Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat – Recap – Episode 1

Archive

Here I am again..it’s time for a NEW challenge! It’s Real World vs. Road Rules. Wait a second..that’s a lie. It’s the Real World/Road Rules Challenge featuring former cast members of ‘Real World’ and ‘Road Rules’! Wait..that’s another lie..kinda.

This challenge has a twist. It is called “Fresh Meat”! What does that mean? Well..there will be 12 former cast members of both of the above shows on one team. That includes 4 “newbies” from ‘Real World: Austin’. On the other team, there will be 12 newcomers. They have NEVER been on either show..EVER! MTV just picked them off the street and threw them onto this show. It’s an interesting idea, but it goes away from the ‘Challenge’ concept a little bit. Still..I think it’s good since we’ve seen many of these challenges before with the same people. This time we get some “fresh meat” and some new characters.

So let me just run by the teams and we will get started. We have the ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge’ “alumni” team and the newcomer “fresh meat” team! So here we go:

The Alumni

Coral (RW: Back To New York)
Danny (RW: Austin)

Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat – (Episode 1)

Welcome to Australia! This is home for the new challenge! And we get a look at the “fresh meat” coming into the game. TJ explains that these newcomers will be going up against some hungry sharks in the form of the ‘Challenge’ alumni. Theo wonders who these kids think they are? Coming into their world and thinking they can outperform the “alumni”. Crazy!

What do the newcomers have to say? Evan says he will probably regret doing whatever he will do, but he’s crazy and he is good at making bad decisions! Diem thinks she will do awesome in this challenge. Kenny says he is one of the best looking guys in the house…#1 or #2. Ryan expects the “alumni” to bully the “fresh meat” around at first. Tonya says the “fresh meat” have no idea what they are getting into.

TJ tells us that the “fresh meat” were put through some trials to start off with. They include “40-yard dash”, “wall climb”, “ball pitch”, and “logic”. Speed, agility, coordination, and puzzle-solving skills are a must here!

Now both “teams” are sat down and TJ explains the “real” twist to the game. It’s not the “Alumni” vs. “Fresh Meat” as expected. That’s a good thing according to Tina since the “alumni” are getting older and drinking more beer. The twist is that one “alumni” will chose one “fresh meat” person of the opposite sex to be their partner throughout the game! The stats are listed on a big board for the “fresh meat”. There will be a lottery to determine draft pick order. TJ will pull balls out of a hopper.

The first pick belongs to Danny and he picks Evelyn a.k.a. Ev to be his partner since she had the best times and stats. Ev says it’s not a surprise since she is the best girl here.

The second pick belongs to Coral and she picks Evan. Evan says that Coral told him that she would “eat dog to win the money”, and Evan thought that was fantastic. A match made in heaven according to him!

#3 is Darrell and he picks Aviv. Aviv likes that since Darrell has never lost a challenge and she is hardworking and determined.

Tonya picks Johnnie at #4. He predicts it will be him and Tonya vs. Coral and Evan in the final episode!

Theo goes with Chanda with the #5 pick. Tina gets with Kenny at #6. Wes goes with Casey at #7, but her “wall” time is so slow! 8 minutes! Casey said that jumping over the walls kicked her ass. She just smacked against it a few times as we get clips of that. Funny!

Johanna picks Jesse at #8. Derrick has Diem at #9. Katie is with Eric at #10. #11 goes to Melinda and Ryan. Finally..#12 is Shane and Linette. Ryan hopes that Melinda is as good as a competitor as she is to look at!

TJ tells us that the 12 teams will go through 15 challenges that will affect them physically, emotional, and mentally. To stay in the game, you have to avoid being sent to exile where two teams will compete head-to-head. The winners stay, while the losers go home. Only four teams will make it to the final challenge where they will compete for $250,000! The biggest prize in the history of this game! That is $125,000 each. Tina says that is a lot of money!

Cue the music..cue the entrances..cue the video game effects with each team being shown together as it gets loaded onto your TV or computer screen. The “alumni” are dressed in black, while the “fresh meat” are dressed in red. Oh..and it’s TJ Lavin as the host playing this “video game”…

Everyone gets a look at their house and they like it! Chanda says the house is very open with lots of candles, greenery, lizards, etc. They all find their beds and then head to the pool. Theo and Darrell jump in. Eric decides he’s Chris Farley and does a cannonball into the pool. Tina says there is some good-looking newcomers on the show this year.

Coral debates with the others that her guy, Evan, is the best guy in the game. He outran a black guy, so Coral says he HAS to be good. Theo hopes that the “fresh meat” kids have no clue that this game is twisted and there are many backstabbers.

And now we get our usual of alcohol and sexual behavior that follow. Melinda says she plans to have a lot of sex and that results in Wes kicking some “fresh meat” guys out of their room so that Melinda, Danny, Johanna, and Wes can get some “alone” time together in a room. Evan is not happy about being kicked out of his room. Jesse doesn’t want to be paired with a ‘Real World: Austin’ castmate, since they should be targeted first as a fellow newcomer to the ‘Challenge’ and the fact that they are already in an alliance together and no one likes the whole “couples” thing.

Wes explains that he is in love with Johanna. Melinda explains that she and Danny are still together and we get various clips of them.

But now it’s time for their first clue! Oh boy! “Be prepared to stand tall with your partner!” They have to leave at 7 a.m. Ev says that she will be the one calling the shots in this game, since this is “not the smartest group of people around.” Coral says that “she eats babies” and they will own this game! Evan agrees.

Wes tells Casey that she is “athletically worthless”. He tells her to stay away from Coral, Shane, Tina, and anyone that she saw in “middle school”. Casey thinks she may be in “way over her head”! Coral says that she will see Ev in a “Girls Gone Wild” video in a year. Wes says that he and Danny will always be friends even when Wes does send Danny home! Melinda tells the “fresh meat” to “trust no one but themselves.”

Everyone goes to the site of their first challenge and they go up to the top of a building that has a platform attached to the edge of it. The challenge is called “Stuck On Me”! They are on the Q1 building, which is 80 stories and over 1,100 feet tall! There is a 25-foot balance beam hanging over the edge of the building. They have to go to the end of the balance beam and back. Coral says they could die at any moment on top of his building. She’s scared! And it’s time for our first break! By the way, this is an one hour shows tonight..so buckle up!

Commercial time!

TJ explains more of the rules when we come back. The partners will be strapped together..back-to-back. They have to walk to the edge and pass the line and then do a complete rotation, which is 360 degrees. TJ tells them to make sure they do that. Once they do that, they walk back to the start. Darrell doesn’t like that. The fastest team wins the challenge and is safe from being sent to exile, and get to chose who gets to go into exhile. Tonya says that exile is the same thing as a gauntlet or inferno. Two teams get sent in and they compete to stay in the game!

TJ picks a name out of the hopper and it’s Coral. That means she and Evan get to choose the complete order for this challenge. Wes says that is an important part, since going last is an advantage to see the strategy of the other teams. Coral and Evan think about putting the ‘Real World: Austin’ people together at the start. They are not here to make friends.

Tonya and Johnnie are up first, though! Johnnie encourages Tonya to keep walking towards the line, but she says she can’t. She does get across the line and they begin to rotate. Johnnie says that Tonya’s actions worry him sometimes. But they make it across.

Melinda and Ryan are up next. They do it without any trouble at all. Danny is happy and relieved.

Johanna and Jesse are next. Jesse wonders if Johanna will compete as hard as some of the other girls in the game. They have no problems either.

Wes and Casey are up and Wes worries about doing this dangerous stunt with someone that he has just met and doesn’t trust at all. Casey says she is going to pee on herself, but they make it.

Derrick and Diem are up and Diem is terrified as the wind picks up. She says it’s the biggest rush of her life.

Danny and Ev are up and Danny is a little scared, but loved the feeling.

Tina and Kenny feel the same way. They have problems with the rotation and Tina calls Kenny an idiot.

Darrell and Aviv are up and Aviv says that Darrell is not a fan of heights, but they will pull through. Darrell said he looked down and started to panic. So as soon as they turned around, he runs back..dragging Aviv behind him.

Theo and Chanda are up and TJ notes that they have good speed at this. Theo says that is the time to beat when they are done.

Shane and Linette are next. No problems there.

Katie and Eric are next and Eric says that Katie’s grip tightens on him. They get out there quick, but when they make it to the line..Eric freezes since there is no more beam to look at. They do turn around and make it back, though.

Coral and Evan are the last team. The pressure is on says TJ since there have been some fast teams. They make it across and it seems fast.

TJ now ranks the teams on how they did. Here is the order:

#12 – Tonya and Johnnie – 3:41
#11 – Melinda and Ryan – 2:00
#10 – Johanna and Jesse – 1:14
#9 – Derrick and Diem – 1:02
#8 – Darrell and Aviv – 0:55
#7 – Tina and Kenny – 0:54
#6 – Wes and Casey – 0:40
#5 – Danny and Ev – 0:37
#4 – Katie and Eric – 0:29
#3 – Shane and Linette – 0:28
#2 – Theo and Chanda – 0:20

#1 and WINNERS – Coral and Evan – 0:14

Coral and Evan get to pick the first team to go into exile. Johanna worries that they will go after the “Austin” cast and she would be right as Coral and Evan discuss who to send. Time for a break!

Commercial time!

Coral confirms for us that Danny, Wes, Melinda, and Johanna have to go as soon as possible! They decide to send Wes and Casey into exile. TJ informs that there will be another challenge tomorrow. If Wes and Casey win that one, then they are out of exile and can pick a team to replace them. Regardless, everyone besides Coral and Evan get to decide who battles Wes and Casey in exile.

Eric says no one knows what to expect with exile, so that’s an added twist. Casey is trying not to cry at being picked for the first exile. Wes is mad and confused since he thought he did really well. He has to prove himself again. Wes then comes up with a plan and that plan is to get Shane and Linette voted into exile so that he has the best chance to stay in the game. He tells all his friends to pick Shane, but he needs two more votes to make it work. He goes after Tonya first, since she will probably go into exile if she doesn’t pick Shane. Tonya says yes. Danny thinks Wes is stupid, since he can’t trust Tonya!

Tonya says she doesn’t like to be lied to or manipulated. Tina says that is the name of the game. Tonya tells Linette..I think..that she is voting for Danny.

TJ tells Wes, Casey, Coral, and Evan to leave so that the others can decide and vote on who should be voted into exile. They have 20 minutes to do that. And we see everyone debating. Melinda thinks Wes and Casey vs. Shane and Linette would be a fair fight. Derrick hears that the “Austin” cast is coming after Shane and he goes and tells Shane.

TJ comes back in and they have to do an oral vote. Shane and Linette vote for Danny and Ev. Derrick and Diem vote the same. Darrell and Aviv do so as well. Darrell says they are going to break up the “Austin” cast by having Danny and Wes go against each other. Theo and Chanda vote for Tonya and Johnnie based on times earlier. Danny and Ev do the same, followed by Tina and Kenny. So it’s 8 votes for Danny and Ev and 6 votes for Johnnie and Tonya. Danny says the smart thing to do is for Johanna and Jesse to vote for Tonya and Johnnie so they they can save Danny. But they go with what Wes said and vote for Shane and Linette. Stupid! Danny says he is going into exile now! Ryan decides to vote for Derrick and Diem, since no one else will. Melinda is voting different, though. She goes with Shane and Linette. So Danny and Ev are going into exile! Shane said that Johnna could have gotten into Tonya and Johnnie into exile, if she thought for a second!

TJ says that one of the teams could win a pardon at the next challenge and they all could stay. Ev says that being partners with Danny is a disadvantage, since he is from “Austin”. Tina says they are targeting the “Austin” cast, because they are newcomers as well. They need to be initiated and that means only staying for a week!

Danny goes back to argue with Wes, Melinda, and Johanna about what happened. Danny said that Wes put them in this position with his stupid plan. If he goes home first, Wes is next since he pissed everyone else off. Danny is mad and it takes a lot for him to be mad at a real friend. But Wes did it. It didn’t have to be like this says Danny.

Commercial time!

It’s time for the next challenge and the next clue! Yay! “Now that you’ve entered the bush..prepare to get whacked!” Melinda hopes that either Wes or Danny win the challenge. If they don’t, then one of them is going home. Danny says he is not going home this soon. Wes jokes that he will be going home. So there you go.

They are in a swamp for the next challenge. It is called “Bushwhacked”! There are 20 tree stumps lined in a circle. There are 12 on the outer ring and 8 on the inner ring. The ones outside are two feet tall and there is one per team. Two people have to stand on each stump. They have to swing this big medicine ball around and try to knock the other teams off of their stumps. Jesse tells us that each team can only keep the ball for 3 seconds or you will get a DQ. TJ says that after 4 teams get eliminated, the 8 teams left move up to the inner circle. Tina says there are three heats to this challenge. The last team standing will win the challenge! They will also get a new cell phone with service for a year! Theo says the winners also get to create the order for the next challenge. TJ says that today is “exile day” and if Wes and Casey or Danny and Ev win, then they get to pick a team to replace themselves in exile. Wes thinks Casey can just hide behind him on the stump and they will do good at this.

The challenge begins and Jesse and Johanna are the first team eliminated since Jesse grabs the ball at the top instead of the bottom. Katie and Eric are gone next! Derrick grabs the ball and hangs onto it a little too long. He and Diem are out! Theo and Chanda are next. Johnnie says that everyone wants to get Wes and Casey and Danny and Ev out to keep them in exile.

Time for the next heat. 8 teams left. Melinda and Ryan are gone, followed by Danny and Ev. Danny is not happy! He throws his helmet. Shane and Linette are next. Tina yells at Wes on the stump about being in an alliance and Wes says..of course they are. He then calls Tina a “loud mouth” and for her to throw the ball and knock them off herself. She says no, which causes Kenny to hang onto the ball for longer, so they are gone! Now THAT was funny!

Time for the third round with 4 teams left! Evan says that Wes and Casey have to go down or it will get ugly around here. Casey feels that everyone is hitting them with the ball. And that results in Wes and Casey getting eliminated. Johanna has a sick feeling since Wes or Danny will be going home. Darrell and Aviv are the next team eliminated. Johnnie starts yelling at Tonya for some reason. Not good. Theo says that it’s Tonya’s “fake *beep*” that make it so Johnnie has no room on the stump. They continue to argue. Tina says that Johnnie is mad and he finally sees why everyone hates her. That makes it easy for Coral and Evan to win again by knocking off Johnnie and Tonya! Coral is so happy with that! TJ tells Wes and Casey and Danny and Ev to pack their bags. Everyone has to say their goodbyes now, since the other teams don’t get to watch the exile competition! Shocking to everyone!

This leads to tears from Melinda and Johanna since one of their boyfriends is leaving. Melinda handles it better than Johanna. Wes doesn’t know if he should compete hard or not. Danny tells Melinda to stay strong, if he goes home. He doesn’t want to leave Melinda alone here, though!

Commercial time!

Time to see what exile is all about! It’s basically a race with two different stages and checkpoints. Each of the stages has a “reward puzzle”. If they go for that, they can get a reward. But it’s an option. They don’t have to do it to win. We find out that everyone’s bags were weighed when they first arrived in Australia. It turns out that they have to drag the same amount of weight that they brought. Casey doesn’t like that at all, since she brought 60 lbs. of luggage and Ev only brought 47 lbs.

A car pulls up and they all get blindfolded. They drive to the exile location. They jump out and the race begins. We see the bag weights for each team. Wes has 56 lbs. and Casey has 57 lbs. for a total of 113 lbs. Danny had 103 lbs., while Ev had 47 lbs. for a total of 150 lbs. Danny is a girl! Ev is nervous, since Danny packed a lot of Melinda’s stuff in his bags. Casey says that carrying all this weight is terrible!

The first puzzle they come to is checkers in a shape of the cross. They have to jump each checker and the checker that gets jumped is removed from the board. There has to be one checker left at the end. Wes decides that the reward is not big enough to take all the time to do it. Danny and Ev do the “reward puzzle” and they get a minute off of their time. Danny says that is no good since they took longer to do the puzzle to begin with.

Wes and Casey get to the second puzzle, which is moving three sticks to form three squares. Wes says move on, since he doesn’t think the reward will affect the outcome of the race that much. We see that the reward is getting into a waiting car and driving to the finish line! Boy..he was wrong! Ev tries to do it for Danny and herself. But she gets a DQ, since she moved one stick more than once which is against the rules. So it’s all even again! We don’t get to see who finishes first, though. Suspense!

Melinda is back at the house and she can’t wait to see who won. She loves Wes, but wants Danny to return. A car pulls up and out steps Wes and Casey! Evan consoles Melinda. Wes and Johanna hug Melinda and Johanna is sad for Melinda since Danny is gone.

Now we get to see the finish to the race. Too much weight for Danny and Ev to carry on the beach! Danny says it was a “walk of shame” to continue to carry the bags across the beach..knowing that they had lost. Ev says they got screwed and it sucks. Wes says it sucks that he has to return to the whiny people at the house. Ev says she was the first draft pick, but luck was not on her side. Danny says they lost due to politics and he underestimated the size of the bullseye on his chest.

Evan and the rest try to get information from Casey and Wes. They want to know what exile is like. Wes says that’s an advantage, since they know the truth and don’t have to tell anyone a thing. Casey proceeds to lie to everyone and tell them that they had to eats parts of a kangaroo! Time for them to manipulate everyone else!

Melinda continues to cry with Johanna. She says they are all going home anyways. Ryan comes in to support them. Melinda has not slept without Danny for a long time. Ryan loves Melinda as a partner and wants her to stay strong.

Evan comes up with the bright idea to let Wes staple something into his butt. That would be the name of “Danny” as a memorial to him and to make Wes feel better. Great! That hurts. Wes doesn’t feel guilty at all and it’s a fun consolation prize for him. Evan just wants to get the staples out as fast as he can! Tina says that the “Austin” cast is a target in this. It’s not a game..it’s politics says Tina!

And we are out until next week!

I'm not embarrassed to say that my favorite television show of all-time is The O.C. I live by the motto "you can't fight fate!" More importantly, I watch WAY too much television, but I do so for the benefit of everyone reading this now. So to my mom and my wife, I say thanks for reading! To everyone else that might stumble across this, remember TiVo should be your best friend!
