Canadian Idol – Recap – August 1

Archive

Ben opens the show telling us 2.5 million votes were cast and Cyndi Lauper will be with us performing tonight. Then to the recaps of last nights performances.

Ben then introduces Cyndi, Debra Byrd (The vocal coach on the show for those of you who don’t know her) and the top eight singing “Time After Time” together. This was really good. Debra sounded great backing up Cyndi and when the Idols tuned in each got their own line to do. Eva, Ashley, and Steffi stood out as they should on this song.

Breaktime!

Cyndi then sings a song “Shine” from her new CD “The Body Acoustic” and rocks the house…….barefoot. About midway through she came over and sang to Zack then proceeded to get up on the judges table and continued to dance and sing. On her exit off the table she almost busted it. She then went into the audience and yanked about 5 folks from their seats to get the rest of the audience on their feet. At the end of her song she got some long standing “O” time form the judges as well as the audience.

Ben ashed Cyndi how she picked who would sing on her album with her like Sarah Mclachlan. She said “Who wouldn’t want Sarah to sing with them because she sings like and angel.”

Next wee get a skit at the mansion with Elena (Did I ever tell you she’s looking hot?!) Watch out Lucy Lui. She portrays their leader to get around security at the mansion to get Oreo’s and milk. She sends the idols all out to do their part and when they get back Elena is sitting on the couch already eating Oreos and milk. They are all upset mind you but how upset could you really get at Elena. I think Elena has a career ahead of her as an actress or correspondent. I love her. Did I mention I like her better than the Dore?

On with the eliminations.

Rob…….safe and should be
Eva……..bottom 3 .Ugh! I predicted it but don’t like it
Tyler and Craig are grouped together and …
Tyler…..Safe and shouldn’t really be
Craig…..safe and who didn’t know that
Brandon……Bottom 3 and deserved it for three weeks….Can it be ?! Uncle BTO will be hearing about this.
Steffi, Ashley, and Chad are grouped together and ……My knees are shakin’
Chad is in the bottom 3 that means Steffi and Ash are safe thank you Canada!

Ben turns to Farley and asks if after last night is this what he expected.

Farley: “Not by a long shot but with the competition this close every week is going to be surprise from here on in. So there’s nothing analytical to offer to be honest”.

Ben then asks Zack what he thinks about the way Canada voted this week.

Zack: “Finally Canada is looking at who is a potential winner and week after week you must compete to your ultimate level. And if you’re going to rock when you don’t rock and roll when you don’t roll you’re going to pay the price.”

Ben asks Jake as the country gets to know these competitors week after week is it making the voter’s decisions easier or harder.

Jake: “First of all easier or harder is not the issue. The issue is Canada needs to look on that stage and say who am I going to be proud to call my Canadian Idol, that’s what we want to know.”

Ben asks Sass how critical is it as we go on to reach out beyond their original fan base. (Who wrote that stupid question?)

Sass: “It’s extremely critical Ben. I don’t think anyone wins this show without national support.”

(By the way, no judge translations needed this week.)

As Ben gets ready to tell who going back to the couch I noticed something very subtle but very familiar. Brandon reaches toward both Chad and Eva with his arms and as he touches Eva’s arm she reaches to hold Brandon’s hand but……..it’s not there and she gives this “oh well” kind of embarrassed expression. I mention this because last season although a totally different meaning, Melissa reached out for Emily’s hand and she refused to give it and it mildly embarrassed Mel. Hmmmmm….could it be…..?

Ben then let’s Eva know she is safe. (and should not have been there in the first place,. I said that not Ben, He was just thinking it. Yes I’m a mind reader as well as writer).

Breaktime!

Ben let’s Chad know he’s safe so Brandon is going home. Canada gets it right again. Ben let’s us know that next week it’s Classic Rock with guests Dennis DeYoung founding member of Styx and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp. Brandon sings us out and in very good timing thanks everyone right in stride with his song and finishes up.
