henry “Hank” Philip McCoy, Henry J. Pym

You can do this with both companies I think. Think of it this way. When you come up with a real name for a character what would you use? An easy name to remember and a name that most anyone would use. I could likely list a lot more and even include females. It’s easier for a writer to use a normal name.

3- I hear speculation about a villainous defection within the X-Men. The question of Emma’s “true loyalties” have come to the light. What evidence has been shown or hinted at regarding her loyalties, and do u guys think she will turn on the team?
Speaking of Emma….Serena Southerlyn, the fictional lawyer from Law & Order played by Elisabeth Röhm, would be a nice White Queen.

Actually this all happens mostly in Astonishing. With the return of the Hellfire Club back now and her loyalties making their way towards them makes sense. She is easy to move back over to the villain side.

Emma’s unusually antagonistic relationship with Kitty Pryde and possible domination of Scott Summers are given as possible evidence of disloyalty. Her secretive relationship with the surviving Stepford Cuckoos has also been presented as “evidence,” and accusations are frequently made by other characters having reason to distrust her motives.

Also let’s go to Astonishing 13: Emma’s survival of the destruction of Genosha in New X-Men #115 was due to Cassandra Nova creating Emma’s secondary mutation as part of a scheme to infiltrate the X-Men as a sleeper agent. Nova having erased the memory of their encounter and only restoring it recently.

And as to your second part, I’m a big fan of Rohm from her days on Angel (and Law & Order), but I don’t think I really see her as Emma. While, I do think she may be able to pull off her personality (she could be pretty bitchy in Angel), I just don’t think she could pull off the Emma’s “usual attire” without some MAJOR augmentation. And let’s face it, Emma’s “assets” and her veracity at flaunting them, are really part of her character.

4- X-Men 3: No Omega Red, now I see. Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairman Tom Rothman said The Last Stand is the end of a trilogy, but not necessarily the end of the X-Men film series: “These three movies work as a trilogy. These characters in this relationship, it’s the culmination of that saga. It’s the culmination and the resolution of those relationships laid out in the first two movies.” The chances of a fourth installment have been publicly stated to rest on just how well this film does at the box office. Since we all now the movie will kick a$$, opening after the Da Vinci Code & week before the new Superman, what new mutants should be introduced in the next installment??? (Eventually I believe that even though Wolverine made Hugh Jackman a bigger star, that after 3 X-movies and a future solo movie, that he might get “bored or tired” with this role…so eventually better characters have to be re-introduced or debuted?) Sorry but, I gotta say the Ragin Cajun….at least now his romance with Rogue can blossom. Forge, Thunderbird, Sunfire, Cable, Havok, maybe Bishop…we need another black X-man, in case Halle calls quits.

Yes I agree Gambit must be in X-4. I would include Havok, Polaris, Banshee,, Even include a Cable or Bishop maybe. Change Betsy to the real Psylocke. I know she’s in X-3 but she don’t look right. I’m sure they can fix that.

I’m cool with having Gambit in X4, as long as Logan guts him for hitting on his “adopted” daughter Rogue. That would be TOO COOL!

4A- Better yet, what villains should be introduced? I say Mr. Sinister in X-4 (introducing Havok, Rachel Summers & Nathan…both from the future), also displaying Sinister’s relationship with the Summer’s family and possibly with Gambit, therefore establishing a mutual villain for all. The ending would be a 2-parter, similar to the last 2 Matrix movies, and X-5 would introduce En Sabah Nur……Apocalypse. X-5 would then be the ending of sorts, with all mutants from the past 4 installments coming back to stop Apocalypse. What you guys think? X-6….Onslaught, anyone???

I would use the Hellfire Club as the villains with Emma Frost in there and the rest. They are changing Dark Phoenix I know but still I would use the Hellfire Club. Heck you can put Sinister into the Hellfire Club. It‘s a simple move. What you could do is hint at Apocalypse as well. With Sinister saying stuff about him.
X-5 would be Apocalypse and the Horsemen. Logical move.

5- Instead of the Decimation update, can I & the fellow readers of the handbook….get detailed updates on the actions & reactions of the Civil War? (since it will occur in sooooo many Marvel titles)

Done! I’ll agree to that. In fact I’ll put that into play next week. I’ll cover all the Civil War connections that have been shown and new ones. The Decimation update is not included this week.

6- Daron???

6A-“I don’t really have an opinion (seeing as I haven’t seen it), other than the fact that I think the Punisher is a complete waste of paper as a comic. He’s right up there with Gambit with the Hulk coming in right behind him”¦” What’s ya gripe with Frank Castle?

As I said, I just think he’s a waste of paper. He’s a guy with a gun who kills people. He’s a one-dimensional character who really sounds more like a villain than a hero. I just have to use for him.

6B- “Ummm, I think you’re gonna have to explain to me how Franklin Richards is in the Summe’s family, and Nighcrawle’s in the Magnus family. I don’t get that at all. Nightcrawler”—> Nocturne (daughter from alternate universe), Scarlet Witch (mother), Magneto (maternal grandfather), Magda (maternal grandmother), Anya (aunt), Quicksilver (uncle), Wiccan (alternate reality half-brother), Thomas Shepherd (alternate reality half-brother).

Franklin Richards—> Invisible Woman (mother), Mister Fantastic (father), Valeria Richards (sister), Human Torch (uncle), The Thing (god-father), Alicia Masters (godmother), Nathaniel Richards (Grandfather), Rachel Summers (alternate reality girlfriend/wife), Hyperstorm (alternate reality son), Dream Summers (alternate reality daughter). There ya go!!!

Indeed. See above for my thoughts on all of this.

7- Thor vs. The Sentry!!! Wow, now that’s a match of momentum proportions, and a debate for ages.

I can see it happening in Civil War. Keep your eyes on the latest here. I’ll keep everyone updated. I‘m not putting an opinion on who wins out there yet.

8- I suppose he (Hawkeye) could be the imposter Daredevil. Hell that might be Matt but I’m still questioning it. Any proof or evidence, and what led you to believe this?

No proof to point to it. I just have read that Hawkeye will be back in Civil War. No one said Clint would be Hawkeye or that Hawkeye would come back as Hawkeye at first.

Who can pull off the DD thing?

Matt
Hawkeye
Bullseye
Taskmaster

Just thinking. My mind is always open to possibilities

9- When did Thunderbolts become such a good book to read & how did they become such a powerful team, enough to fight & defeat the New Avengers??

Actually the current series was what did it. It’s the combined work of Fabian Nicieza and Tom Grummett that make the Thunderbolts what they are. The book actually has been good since coming back. It was pretty damn good when it was the real Thunderbolts back in the original series as well. I think people really need to read it.

Last Week: Civil War-

-“Kudos to Cap for kickin so much S.H.I.E.L.D @$$. I side with Cap on this one myself…” me too.

-This is also the strangest I’ve seen Tony Stark without the use of liquor. Ex. Note that Titanium Man is one of Iron Man’s biggest foes too. I mean go and hire one of your foes to do that. That’s just mental illness.

-Oh and if Hulk comes back during the war I think Reed and Tony better pray he doesn’t kill them.—CLASSIC!!!!

Haha. Well it was my feelings on the full story. I’m in love with Civil War already. I’m hoping this outdoes DC’s Infinite Crisis.

P.S. About X-3, There will be an extra scene after the credits, reportedly. Keep a eye out for that!

Until next week…..don’t forget 5/26/06…….Keep up the good work. “God be with ye.” or Goodbye. LOL

Thanks for telling everyone about the scene. I’m looking forward to the movie to. Yes expect a review without many spoilers here in the Handbook. I hope it’s as good as the previews show.

Me too, or my girlfriend will kill me for dragging her to it.

Must read picks of the week

It’s that time again everyone. This weeks top 5 Marvel books of the week.

1. Captain America 18 – It was Wizard’s book of the year for 2005, and now, fan-favorite artist Steve Epting rejoins Top Ten writer Ed Brubaker for a groundbreaking 4 part tale! It’s the start of an action-packed thriller in London, as Captain America travels across the Atlantic in search of his old partner, a story that will see him fighting side-by-side with some very old friends. But Cap and the Winter Soldier aren’t the only ones taking the journey abroad, Crossbones and Sin are on a path of revenge that’s leading them in the exact same direction… And what of General Lukin and his “relationship” with the Red Skull? All this and more in the first chapter of “Twenty-First Century Blitz!”
I’m going to say this now. I think Cap is one of the best titles going in Marvel I put it in my top 3 easy. I think people should pick this book up now.

2. Wolverine Origins 2 – The new ongoing series continues! By mounting a full-scale assault on the White House, Logan has now clearly shown that both no one is beyond his reach. Knowing that Logan is coming for them—and knowing that he will stop at nothing in order to achieve his mysterious objective—the world governments now prepare to take the offensive. The U.S. government, having the most to lose, strikes first and strikes hard, fighting fire with fire. Who better to combat the Weapon X program’s most successful specimen than with its most bloodthirsty? One hint: Gimme a red.
Alright a slight drop from issue 1 in my opinion but this issue still was pretty good and we learn more about Wolverine here.

3. Moon Knight 2 – “Fear, More Than God”: Marc Spector lies awake every night, questions and fears haunting his thoughts. Because one night on windswept rooftop, he squared off against his greatest nemesis and something truly dreadful happened. Something Spector can’t put behind him, nor should. Something Khonshu won’t let him. The night is young and the moon is full. The worst is yet to come for Marc Spector. Part 2 (of 6).
I’m enjoying the new Moon Knight series already. This series might be the best new book of the year.

4. X-Men 186 – “BLOOD OF APOCALYPSE”
Are you ready for some action?! The ending to Blood of Apocalypse happens here, and does it ever happen! X-Men are lost, battles are won, heroes are reborn, and some villains are still evil! You will not want to miss this! Introducing two brand new Sentinels!!! Also features a bonus 5-page back-up story of the Horsemen! Part 5 (of 5)!
Apocalypse came back and this was really the only issue that explains most of the story. I would say this issue was the best of the Blood of Apocalypse series.

5. Annihilation Nova 2 – To protect the legacy of the Xandarian culture, Nova must escape from the burning ruins of the homeworld. But can he trust himself to use his new power wisely, or will he lose control again and pose a threat to the cosmos greater than the invasion itself? And on the subject of trust, how far can he trust his new ‘friend’… Drax?
Alright I like Surfe’s series the most but Nova’s series is not that bad and this one was pretty good. I like cosmic stories. Always have.
